The only solution is BAN YOUTUBE or at least hang all advertisers from streetlamps.
― King Boy Pato, Thursday, 31 July 2008 11:34 (seventeen years ago)
Katy Perry is much much worse, through, so at least it's not all bad.

― Ludo, Thursday, 31 July 2008 19:54 (seventeen years ago)
Peter Jeffries' fault
― Fer Ark, Thursday, 31 July 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)
xpost - It's the Cadbury's ad! The one with the Gorilla! And the drums! Tho blaming Peter Jeffries seems like a good idea...

― King Boy Pato, Friday, 1 August 2008 08:23 (seventeen years ago)

― cb, Friday, 1 August 2008 09:27 (seventeen years ago)
I had a serious discussion about Phil Collins/Peter Gabriel tonight.
Again, BAN YOUTUBE
― Z S, Friday, 1 August 2008 09:28 (seventeen years ago)
Interesting fact about that ad is that Fallon (the ad company) had written it and had been trying to sell it to anyone for years. It wasn't, like, specific or anything.
― I know, right?, Friday, 1 August 2008 10:08 (seventeen years ago)
Was "Totally Wired" really a #1 single in NZ? That's so cool if true!
― Neil S, Friday, 1 August 2008 10:17 (seventeen years ago)
I don't think Totally Wired was #1 in NZ but it got high up there and Marc Reily ended up on the front cover of a major Auckland newspaper.
― King Boy Pato, Friday, 1 August 2008 10:42 (seventeen years ago)
Joy Division, of course, had TWO #1 singles in NZ.
― King Boy Pato, Friday, 1 August 2008 10:43 (seventeen years ago)
I looked it up on Wikipedia and I couldn't see "Totally Wired" in the 1980 list of NZ number ones but, yes, two JD number ones - "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "Atmosphere," both in '81!
I have never heard of the following NZ eighties number ones and presume they're all homegrown acts: Jon Stevens - Montego Bay (cover, presumably) Ritz - Locomotion (ditto) Dean Warentini - Bridge Swingers - Counting The Beat Renee Geyer - Say I Love You Howard Morrison - How Great Thou Art Prince Tui Teka - E Ipo Dave & the Dynamos - Life Begins At Forty Real Life - Send Me An Angel Patea Maori Club - Poi E Time Bandits - I Am Only Shooting Love (????!!!!????) Peking Man - Room That Echoes All Of Us - Sailing Away Dave Dobbyn ft Herbs - Slice Of Heaven Tex Pistol (!) - Game Of Love Big Pig - Breakaway Holidaymakers - Sweet Lovers Times Two - Cecilia Tex Pistol ft Rikki Morris - Nobody Else When The Cat's Away - Melting Pot Margaret Ulrich - Escaping
― Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 1 August 2008 10:54 (seventeen years ago)
Swingers - Counting The Beat
That was your Phil Judd after he left Split Enz and a couple of other lads.
Big Pig - Breakaway
That was Australians dressed up as blacksmiths. Yes.
Dave Dobbyn ft Herbs - Slice Of Heaven
YA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NAAAA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NAAAAA
― King Boy Pato, Friday, 1 August 2008 11:25 (seventeen years ago)
I'm all about how "Atmosphere" got replaced at #1 by Kool and The Gang.
― King Boy Pato, Friday, 1 August 2008 11:26 (seventeen years ago)
Apparently Margaret Ulrich was in both Peking Man and When The Cat's Away so that narrows the field down a bit.
― Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 1 August 2008 11:33 (seventeen years ago)
Oh yeah, I missed one out - who hell The Screaming Meemees?
― Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 1 August 2008 11:39 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, all local, except: big pig (aussie, as mentioned above, tho' maybe an ex-pat connection? not sure), real life (aussie, i think. also, great song!), time bandits (dutch (?!)) times two (dunno, but pretty sure not local) and ritz (no idea).
the good songs are: "counting the beat" (went to no.1 in australia too, i think; the swingers were pretty great generally), "send me an angel" and "poi e" (maori chanting and choral singing plus clunky electro! video featured breakdancing on a marae!)
― cb, Friday, 1 August 2008 11:44 (seventeen years ago)
which screaming meemees' song? if "sunday boys", that is a pretty good one. actually, i liked the peking man song at the time (me = 11 or 12 or something) too and probably would now, but have not heard it for 20-odd years.
― cb, Friday, 1 August 2008 11:50 (seventeen years ago)
It was "See Me Go."
― Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 1 August 2008 12:01 (seventeen years ago)
that one's ok. "sunday boys" is better. i don't know any of their other stuff.
― cb, Friday, 1 August 2008 12:11 (seventeen years ago)
"Interesting fact about that ad is that Fallon (the ad company) had written it and had been trying to sell it to anyone for years. It wasn't, like, specific or anything.

This is not true. Juan Cabral (the guy who came up with the concept) had something similar in his portfolio a while back and redid it for Cadburys. "Had been trying to sell it to anyone for years" is a pretty big stretch.
