The new news on the Factory mailing list is that supposedly from Japan there are these New Order remastered editions of their old albums with bonus tracks which may or may have not been released before (inc. the fucking Salvation soundtrack tracks). I can't seem to get any confirmation of this. Can anyone confirm this or at least tell me where I can get this shit so I don't die of um...suspense. It's only my favourite band in the whole world, etc. Not really important or anything. Give me one break.

I know, they had a quote from fucking Peter Hook about it all but I'm too fucking bloody bladdered and amazed to fucking deal with it all. Please, let some Virgos sort it out or something. Speak some reality into my brain, please tell me it's not real that I can buy a remastered version of Movement with bonus tracks. Tell me it's not real because I know it can't be. I'm dreaming. Please pinch me.

IT'S ONLY MY FAVOURITE BAND IN THE WHOLE UNIVERSE NOTHING IMPORTANT
Hooky's comment: "Listening to the remastered New Order LPs, as I've been doing recently, getting ready for those coming out, I was amazed at how good they sound, how powerful. The remastering's really helped them, which has been great."

Here's what a wonderful human being on the Factory mailing list posted called Alan Waites:
"You must be having a Blue Monday, still with Thieves like us, Run Wild it will be Murder Procession tonight, nevermind before going to sleep ask your partner for the Perfect Kiss on Your Silent Face and Dreams Never End unless Lonesome Tonight and Everything gone Crystal (eh) you will be so Shellshocked you will be wanting a Ceremony at 60 Miles an Hour, with no Regret you will be able to Run2 Fine Time Round and Round Everyone Everywhere this is a Slow Jam Brutal In a Lonely Place All Day Long Sooner than you Think Every Second Counts. Leave Me Alone Sunrise Let's Go. Don't start me on Joy Division."

the tracklistings are on HMV japan. they're good, but they aren't EVERYTHING; basically b-sides and nothing that hasn't been released before except for Run2. So if those are final and confirmed, it's not the revelatory experience talked about above, but it's good.

I see. Thanks.

inc. the fucking Salvation soundtrack tracks
... which are mediocre. i have the album.
isn't the "run 2" on the best-of just "run"? you'll know "run 2" if you've heard it: it's got a pointless drum break in it and sounds weedier.
i spent YEARS OF MY LIFE hunting down that 12". and it was one of the bitterest disappointments ever.
― grimly fiendish, Monday, 11 August 2008 09:37 (seventeen years ago)
"Run2" is on the AU Best-of, as is the horrific single edit of "Perfect Kiss".
― cee-oh-tee-tee, Monday, 11 August 2008 14:01 (seventeen years ago)
i know run was mislabelled as run 2 on some album(s) or other but i couldn't tell you which. there was a time when i maybe could have done; a rather tragic time, which i'm glad has passed :)
― grimly fiendish, Monday, 11 August 2008 14:32 (seventeen years ago)
the version of Run2 on the best of is actually just the album version of Run. Run2 has never been officially released on cd.

RHINO REISSUES A DECADE OF NEW ORDER
Double-Disc Collector's Editions of Movement, Power, Corruption & Lies, Low-Life, Brotherhood and Technique Feature Original Factory Records Releases Remastered and Expanded with Non-Album Singles, B-Sides and Remixes
Each Available from Rhino November 11
LOS ANGELES -- After forming in 1980, New Order went on to develop a groundbreaking sound that mixed synthesizer-driven pop with electronic dance beats on a series of acclaimed and influential albums. The band -- Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert -- released a total of five albums during the '80s that helped blaze a trail for the alternative music movement that would peak a decade later. Rhino pays tribute to these musical pioneers with Collector's Editions of the band's first five albums: MOVEMENT, POWER, CORRUPTION & LIES, LOW-LIFE, BROTHERHOOD and TECHNIQUE. On November 11, all five will be available at all retail outlets, including www.rhino.com, for a list price of $24.98.
Each will be reissued as a double-disc that contains a remastered version of the original Factory Records recording on the first disc, along with a bonus disc that collects the band's numerous non-album singles, b-sides and remixes.
After the tragic death of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis, the band's surviving members, Sumner, Hook and Morris, founded New Order with Gilbert and released its darkly melodic debut, MOVEMENT (1981). The album's eight songs show the band moving away from the past and embracing a new sound on "Truth," "Denial" and the opening track, "Dreams Never End." Among the bonus disc highlights is "Ceremony," a song written by Joy Division but never recorded in the studio that New Order recorded as its first single. Also included are later singles ("Temptation" and "Everything's Gone Green") that foreshadow the band's more dance-oriented direction.
New Order found its voice on the group's sophomore effort, POWER, CORRUPTION & LIES (1983). Featuring the original eight songs on the British release, the first disc offers exceptional dance-pop with "Your Silent Face" and "Age Of Consent." The bonus disc includes "Blue Monday" and its b-side "The Beach," which were released exclusively as a single in the U.K., but included on the U.S. version of Power, Corruption & Lies. The single became the best-selling, independently released 12" single of all time in the U.K.
The group achieved a high-water mark with its third release LOW-LIFE (1985), an eight-song album that perfected New Order's cutting-edge electronic sound with the singles "The Perfect Kiss" and "Sub-Culture." The bonus disc contains songs the band contributed to the popular film Pretty In Pink, including "Shellshock" (from the soundtrack) as well as an instrumental version of the album track "Elegia" that was heard in the film, but not on the soundtrack.
The band returned a year later with BROTHERHOOD (1986), an album highlighted by the brilliant single "Bizarre Love Triangle" along with the fan favorite "Weirdo" and the ballad "All Day Long." The bonus disc offers the 12" single versions of "Touched By The Hand Of God" and "Bizarre Love Triangle" as well as two remixes of "True Faith"; its b-side "1963"; and a new version of "Blue Monday" released in 1988.
New Order closed the decade with TECHNIQUE (1989), a nine-song album influenced by the exploding popularity of the acid house scene in Great Britain. Debuting at #1 in the U.K., the album delivered the singles "Run," "Fine Time" and "Round & Round" as well as "Vanishing Point," a song later used as the theme for a popular British television show. The bonus disc features the 12" single "World In Motion," the official song of the English national football team in 1990's World Cup competition. Also featured is "Fine Line," an instrumental version of the album track "Fine Time," as well as b-sides "Best & Marsh" and "MTO."

and i have to say: having spent more than half my life listening avidly to new order on everything from crappy copied C90 to the barrowland's massive fuckoff stack, i don't think i can be arsed.

Posted by: OMNY | 21:33 | permalink | Bookmark with: Delicious | Digg | reddit | Facebook | StumbleUpon08 November 2008Impending loudness The Durutti Column played the Barbican Hall on Thursday 6 November; it was correctly described as an extremely rare London appearance.
At the (somewhat delayed) soundcheck Keir sat in for Bruce on drums which were placed firmly in the middle of the large Barbican Hall stage. Vini ran through the main riff of Jumping Jack Flash.
Shortly after the scheduled 19:30 on-stage time, The Durutti Column were introduced individually by name although only Vini appeared on stage at this time. Dressed in orange t-shirt, jeans and Converse, he thanked everyone for coming and, as ever, apologised for the impending loudness.
After a solo (and particularly well sung) Gun, Vini welcomed "Miss Poppy Morgan" on stage for two piano duets which he "hijacked" with his guitar.
Poppy then left, to be replaced by Bruce (black shirt, black waistcoat and matching black beret with poppy) and Keir. An extra-extended version of Otis was familiar but the quite gorgeous piano outro made this one of the best renditions in recent memory.
It should be pointed out at this stage that the splendidly warm acoustics of the Barbican and a front-of-house sound engineer who clearly knew what he was doing combined with a band who were clearly relishing (and enjoying!) the experience to produce quite delightful sounds. The top two tiers were not sold for this event so everyone was sat in the Stalls (which were about 90% sold).
The only hiccup came during Jacqueline when Vini jumped the gun and the whole initial drum solo was skipped. Perhaps this was to meet running time restrictions. However, the same thing happened at the Ruby Lounge, so maybe not.
The second half of the set comprised Woman, The Missing Boy, The Beggar [a squall of feedback came from Keir's bass which at Vini's suggestion he then plugged into the piano amp. Vini quipped that Keir was doing exactly what he was going to do in the next song] and we closed with Requiem for my Mother with Vini mentioning that they had to get off stage.

Human Noise 7" single Fred Deakin (Lemon Jelly) Impotent Fury Remixes
Manicured NoiseThe Human League
Very Limited, White Vinyl Numbered 7" (500 copies) with unique artwork by Fred Deakin (Airside/Lemon Jelly).
A - Manicured Noise - Moscow 1980 (Impotent Fury Remix) B - The Human League - The Dignity Of Labour Part 3 (Impotent Fury Remix)
In 2007 Fred Deakin, acclaimed electronic musician (Lemon Jelly), designer and DJ, selected Moscow 1980 from the Northern Stories 1978/80 album for his Triptyche mix set. A mutual affection between CTR and Fred for the Post-punk era was apparent. Very shortly afterwards came the lucky and unexpected unearthing of the long lost master tapes for the first Manicured Noise single, originally released in '80. Moscow was a double A side with Metronome.
Fred has reworked the track into a Nu-Balearic storm, infused with the spirit of the Thrashing Doves. The track recently gained much attention after BBCR1 play on a Rob-Da-Bank Nu-Balearic special.
On the B side is Fred's fluid interpretation of an early Human League cut, plucked from obscurity and crafted for the tail end of another turbulent decade.
The release comes in a special sleeve featuring original artwork by Fred.
Very Limited and Very Lovely.

Peel helped pay recording studio bills and even bought them equipment to launch several locations of recording studios around Rochdale where they continued to record themselves and other bands which has played a major part in Manchester's musical history.
They recorded a 21-minute suite of songs about Peterloo in 1973 and then, because of the campaign for a decent memorial to the victims of Peterloo, Tractor wrote new songs in the last few years to add to the suite of music which now runs as a whole album at around 41 minutes. The album will be released a few weeks before the 190th anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre which is on the 16 August 2009.
This Sunday on the NW regional segment of the Politics Show on BBC 1, Tractor play an extract from one of the songs and members of the band and their producer Chris Hewitt talk about the politics of Peterloo and the parallels with Thatcherism and today and their idea of a Peterloo concert in the open air in Manchester somewhere near St Peter's Fields.

it's too hard to believe. Besides Rykodisc, Rhino are known for quality reissues, no?
well they used to be but the people who used to run Rhino are long gone, it's just a wing of Universal now.

hahahaha I was certain that was a DJ Martian post

Seems to me a lot of those double discs could have been single. I think I might get Brotherhood first because I never got around to getting the CD first time around. My local Reckless has them for a pricey $23.99, $19.99 at DeepDiscount, and £10.99 at CD Wow!, the best deal for us Yanks cuz of no tax or shipping, and the exchange rate when I made a purchase earlier this week was 1.5636, so $17.18.

another positive review, this time from the AV Club: http://www.avclub.com/content/music/new_orderwhat's going on here? are the reviewers lazy? or are the new order fans nitpicking? I guess it just seems funny that neither the pitchfork or AV club reviewers seem to have any problem whatsoever with this series of reissues ...
― tylerw, Thursday, 13 November 2008 20:44 (seventeen years ago)
Well supposedly the master tapes of many of the B sides were lost and they had to copy them from vinyl.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/news/20081010_hook.shtml
On double discs, hook said:
“It was done separately and always thought of separately, so I liked the idea of keeping the LP’s pure - not adding tracks to it and using the bonus CD to put your singles and extra tracks on.”
And double the price of course!

It's not a resissue of Palatine,
i know this, that's why i said retread. it's a great selection for someone who was new to the label or only had bits and pieces, but with the exception of the dowie track (to the best of my knowledge)0 it's all pretty much been reissued before. they REALLY need to do a reissue of the leftover obscurities.. there's heaps of them!
― thereminimum chips (electricsound), Thursday, 13 November 2008 22:35 (seventeen years ago)
i got movement and PCL yesterday and listened to disc 1 of movement and both discs of PCL.
i heard exactly one crackle during the whole listen, and i think it was at the beginning of one of the final tracks of one of the PCL discs ... maybe the instrumental of "confusion"? or "ecstasy"? for all i know it was on the original tapes - it sounded more like the noise a rough tape edit makes rather than very obvious mastering noise or a defective disc.
anyway i don't know about the last three reissues, since there seem to be more problems reported on those than on the early ones, but as far as i can tell my $50 was well-spent.
― moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 13 November 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)
the only one i'm really interested in is movement so if that one is mostly ok i'll drop the cash
― thereminimum chips (electricsound), Thursday, 13 November 2008 23:05 (seventeen years ago)
I have advances of all of these, and a few listens (before learning of any alleged problems) turned up nothing. I haven't listened closely since hearing all the hubbub, but frankly if you have to listen super closely, on headphones, with the timecode of supposed errors on hand as a guide, then I'd say said errors are indeed the product of obsessive nitpicking. And of course, of all bands, New Order deserves nothing less!
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 13 November 2008 23:11 (seventeen years ago)
i mean, it sounded good enough to me. i have a really clean stereo (w/ electrostatic planar speakers) so i think i'd notice if there was any *really* nasty noise on it. on the other hand, i'm not super-picky about noise. i'll buy old blue note CDs when people sell them used for the RVG remasters. i guess a certain amount of noise is just part of what gives recordings atmosphere? i thought it sounded louder and brighter but more dynamic than modern rock. it didn't sound as "old" anymore but it didn't sound completely "new" either. it sounds about as good as any recent small label indie-dance album or italo disco reissue sounds (think the sound quality of studio's "west coast").
― moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 13 November 2008 23:27 (seventeen years ago)
that should read: "louder and brighter than the original CD pressings but still more dynamic than modern rock"
― moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 13 November 2008 23:28 (seventeen years ago)
Tractor were fortunate enough to have John Peel indulge them to write and record a suite of songs about Manchester's Peterloo Massacre.
Does anyone know anything about this band? I've never heard of them and am rather intrigued. What do they sound like?

Rhino did the dumb thing and waited to see if anyone would complain. (uh duh)
I hope Rhino wasn't just feeding a line, and that there are plans to correct all the reissues next year.

Yeah well, in the meantime, I recently paid quite a few bucks to have Movement on vinyl again at last. I'm pretty thrilled by this, can't wait for its arrival.
― Chunk o' Funk (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 02:52 (seventeen years ago)
i once dj'd a halloween party. brought a big bag full of records but ended up playing both sides of movement instead. it worked. i had no idea it was hard to find. which color sleeve did you get?
― brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 03:50 (seventeen years ago)
I don't know, actually. I didn't care. I was just looking for a good quality vinyl copy.I used to have the light blue version, and that dark blue "B" music design on the inner label might make me have an orgasm if I see it again. I probably won't get that lucky, though.
― Chunk o' Funk (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 04:53 (seventeen years ago)
you played the whole of Movement at a party?

it was a halloween party. it fits, try it one year. best if its cold and foggy.
― brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 15:20 (seventeen years ago)
I can see that, certainly. Sounds like my kinda party.
― grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 15:20 (seventeen years ago)
"I.C.B." is kinda underrated as a dance track... especially for Halloween
― HI, YOUR BAND! (Mackro Mackro), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 17:19 (seventeen years ago)
my God that sounds like a really excellent party
― Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 17:21 (seventeen years ago)
I did have "Movement" but didn't 'get it' really, after "Power Cor" was one of my favs.
Then again, never really went JD way. Got the boxset, liked a good bunch of tracks a lot, the rest I could leave.

heh
New Order have announced that they will reissue their latest reissues,
― tricky, Friday, 21 November 2008 14:41 (seventeen years ago)
really has any band been more reissued/repackaged than this one?
best of, rest of, retro, substance, collectors edition.
oh, the smiths. and depeche mode. dm must be the kings of this.
anyway, i am also glad that i held off.
― tricky, Friday, 21 November 2008 14:44 (seventeen years ago)
glad I held off too. Even knowing all the issues, part of me upon seeing the lush deluxe packages for these albums still tempted me a little to at least pick each one up from the bin and sigh
― HI, YOUR BAND! (Mackro Mackro), Friday, 21 November 2008 16:28 (seventeen years ago)
haha me too. and even tho i don't really need them, im sure i'll think i'll be making some kind of "good deal" by getting the reissues of the reissues....

are these bad reissues being pulled from stores? amoeba still has them front and center.
― omar little, Monday, 24 November 2008 18:39 (seventeen years ago)
yeah so did virgin megastore in denver last week ... with a suspiciously low price ... HMMMM.
― tylerw, Monday, 24 November 2008 18:40 (seventeen years ago)

these are out, anyone heard the difference?
― mikebee (BATTAGS), Friday, 11 September 2009 22:25 (sixteen years ago)
i was wondering this as well.
also how can you tell the diffence between the two? is there a sticker, different number or other? i just don't want to be burn as i have waited a very long time...
― Bee OK, Saturday, 12 September 2009 06:40 (sixteen years ago)
i need a edit button
― Bee OK, Saturday, 12 September 2009 06:51 (sixteen years ago)
the mis-pressings have the Deluxe Edition (or whatever it says) plastic slipcase and the extremely large white sticker on the front with the title and details, the newer ones have smaller stickers with the info and no slipcase.
― mikebee (BATTAGS), Monday, 14 September 2009 21:09 (sixteen years ago)
thank you Mikebee1
― Bee OK, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 01:05 (sixteen years ago)
so i went to Amoeba Hollywood yesterday and found two of these at a discounted rate. thanks to Mikebee i made sure these were the corrected version. i bought both Low-Life and listened to Power, Corruption & Lies on the way home. it sounded so crisp, clean and clear. i highly recommend picking up these re-issues as it felt like i was listening to the album for the first time. i had no issue with the second disc, so i know i have the corrected version.
― Bee OK, Saturday, 21 November 2009 05:20 (sixteen years ago)
the first discs in the sets of 2 were okay weren't they? wasn't it just the b sides cds that were the problem? or was it both? i must say technique 'deluxe edition' cd 1 sounded great last year.
― piscesx, Saturday, 21 November 2009 09:20 (sixteen years ago)
There a couple problems that I heard of. There's a dropout in "Sunrise" that doesn't seem to have been fixed, and a few complaints of overcompression. There's a big list over here:

as you probably know, the New Order poll is coming up.
i got the Brotherhood 2CD set today, have two to go. hope to have them all before the countdown.

I'm not a vinyl purist, but Brotherhood really does need to be experienced as Side A and Side B.
― brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 20 April 2013 06:29 (twelve years ago)
New Order played 2 blocks away from me last night. Where was I? A Youth Lagoon show. ;_;
