The All-stars Steely Dan Meta-POLL

If this is the king of all Steely Dan songs, I'll have to go with "My Old School" (though curiously I voted "King of the World" on the Countdown to Ecstacy poll).

haha I was going to do a SD singles poll and a SD album tracks poll. I guess I can still do the deep cuts one.

all but 3 of these were on my Steely Dan faves megamix (Gaucho, Major Dude and Wu), so this is really tough for me. s-dude must contemplate.

for me this is kid charlemagne vs. major dude vs. peg

most of my favorite SD songs are missing here - "Rose Darling," "Your Gold Teeth" from Countdown, title track from Aja, "Barrytown," others. In this company "Deacon Blues" really stands out - the development of the story & the song & the performance of it is kinda genius-at-work stuff. So that's mine. "Peg"'s close and "Doctor Wu" is closer.

"Aja" should be up there for sure, but for me it's a toss-up between "My Old School" and "Kid Charlemagne."

"Deacon Blues" – it sounds exactly how the haters imagine SD to be, yet proves'em wrong.

easily on my SD top 5. so dark and bleak and amazing.

but yeah: "they got a name for the winners in the world/I want a name when I lose" is about as terrifying a line as I know, and the backing singers pre-accentuating that "I" in the break between the lines is like sweet death beckoning from a window.

I always kinda wanted to name a band The Night of the Expanding Man.

but fuuuuck, "Peg" and "My Old School" are both so good! and "Reelin' in the Years" singlehandedly justifies the existence of wanky guitar solos in slickly produced music. okay I think I'm gonna end up going with "My Old School" just for joyful drunken singalongability.

I went down the poll and tried to think of each song's main groove or riff that always pops out first when I think of it and that's the one that stuck the hardest. I guess I'm a sucker for 6/8 today.

I'll never forget the moment I got sick and tired of "Peg." It was like flipping a switch.
