If this is the king of all Steely Dan songs, I'll have to go with "My Old School" (though curiously I voted "King of the World" on the Countdown to Ecstacy poll).

Joe, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 15:36 (seventeen years ago)

any major dude

n/a, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 15:36 (seventeen years ago)

haha I was going to do a SD singles poll and a SD album tracks poll. I guess I can still do the deep cuts one.

some dude, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 15:40 (seventeen years ago)

all but 3 of these were on my Steely Dan faves megamix (Gaucho, Major Dude and Wu), so this is really tough for me. s-dude must contemplate.

some dude, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

deacon blues

Frogman Henry, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 15:56 (seventeen years ago)

for me this is kid charlemagne vs. major dude vs. peg

max, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

most of my favorite SD songs are missing here - "Rose Darling," "Your Gold Teeth" from Countdown, title track from Aja, "Barrytown," others. In this company "Deacon Blues" really stands out - the development of the story & the song & the performance of it is kinda genius-at-work stuff. So that's mine. "Peg"'s close and "Doctor Wu" is closer.

I didn't know anyone preferred the first "Your Gold Teeth"!

some dude, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 16:10 (seventeen years ago)

"Aja" should be up there for sure, but for me it's a toss-up between "My Old School" and "Kid Charlemagne."

unperson, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 16:13 (seventeen years ago)

"Deacon Blues" – it sounds exactly how the haters imagine SD to be, yet proves'em wrong.

Rikki

Peg by a hair over Dr Wu.

myndbloom, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 16:36 (seventeen years ago)

Peg won the Mother Of All Steely Dan polls a few months back...
You knew it was inevitable...The Steely Dan Song Poll

I went with The Boston Rag on that one. Here, it's Any Major Dude, narrowly beating Dr. Wu.

easily on my SD top 5. so dark and bleak and amazing.

J0hn D., Wednesday, 30 July 2008 17:28 (seventeen years ago)

but yeah: "they got a name for the winners in the world/I want a name when I lose" is about as terrifying a line as I know, and the backing singers pre-accentuating that "I" in the break between the lines is like sweet death beckoning from a window.

J0hn D., Wednesday, 30 July 2008 17:31 (seventeen years ago)

I always kinda wanted to name a band The Night of the Expanding Man.

but fuuuuck, "Peg" and "My Old School" are both so good! and "Reelin' in the Years" singlehandedly justifies the existence of wanky guitar solos in slickly produced music. okay I think I'm gonna end up going with "My Old School" just for joyful drunken singalongability.

bernard snowy, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 18:47 (seventeen years ago)

basically from the time I was young I imagined that one of the greatest pleasures of adulthood was being able to graduate from (or drop out of) college and then listen to that song really loud.

bernard snowy, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 18:48 (seventeen years ago)

haha I always thought Expanding Man would be a great band name, but I'd never use it just because man, if I ever put on any weight I'd never heard the end of the jokez.

some dude, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 18:49 (seventeen years ago)

there are at least six on here i could vote for any given day

I dropped out of William & Mary. But I still voted for "Deacon Blues".

Rikki > Deacon Blues = Dr Wu = Any Major Dude = Reelin'

that's not my post, Thursday, 31 July 2008 03:13 (seventeen years ago)

Reelin

I went down the poll and tried to think of each song's main groove or riff that always pops out first when I think of it and that's the one that stuck the hardest. I guess I'm a sucker for 6/8 today.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 31 July 2008 03:38 (seventeen years ago)

I'll never forget the moment I got sick and tired of "Peg." It was like flipping a switch.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 31 July 2008 03:39 (seventeen years ago)

MICHAEL MCDONALD LOCK THREAD

PappaWheelie V, Thursday, 31 July 2008 03:45 (seventeen years ago)

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 31 July 2008 07:17 (seventeen years ago)

Haha - I'm gonna side with Geir - SHAKE IT!
