Mars Volta Album Poll!!!!!!!!!!!!

Often discussed rarely praised. I'm curious about this one. Probably going with Frances the Mute. Everything that was great about De-Loused only taken much farther and to another level.

FTM by a considerable margin, then Amputechture, then Deloused. The new one is so bad it's unreal.

i like the tremulant ep. never heard the albums.

abanana, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 21:08 (seventeen years ago)

every single pitchfork review is basically "these guys were good but they completely fell off at this particular album", lol bad luck dudes

really tho "the bedlam in goliath" is some unlistenable inexcusable bullshit

Just got offed, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 21:14 (seventeen years ago)

Yah, just wanted to do the studio albums here. Never actually checked out the EP's. Are they worth checking out?

gman, Thursday, 7 August 2008 06:38 (seventeen years ago)

The first one's good, sounds like Drive-In. I hate guys like this, "he puts out 50 albums a year!", but they're not v good, so so what

The new one is so bad it's unreal.

U mad, doggie.

stevie, Thursday, 7 August 2008 10:16 (seventeen years ago)

Bedlam is the only one I haven't really spent much time with.

gman, Friday, 8 August 2008 06:37 (seventeen years ago)

frances, clearly. but bedlam isn't far behind.

really tho "the bedlam in goliath" is some unlistenable inexcusable bullshit

nonsense. nonsense, I tell you! it's a fine album, and easily superior to the debut.

m the g, Friday, 8 August 2008 07:17 (seventeen years ago)

Hmm. Maybe my one straight-through listen wasn't enough, maybe I was in the wrong frame of mind. I'll give it another go.

Just got offed, Friday, 8 August 2008 10:03 (seventeen years ago)

OK this is already much, much better than I remember.

Just got offed, Friday, 8 August 2008 10:24 (seventeen years ago)

kinda done with these guys but there was some cool shit on De-Loused. couldn't sit through what i heard of the new one but the drumming is sick.

Jordan, Friday, 8 August 2008 14:05 (seventeen years ago)

Woah. People actually listen to this?

SeekAltRoute, Sunday, 10 August 2008 10:49 (seventeen years ago)

I often ask that very question about the corporate commercial shit-pop that unfathomably accrues 500-post ILM threads. Although in saying that I'm just as guilty of intolerance as the hardcore popists. Very well, live and let live. But these guys WERE (and arguably ARE) capable of making superb music. They're not ideal; their style is often rooted in Santana-esque Latin cheese, and they're not as varied as some might claim, but at their best they're electric.

Just got offed, Sunday, 10 August 2008 11:14 (seventeen years ago)

I never understood the hate for Bedlam. It's easily better than Amputechture, and miles better than many other rock albums released recently. It really only had one bad song, that being Tourniquet Man, which wasn't really a song (I don't think). Plus, can anyone really claim there is a more electric live band out today? Sheeeit.

brightscreamer, Sunday, 10 August 2008 15:22 (seventeen years ago)

i would be a much, much happier person if none of these four albums existed.

stephen, Sunday, 10 August 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

wishing music didn't exist makes no rational sense at all

Just got offed, Sunday, 10 August 2008 17:21 (seventeen years ago)

oh i know

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Monday, 11 August 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

None of the other albums really compare to De-Loused...

ablaeser, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 02:27 (seventeen years ago)

Deloused is the only good one, FTM has it's moments, otherwise...

The Brainwasher, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 02:29 (seventeen years ago)

They're not ideal; their style is often rooted in Santana-esque Latin cheese, and they're not as varied as some might claim, but at their best they're electric. OTM.
I really like FTM but true about De-Loused. Its really tiring to listen to their albums tho, I really need to be in a space where I can genuinely enjoy it or I just block it out as noise (which is what I do with most guitar wankery of a much, much lesser scale and why I can't listen to speed metal)

VeronaInTheClub, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 01:00 (seventeen years ago)

three years pass...

never really cared about these guys but the new album, I think I kind of like it a lot! i mean, gonna be tuning out the lyrics of course when yr album's called "Noctourniquet".
But dig the sounds, the drums,

Who in the world would imagine that is music anyone would want to listen to.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 11:17 (thirteen years ago)

my only frame of reference for this band is that they're constantly namedropped as an example of mental music by a dude i know who can be 100% relied on to be wearing a trilby and 'fun' trousers

bulge renaissance (+ +), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 14:20 (thirteen years ago)

this album's pretty all right, and this is definitely my favorite track from it
