"American Pie." So bad it's not even on here!

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Sunday, 3 August 2008 03:56 (sixteen years ago)

haaaaaaaaaa but only counting the ones on here actu only the ones I know gotta be don't cry for me andrew lloyd webber or whatever the hell

The Reverend, Sunday, 3 August 2008 05:42 (sixteen years ago)

frozen = best

The Reverend, Sunday, 3 August 2008 05:42 (sixteen years ago)

bedtime story would be so much better if she actually tried to sing it like madonna instead of like bjork

The Reverend, Sunday, 3 August 2008 05:43 (sixteen years ago)

Easily "Argentina." Best = "Music"

"American Pie" was released after this comp.

P.S. The Immaculate Collection is far from unimpeachable. A mess, really.

Kevin John Bozelka, Sunday, 3 August 2008 06:56 (sixteen years ago)

"Erotica". Out of her singles, only "Justify My Love" is worse.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 3 August 2008 06:57 (sixteen years ago)

ARgentina, easy. Most of the rest of these are among my favorite songs of hers (Take a Bow and Frozen in particular)

akm, Sunday, 3 August 2008 07:03 (sixteen years ago)

yeah yeah tru. I don't actually have ghv2 but I got the first one and yeah it is a mess

The Reverend, Sunday, 3 August 2008 07:07 (sixteen years ago)

I actually don't mind 'Human Nature'. For me Music is the worst - the clearest indication of where things were heading (hooklessly thumping dance grooves with comically trite lyrics expressing an ersatz wisdom).

naw dude no

The Reverend, Sunday, 3 August 2008 07:54 (sixteen years ago)

I have nothing against "Argentina", but since all the other songs on the comp are great, I gotta choose it.

Tuomas, Sunday, 3 August 2008 08:04 (sixteen years ago)

"Drowned World/Substitute for Love"

lousy filler track from possibly her worst album

abanana, Sunday, 3 August 2008 08:18 (sixteen years ago)

also isn't "Human Nature" censored on this?

abanana, Sunday, 3 August 2008 08:19 (sixteen years ago)

tempted to vote Beautiful Stranger of only just for the Myers clowning in the video.

blueski, Sunday, 3 August 2008 11:28 (sixteen years ago)

"Drowned World/Substitute for Love"

lousy filler track from possibly her worst album

can't recall the last time i've heard an opening track to an album called "filler"...

stephen, Sunday, 3 August 2008 18:54 (sixteen years ago)

'what it feels like for a girl' is really oddly boring in every respect, much worse than 'argentina' which is just overly deferential to a standard. everything else is good-to-genius, i count 9 there i'd unhesitatingly give 10/10 to

lex pretend, Sunday, 3 August 2008 19:15 (sixteen years ago)

"The Power of Goodbye" should be awful, yet isn't.

I voted for "Human Nature" -- it sounds apologetic instead of defiant, and no one asked her anyway.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 3 August 2008 19:17 (sixteen years ago)

Drowned World- tedious and bland.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 3 August 2008 19:22 (sixteen years ago)

Actually, "American Pie" came out between Ray of Light and Music.

this is a sin

Surmounter, Sunday, 3 August 2008 19:57 (sixteen years ago)

i'm not your bitch, don't hang your shit on me

anyway, often in life, defiance masks weakness with only a thin veil of vengeance.

Surmounter, Sunday, 3 August 2008 19:59 (sixteen years ago)

Actually, "American Pie" came out between Ray of Light and Music.

Oh shit you're right. Sorry about that.

Kevin John Bozelka, Sunday, 3 August 2008 21:04 (sixteen years ago)

"American Pie" is better than several of the tracks on this album.

Nothing truly awful on here, I'd probably go with Lex with "What It Feels Like For A Girl" - I assume it's the original version rather than the trance remix that seemed to be what got played round here much more often.

Best track is clearly "Deeper & Deeper" followed by "Take A Bow".

Tim F, Sunday, 3 August 2008 22:35 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, "What It Feels Like..." hasn't dated well. I loved it at the time. Maybe it's the chorus, which sounds underdeveloped.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 3 August 2008 22:46 (sixteen years ago)

Beautiful Stranger

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 August 2008 22:49 (sixteen years ago)

it must be said that i couldn't disagree more on this.

was candy perfume girl a single?

Surmounter, Sunday, 3 August 2008 22:50 (sixteen years ago)

Best track is clearly "Deeper & Deeper" followed by "Take A Bow".

yes, those two are elite madonna for sure. 'beautiful stranger', 'erotica' or 'music' probably next. where is 'bad girl'???

lex pretend, Sunday, 3 August 2008 22:52 (sixteen years ago)

omg. ry and i were just singing that.

Surmounter, Sunday, 3 August 2008 22:54 (sixteen years ago)

"Bad Girl" is the best single not included here.

Tim F, Sunday, 3 August 2008 23:14 (sixteen years ago)

This album will divide the Erotica haters; I agree with Tim that it's her best.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 3 August 2008 23:19 (sixteen years ago)

BTW am I the only one who felt "Don't Tell Me" was kinda overrated at the time? Looking at this list my eyes glide right over it.

Tim F, Sunday, 3 August 2008 23:21 (sixteen years ago)

i felt it was overrated at the time but i love it now. maybe the last time madge was unselfconsciously fun!

'die another day' i assume wasn't in the time frame - that's my favourite post-erotica single though

lex pretend, Sunday, 3 August 2008 23:25 (sixteen years ago)

Naw, I love it. At the time I overrated "Music."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 3 August 2008 23:25 (sixteen years ago)

i voted drowned world--i can't believe anyone doesn't like "human nature"!

deeper and deeper is my favorite, too.

horseshoe, Sunday, 3 August 2008 23:25 (sixteen years ago)

sorry, not drowned world; what it feels like for a girl.

horseshoe, Sunday, 3 August 2008 23:26 (sixteen years ago)

human nature is one of my favorite madonna songs

Surmounter, Sunday, 3 August 2008 23:27 (sixteen years ago)

and bedtime story kicks deeper and deeper's ass to montana and back

Surmounter, Sunday, 3 August 2008 23:27 (sixteen years ago)

i love 'human nature' (radio edit pointless though)

'deeper & deeper' is probably my favourite madonna track. EVER. the flamenco guitar bursting in!

lex pretend, Sunday, 3 August 2008 23:30 (sixteen years ago)

"Deeper & Deeper" is decent when compared to really awful singles from the same album such as "Erotica" and "Fever". The best single on the "Erotica" album was "Rain" though.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 3 August 2008 23:43 (sixteen years ago)

digitalspy website is doing a poll for best madonna single to celebrate her turning 50 soon and i hope Deeper And Deeper wins

blueski, Sunday, 3 August 2008 23:50 (sixteen years ago)

"Deeper & Deeper" -- to my mind -- might be the best thing she's ever done.

"Erotica" is crap, as is "Beautiful Stranger".

Alex in NYC, Monday, 4 August 2008 02:02 (sixteen years ago)

It kind of surprises me that there isn't a single song on that list that I like. Not even a little. I guess "Ray of Light" is the one that irritates me the most.

daavid, Monday, 4 August 2008 03:19 (sixteen years ago)

It seems like cheating how easily "Argentina" deserves the vote here, but there it is.

If not for that, I'd be torn between a few of the blander Ray of Light tracks.

First four tracks are the best, rounded out to five by "Don't Tell Me."

Eric H., Monday, 4 August 2008 03:59 (sixteen years ago)

Substitute for Love is perfectly fine as far as songs co-written by Rod McKuen (lol) go. I kid, but actually think it's a decent song. What It Feels Like For a Girl is a little underdeveloped, yes, but I like it fine too and at least it's not a dour torture device like Frozen or The Power of Goodbye. Never mind those, though, Don't Cry for Me Argentina is fundamentally unlistenable. Case closed.

as for the good stuff, Deeper and Deeper has a lot of surface sheen, but Erotica is arguably on par with it when you go below the surface. I like both Take a Bow and Don't Tell Me a lot, but those are basically covers. I'm not gonna evaluate Al's take on Human Nature, only comment that if you want to demand that much from her, you should probably be even more disappointed in the more musically attractive tunes on the album. Beautiful Stranger isn't anything special, but it isn't terrible either.

gabbneb, Monday, 4 August 2008 04:10 (sixteen years ago)

Best version of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" was the horrifically brilliantly camp house remix that turned Madonna's fist pounding against her chest into a 4X4 beat (thematically, not literally). It's like Evita is raised from the dead to rule over G.A.Y.

Tim F, Monday, 4 August 2008 04:34 (sixteen years ago)

"Frozen" is bad in theory but i think sounds nice enough to get away with it.

Very surprised that "The Power of Goodbye" and "What It Feels Like For A Girl" are on this album but not the David Morales on Valium of "Nothing Really Matters".

Tim F, Monday, 4 August 2008 04:36 (sixteen years ago)

i voted "don't tell me" -- i don't know why listening to it makes me feel so violent.

get bent, Monday, 4 August 2008 04:51 (sixteen years ago)

"Drowned World/Substitute for Love"

lousy filler track from possibly her worst album

Have to disagree there, Substitute for Love is wicked. The only Madonna song I find quite affecting. Some nice mixes of it too.

On the other hand, Music sounds quite dated now

Discordian, Monday, 4 August 2008 15:18 (sixteen years ago)

I hate "Beautiful Stranger, " especially the "doo doo dada dah dah dah dah dada dah" part.

'erotica' second???? it's amazing!

Rocktimists!

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 11 August 2008 00:05 (sixteen years ago)

soto have you heard 'music' lately? really really hasn't held up (EH?) for me. 'erotica' second is fucking absurd, that shit has held up (EH?) and more. 'beautiful stranger' really shouldn't be anywhere near that high either. kinda amazed/impressed 'take a bow' didn't get any votes, also a little surprised 'human nature' didn't get any votes, always seemed such weak hip-hop to me from maybe the weakest g-funk cop ever to the lyrics which were way protesting to much (and not in an interesting way, instead of madonna actually angry, which it pretends, or madonna actually hurt, which it might've been, we just get madonna doing 'i don't care i don't care' like cartman or something), way closer to 'been there, done that' than 'mama said knock you out'; i remember when this comp (which i'd looked forward to) came out being bummed that this and 'bedtime stories' (and fucking 'substitute for love'???) were on it instead of 'bad girl' or 'i'll remember' or 'rain'.

balls, Monday, 11 August 2008 02:29 (sixteen years ago)

I dig "Music"; it's loaded with hooks. I have no idea what I voted for here, though; probably "Argentina", but they're all good (and there was no obvious lol candidate).

Euler, Monday, 11 August 2008 02:50 (sixteen years ago)

oto have you heard 'music' lately? really really hasn't held up (EH?) for me. 'erotica' second is fucking absurd, that shit has held up (EH?) and more. 'beautiful stranger' really shouldn't be anywhere near that high either.

I played "Music" a couple of weeks ago and it held up fine. As for "Beautiful Stranger," you're right: the transition from bridge to chorus (from realization to giddiness) is up there with "Over and Over" (does that one have a bridge? I don't remember. But the chorus is still pure giddiness).

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 11 August 2008 02:53 (sixteen years ago)

lol i am basing my reevaluation from hearing it piped in recently at a tj maxx so i could very well be wrong.

balls, Monday, 11 August 2008 04:04 (sixteen years ago)

OTM. Swapping "Argentina" and the two anonymous Ray of Light tracks for those three would make this a strong rival for Immaculate Collection, if not better.
