"For the sake of future days"...stoopid

sonnyboy, Friday, 8 August 2008 20:34 (seventeen years ago)

I'm gonna be the boring popkraut dude and vote Moonshake

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 8 August 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

for years I woulda said Bel Air, but lately it's Future Days.

dan selzer, Friday, 8 August 2008 21:44 (seventeen years ago)

"Future Days"

Alex in SF, Friday, 8 August 2008 22:03 (seventeen years ago)

Title track in a walk. Maybe the best thing they ever did.

Sparkle Motion, Friday, 8 August 2008 22:28 (seventeen years ago)

went for Moonshake as well. sometimes i'll just be sitting around sipping an iced tea on someone's deck, enjoying the cool breeze in the air, and I'll just start hearing it.

rockapads, Friday, 8 August 2008 22:37 (seventeen years ago)

Fresh prince of B1 yeahhhhh

sonderangerbot, Saturday, 9 August 2008 02:38 (seventeen years ago)

Okay, this is one of the only Can albums that just always struck me as mediocre. I hate this because most everyone else like me who loves Can thinks this is one of their best. I promise a re-evaluation of it due to this thread.

In other news...at the gym the other day I stumbled upon "Vitamin C" from Ege Bamyasi on my iPod and I nearly cried it was so good. It's been a long time since I played Can...way too long. Those SACD CD's have sat on my shelf for quite awhile now. It's shameful.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 9 August 2008 03:01 (seventeen years ago)

I play this CAN album if im hanging out with girls. But its really good. Not because it has the best songs but because it has the best playing. Listen to this and you really get how fucking tight these guys were and how exactly they knew to complete each other. MAGIC!

sonderangerbot, Saturday, 9 August 2008 03:19 (seventeen years ago)

this is my fave CAN album, doggs. doesn't have my favorite CAN songs on it, necessarily, but I think it's the best album. voted for bel air.

tylerw, Saturday, 9 August 2008 03:29 (seventeen years ago)

My favorite Can, and one of my favorite anythings ever.

Bel Air.

Z S, Saturday, 9 August 2008 04:01 (seventeen years ago)

future days but close over moonshake

69, Saturday, 9 August 2008 05:15 (seventeen years ago)

My favorite Can, and one of my favorite anythings ever.

OTM. Me too. As such, this is a near impossible decision for me, as such. I lurve that "passing sprinklers" percussive element on "Bel Air" and the title track, but "Moonshake" brings the krautfunk like no other, so I don't know.. I'm going to have to think about this.

Pillbox, Saturday, 9 August 2008 17:59 (seventeen years ago)

opps: As such, this is a near impossible decision for me, as such.

Pillbox, Saturday, 9 August 2008 18:00 (seventeen years ago)

"Future Days" one of the best things in the world ever. "Moonshake" brilliant. Can't be arsed with the rest of it.

OTM

Tom D., Monday, 11 August 2008 12:48 (seventeen years ago)

I can't really separate this out into four different pieces. It's just one long perfect groove, isn't it?

Scik Mouthy, Monday, 11 August 2008 13:31 (seventeen years ago)

It's been a long time for me since I've heard this (my copy was stolen), but probably "Future Days" with "Bel Air" not far behind...

Naive Teen Idol, Monday, 11 August 2008 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

And FWIW, I never got Jaki Liebezeit's dislike for this record (or Cope's, for that matter) — it's pretty clearly their last unabashed masterpiece.

Naive Teen Idol, Monday, 11 August 2008 16:31 (seventeen years ago)

I agree 100% with Jaki on this album

Tom D., Monday, 11 August 2008 16:42 (seventeen years ago)

I think Jaki and Julian's problem is with "Bel Air", not with the album as a whole. I'm also surprised that anyone thinks "Spray" is that good either.

Tom D., Monday, 11 August 2008 16:45 (seventeen years ago)

what's Jaki's problem with "Bel Air"?

sonderangerbot, Monday, 11 August 2008 17:13 (seventeen years ago)

will anyone vote for "spray" (not me)?

gotta go with the title track.

original bgm, Monday, 11 August 2008 19:13 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think I've ever heard a note of this album.

I know, right?, Monday, 11 August 2008 19:15 (seventeen years ago)

Not my favorite Can, but it's a wonderful album to end the Demo era on. There's an incredible amount of resolution on this album, for what it's worth. Still, I prefer all the previous Damo albums just because Can's early work is that good.

All that said, I voted "Bel Air" for the former reason. All the tracks are fine, but "Bel Air" is up there with "Yoo Doo Right", "Halleluwah" on the excellent opuses tip. Not getting why there's hate for it here (outside Can members themselves.)

Mackro Mackro, Monday, 11 August 2008 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

Playing "Spray" right now. It's gorgeous. Esp. the "undulating" bits of the bass & guitar.

"Moonshake" begins. This is gorgeous and incredible. Fun and sharp. All ingredients interlocking and creating something unique. I think this must be the one.

willem, Monday, 11 August 2008 19:37 (seventeen years ago)

the last minute of bel air is the most sublime thing can ever did

cutty, Monday, 11 August 2008 19:37 (seventeen years ago)

"moonshake" is unbearable. cheesy, corny, crappy, you name it. zero subtlety. i go for the title track but "tago mago" is their best album. by far.

alex in mainhattan, Monday, 11 August 2008 21:39 (seventeen years ago)

Future Days because the voice changes so much and sounds cool.

CaptainLorax, Monday, 11 August 2008 21:56 (seventeen years ago)

Future Days for me as well, mostly for sentimental reasons: it's what got me hooked on Can in the first place. But it still stands out today, even though I too find this LP to be one perfect groove.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 11 August 2008 22:03 (seventeen years ago)

what's Jaki's problem with "Bel Air"?

Apparently everybody in the band felt that the drums and the bass were recorded too loud - it was recorded live so the levels were being handled by their sound engineer - personally, I don't think it's possible for the drums and bass in Can to be too loud! Beyond that, Jaki disliked the track because he said it was "too symphonic", while Holger liked the track for the same reason! It is probably the "proggiest" track Can ever recorded - which is why some people like it and other people don't like it. Admittedly, these days, Jaki doesn't seem to like much Can outwith the Malcolm Mooney years.

Tom D., Tuesday, 12 August 2008 09:00 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

It is probably the "proggiest" track Can ever recorded

if you ignore the the mid to late 70s albums.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 23:13 (seventeen years ago)

"Bel Air Suite" gave Damo legs for walking! (away)

Mark G, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 00:10 (seventeen years ago)

title track

Never really liked Bel Air that much, kind of just wanders. And the album as a whole I've always thought was a little overrated. I like the albums on either side of it a lot more (and don't really understand how the last two songs on Soon Over Babaluma haven't yet eclipsed Bel Air in the "symphonic Can" reputational sweepstakes)

Dominique, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 00:32 (seventeen years ago)

O T M Dominique! Quantum Physics: sublime.

nerve_pylon, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 00:39 (seventeen years ago)

Jaki's opinions are a bit mad, then again he was always the least important member of the group.

sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 08:06 (seventeen years ago)

Are you just saying that to annoy people?

Tom D., Wednesday, 13 August 2008 08:43 (seventeen years ago)

Hahaha

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 08:55 (seventeen years ago)

Of course I am

(though in one sense he was the least important member of the group, since I like to think of CAN as a perfectally holistic experience, making every member the most or least important...)

sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 09:18 (seventeen years ago)

"Future Days" one of the best things in the world ever. "Moonshake" brilliant. Can't be arsed with the rest of it.

I agree. Which makes it rather slight as an album as a whole.

"moonshake" is unbearable. cheesy, corny, crappy, you name it. zero subtlety.

I guess people listen to Can for different things than I do. But the groove, the groove!

I play this CAN album if im hanging out with girls.

Looney

Tom D., Wednesday, 13 August 2008 09:24 (seventeen years ago)

Love, love, love the osccillating sort of tuned white noise (if that's possible) bit that goes through Future Days. One of my favourite noises on any record. And the mumbling voiceover bit that comes in near the beginning. And the violins(?) or whatever they are.

Jamie T Smith, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 09:26 (seventeen years ago)

That's a guitar, the "osccillating sort of tuned white noise bit"... isn't it? And I think those are violins, tho they aren't credited, Michael K being a fair old fiddler. Favourite bit probably when the track fades in again at twice the speed, genius. Kraftwerk's "Ananas Symphonie" always reminds me of this track, for some reason.

Tom D., Wednesday, 13 August 2008 09:30 (seventeen years ago)

Subtlety's all well and great and all, but what's so terrible about a lack of it...?

RabiesAngentleman, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 09:33 (seventeen years ago)

"moonshake" is unbearable. cheesy, corny, crappy, you name it. zero subtlety.

It's hardly Andrew WK now,is it?

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 09:37 (seventeen years ago)

Guitar with distortion plus tremelo? I used to think that, but after many failed attempts to recreate it, I wondered if it wasn't some sort of ring modulator thing like Hawkwind used for the whooshes.

Jamie T Smith, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 09:49 (seventeen years ago)

I'm pretty sure it's guitar, it is a phenomenal sound!

Tom D., Wednesday, 13 August 2008 09:52 (seventeen years ago)

So, I was just trying to find a version of Future Days to listen to online (as I'm at work), and all I could get was the Carl Craig remix, which I'd never heard before. It's actually pretty good in its own way.

Jamie T Smith, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 12:07 (seventeen years ago)

Have just found Moonshake ... wow. Percussion bit that starts at 1.11. Yes!

Nope.

Wow. That was a lot more lopsided than I was expecting.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 23:06 (seventeen years ago)

You know, I'm going to be absolutely and totally honest with ILM. When I burned this album to disc (circa oh I dunno...2002??) I didn't include "Bel Air". Why? Because the damn thing was so loooooong and all I had was a fucking dial up connection. And it was so hard to find people to get this stuff from in those pre-s15k days. I'm only hearing "Bel Air" right now on my iPod for the first time. And Bimble doesn't want to jump in and make hasty judgements before he's heard the whole thing. Patience. Peace.

Just sayin'.

But Ride's "Grasshopper" comes to mind. And I'm 10 minutes in and I really think it's nice. Can rule etc. They make the flowers bloom.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Sunday, 17 August 2008 01:33 (seventeen years ago)

And doesn't it sound like the end of Beatles "Day In The Life" at the end?

I love it.

"moonshake" is unbearable. cheesy, corny, crappy, you name it. zero subtlety.

The only part that is sort of corny in moonshake is the cartoon fx solo... made the younger version of myself raise an eyebrow but in the end it became the most endearing aspect of the song. The groove is magnificent too but that's a given. Makes me wish Damo and Can had experimented more with this sort of zany pop moments than with prog experimentation. Turtles Have Short Legs and Moonshake have gradually become my top songs in the Can catalogue.

Moka, Sunday, 27 March 2011 01:53 (fourteen years ago)

Experimented with prog experimentation is a pleonasm. Meant to say I wish they had spent more time with pop than with prog.

Moka, Sunday, 27 March 2011 01:55 (fourteen years ago)

i want more is sort of apex of this, no?

also always liked moonshake tho judging by some of czukay's wardrobe, Can + subtlety hardly a given!

Dominique, Sunday, 27 March 2011 06:30 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah I think people are definitely off-base if they think "Moonshake" is no good. I absolutely love that song as well as "Spoon", "I'm So Green", "Turtles", and "I Want More". I wonder how many more of those they had in them??

frogbs, Monday, 28 March 2011 17:36 (fourteen years ago)

"Future Days" has probably my favorite Damo Suzuki vocal performance.

Moodles, Monday, 28 March 2011 17:55 (fourteen years ago)

xp "I'm So Green" is the first song that my mind begins to play whenever I think about Can; used to be "Oh Yeah".

So yesterday I was at the endodontist getting my tooth rooted (appt 2/4) and if you know me, you are fully aware that i need to be sedated to endure this sort of procedure. so i was drugged to the gills, numbed up and unable to feel my face, but ready to go home. the doc came out to the lobby with me to send me home w my mr. i don't remember what prompted it, but i mentioned that i am a drummer and the doc asked me who my favorite drummer is and, in my stupor, i went with Jaki because I could remember his name and he's def up there on my list anyway.

then my doc was like "oh yeah, Can -- Future Days is my favorite" and my face was too numb to smile so i made a very weird facial expression and felt that i have absolutely found the coolest dental professional on earth.

Do y'all ever get asked what genre of music you want before the health pros proceed with their tasks? Had a few MRIs accompanied by "jazz" which works out to 20 minutes of quiet storm enclosed in a tube.

My dentist office folks sometimes ask, but usually don't, which works out to pop country/MOR, to which the dentist actually sings along, but the hygienists just hum.

Went to a bodywork place where the owner played ROCK OF THE MILLENNIUM in the lobby, White Stripes/Interpol/Magnoia Electric Co/etc. Which was fine. Current place does the appropriate new age/ambient.

Would love to track down the provider who wrote the amazon review about how Demdike Stare "shocks or transposes people into a new consciousness"

(...now listed by amazon as an audiobook!)

Theracane Gratifaction (bendy), Friday, 25 October 2024 15:27 (one year ago)

My dentist's office plays soft adult contemporary. The only music convo I can recall is a hygienist asking me if I like Christmas music.

jmm, Friday, 25 October 2024 15:35 (one year ago)

My regular dentist plays Spanish language pop from the 2000s usually. This guy fortunately had no music but tbh I would trust him to pick something I'd like!

Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Friday, 25 October 2024 15:44 (one year ago)

I've never been to a dentist that plays music. Maybe that's one of those "American things".

When I had a big procedure (a couple of decades ago) I was asked if I wanted to listen to music on headphones. They pulled out a fat binder containing an inoffensive collection of cds from which I chose Dark Side of the Moon.

a couple years ago when I got my vascectomy the surgeon said "I have Spotify if you want to listen to anything", I was like uh yeah man I'd love to have my favorite songs ruined forever

My dentist in England in the 1970s had a psychedelic light screen above the chair that pulsed to music. He also had pictures of himself all over walls skiing in various beautiful locations. Didn’t stop the fucker for putting a drill on a nerve that left me with a lifelong fear of dentists.

Yah, this is why I don't generally want to choose. If anything, being forced to close listen to Garth Brooks is a distracting exercise.

Earlier this year I went to the dentist at lunch for a routine cleaning and when the suction came off I was treated to "Lake Of Fire" (Nirvana/Meat Puppets unplugged version) being played on the in-room muzak.

Granted the dental office is on Haight Street but it maybe was a little too #genX on-brand for me... uncomfortably so!
