deej, Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:05 (seventeen years ago)

im listening to that trae album now and on this track im like ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFCY1RIZ-WA
damn hawk's voice was amazing

deej, Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:09 (seventeen years ago)

I don't understand why you would leave out obvious classics if they're classics

J0hn D., Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

u misread, i just meant that because the catalog is so full of classics, im automatically excluding albums that are obviously great just because there are only ten slots - not like i set a rule about classics when making the list or something

deej, Sunday, 27 July 2008 23:41 (seventeen years ago)

o I get it, my bad

J0hn D., Monday, 28 July 2008 00:44 (seventeen years ago)

DMG is from Minneapolis-St. Paul. Yukmouth was here for a while more recently as well. I'm gonna go put on that Seagram CD.

Are there any good history-of-Rap-A-Lot books or articles anyone can suggest?

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 14:15 (seventeen years ago)

my advice would be to read back issues of murderdog magazine ... theyve always covered most of the label's rappers and have done interviews w/ its owner, j prince

deej, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 15:11 (seventeen years ago)

the geto boys vote got nadered between two albums and the solo stuff.

i don't know anything about big mello but "bone hard zaggin'" is a pretty fucking great album title.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Saturday, 23 August 2008 02:30 (seventeen years ago)

Just recently heard that Convicts album. Great stuff, especially "1-900-Dial-a-Crook" - awesome plot twist in the final couple minutes.

clotpoll, Saturday, 23 August 2008 04:01 (seventeen years ago)

mr. 3-2 ft. ugk wanna ride

listening to wicked buddah baby. everything sounds as fuzzy and soft as this. beats rattling in a kleenex box instead of trunk. pimp and bun sound great on this obviously but i love 3-2 from this era before he was teh grimmest man in houston talkin about 6 stars and shit.

dylannn, Saturday, 23 August 2008 06:46 (seventeen years ago)

need to go get that 3-2 record --- love his shit on the ugk records -- he gets the first verse on ridin dirty! his stoned junkee verse is killer too.

I don't think I've been to a single tx rap show where the dj didn't play z-ro's "mo city don" freestyle (track 1 on Let the truth be told)

reacher, Saturday, 23 August 2008 19:56 (seventeen years ago)

someone should edit it over 'all around the world'

deej, Saturday, 23 August 2008 20:01 (seventeen years ago)

??

reacher, Saturday, 23 August 2008 20:08 (seventeen years ago)

'girls around the world' i mean

deej, Saturday, 23 August 2008 20:10 (seventeen years ago)

eight years pass...

RIP Mr. 3-2, shot and killed at 44.

That first verse on Ridin Dirty...

JoeStork, Saturday, 12 November 2016 05:22 (nine years ago)

never see "one day" tagged with feat. mr. 3-2 but he leads it off with, "mama put me out at only fourteen" and... "my mama's only son / but i live every day like its my motherfuckin last one / every nigga and they mama askin why / but i'm in the game, live by the game and in the game i'ma die / and if I die or should i say if I go / bury me in hiram clarke next to the come n go." i remember i wrote about a 3-2 underground in--looked it up--2005 and it was, like, even at that point, he was like... it came out of nowhere, that underground, and did nothing, even in 2005, which was primetime for reappraisal of rap-a-lot's more obscure artists and real deal houston legends but i mean, he was one of those guys that you wonder how they were swept into obscurity but you remember yeah even if you followed regional rap closely, he was always in obscurity and all the blue collar houston legends ended up hopefully having enough disposable income from their day jobs and club shows in oklahoma to maintain a comfortable standard of living but more often than not they had an unhappier end and if you look at, like, a little later, the rappers that show up on screw tapes, quite a few are dead as 3-2 and they-- just the time we're living in and the circumstances of his death which i'm mostly imagining but shotgun blast to the back of the head, i don't want to go into a larger point but it's depressing. secrets of the hidden temple is weird but typically rap-a-lot, paranoid idiosyncratic street raps. i noted on this thread that wicked buddah baby (and a-g-2-a-ke - mil ticket) was underrated and i probably said that partly because it was slightly obscure but listening to it now, i remember listening to it a lot and it was the last weird 3-2 before he transitioned to extreme gang identification and the beats shifted from fake west coast to cheap houston style and his flow followed but around that time he had enough to still hold his own with heavyweights like face/ugk/fat pat/keke/z-ro/8ball-mjg even if his powers were severely diminished by the mid-2000s.

dylannn, Monday, 14 November 2016 15:11 (nine years ago)

Bun B: ...you know 3-2 I would probably say in 1996, you would be hard pressed to find somebody that was in the pocket lyrically better than 3-2 at the time. He and Big Mike were really just at the top of their game. 3-2 was a guy that I would sit around and roll weed and freestyle with for hours. He definitely helped me sharpen my tools so to speak. People like 3-2 and Rick Royal helped me to be a better MC. I was very lucky to be around some of the best people doing it at that moment. It led to me feeling free enough to be like, "Fuck this, I'm just going to be a lyricist."
