I've been teaching myself about the byzantine world of punk/hardcore and was wondering what bands SM may have been imitating in this hardcore-esque song...thanks in advance

Sonic Youth is a cover of some hardcore band, right? Not sure about those other two answers!

Not "hardcore" but Swell Maps

But that would be the answer even with the "'s Flux=Rad" part removed from the question.

Thanks for the tip...Nip Drivers is amazing! Was LA punk better than East Coast punk? I'm starting to think so!

Punk LA vs. NY - NY hands down! If we're talking about everything leading up to '77, NY displays a much more diverse sound and understanding of 'punk' as an aesthetic moment. LA often sounds very out of touch to me - perhaps their getting too much sunlight and gentle ocean breezes.

The Pixies?

The first Peel session of Pavement, Kentucky Cocktail in particular, sounds alot like the Pixies to me

Are there any recordings floating around of the hardcore band malkmus was in pre-pavement? Or any pre-pavement malkmus? that would be really hilarious to me.

Was he in a hardcore band? I think I remember hearing he was in some band but didn't sing....also, will someone please explain what the deal with Lakespeed was? All I know is it's like some pre-Pavement Malkmus band that's very REM like or something, except really awful and sort of poppy, not at all hardcore
