That's probably the album I'd play for someone from 1994 to convince them that they are now in the future - except that it came out in 1994.

I love how he calls himself a 'recovering minimalist', the man never recovered. But the result is that as a sampling / collage artist he's staked out his own space at the polar opposite end of the playing field from John Oswald / Negativland / Steinski etc. -- instead of exploring ADD media overload and upping the ante with number of samples per second, he's the guy who takes a handful of pieces, or even just a single piece, or even just a few seconds of one piece, and spins it out for minutes to an hour, he finds the depth in moments that most people just walk by

the result is work that's so different that I'm not surprised he doesn't get as immediately associated with those other names, but he's just as critical a figure, and I own every album he's put out

Al-Noor is incredible

yes. I thought it was the most successful all-the-way-through-album release of his since Mom's. I was suprised that it didn't get a lot more attention / reviews than it did, I just don't understand things really

if i'm not mistaken the second track ("flint's") is a cut-up of "barbie girl"? it is so bangin.

yeah for a few years there in the late 90's almost every single one of his concerts were different remixes of "Barbie Girl". every one very different, he was completely obsessed.

"Flint's" the most traditional one in that it's still mulched but you can almost dance to it. I almost thought he'd given up on putting it out but it's just overt enough that I think he was being cautious, but these days it's really looking obvious that the days of lawsuits are over. there are longer & better live versions floating around.

that's rad, and there's no almost about it, that song is totally danceable

'Shing Kee' off Mom's is *incredible*. I want to listen to it all the time.

I wasn’t familiar with Stone until this year but I’m listening to Baroo right now and it’s pretty great. One of two new albums this year.

i saw him play an unexpectedly energetic show in his current maximalist madness style, the way he was putting things together and taking them apart on the fly made me think of melt banana's recent wireless MIDI controller approach. not to impute influence one way or the other

Yeah, seeing Carl do this current style live was way more enjoyable than I expected (just based on seeing a lot of laptop shows over the years, which no matter how good musically can often be a pretty staid live show). Was a lot of fun to see him do it, and of course sonically it was wild.

Btw I’ve been listening to Material Girl all day and noticed he samples Carl Stone’s “Banteay Srey” in “funeral parade of roses”

I have just heard about the guy and Mom's and this is fantastic music. Ghostly and bubbly, with a great power of evocation.

This is my first discovery in this space since Meredith Monk and Park Jiha.

I've listened to a fair bit of Stone over the years but have never really gelled with it somehow. Hungover in bed today and god has *Mom's* floored me. The last few moments of 'Shing Kee' are extraordinary.
