i mean, none of them are remotely edgy, and the worst of them are bland and boring, but truth be told some of the early costes compilations, the first cafe del mar, and a fair number of the seamless bargrooves comps got quite a bit of play before i got burned out on hearing them in every restaurant and bar i went into...
i know this isn't something you're supposed to admit in public, but fuck it.
so most of these are up to double digits by now (ie budha bar vol. 39 or whatever) but are they still providers of quality background music for the wine-and-cheese set? any random goodness popping up unexpectedly on name-of-comp vol x? or are there newer and better compilations in a similar vein these days?
ps. disclosure: i've been asked to pick 7 "chill out" cd's for a hotel to provide with it's suites, i'm including some classics like air, eno and ulrich schnauss, but i need to include some obvious choices as well, and this sort of thing is obviously what they're thinking of...

Café Del Mar - Volumen Tres... Pat Metheny, Nightmares On Wax, Fazed Idjuts.. many of these compilations had equal gems and car-crashes on them.. make up your own ones!
