I recently discovered at long last that this album IS actually available on CD as of only last year. And in a double disc bonus track form! I decided to treat myself and buy it and if someone else knows where we had a thread about this album before, please lead me there.

"I'm trying to chop off all the esoteric bits, the unnecessary bits, all the time." - Mark E. Smith, 1990
This is a real fave of mine in the Fall catalogue. Very special.

this has been on cd for at least seven years, maybe since it came out? I did have it. It's not one of my favorites

I like it, but it's been available since 1991 (!) - three separate times on CD and has never been hard-to-find, having been out of print only for a few months at a go, with cheap copies always around.

hahah well I kept my cassette for far too long then, whoops! :P

although this record doesn't seem highly rated by a lot of Fall fans, it is one of my favorites. More actual songs and less jamming than the same-era Code Selfish. Lacking the bitterness of Extricate, the record is quite beautiful in spots - "Edinburgh Man", "Rose". Almost all the tracks are winners and none are really bad, there isn't even one of those typical fucking-around tracks that occur on a lot of Fall LPs.

I should say... lacking the PERSONAL bitterness of Extricate, "Idiot Joy Showland" and numerous others bask in trademark MES generalized scorn.

the first Fall album I ever listened to and i got it the same day as "slanted and enchanted"! so i was wondering for a long time before i heard early Fall what people were on about when they compared the two. i just thought The Fall were bouncy indie dance band with an abrasive singer on the basis of this. its one of my favorites by 'em though.

Yeah, this is a good one.

I dunno about the Fall 2CD sets: If you have the Fall Peel Sessions box, why would you need the 'contemporaneous' Peel Sessions?
― Mark G, Monday, 11 August 2008 10:58 (seventeen years ago)
Shift and Code Selfish are the real sleepers in the catalog.
― cee-oh-tee-tee, Monday, 11 August 2008 13:55 (seventeen years ago)
my favourite fall album, this. code selfish would be second.
weirdly, i've not heard extricate in YEARS.

Extricate is such a black hole, they just vanished from public thought for a good five, six years after that.

xpost to Mark G -
yeah, I've wondered about why they've been doing that (including Peel Sessions in the expanded 2CD reissues). I guess it's so you can be a completist about a certain period of The Fall without having to buy 6 CDs of sessions. Anyway, I wanted to comment that the bonus CD for Shiftwork in particular has a lot of great stuff on it - the "White Lightning" single B-sides, the remixes of "So What About It" (wich I have STILL never heard), and a bunch of alternate versions.

ugh I dislike both of these (and their nearly-identical cover art)! I think even Cerebral Caustic is better than these two.
― akm, Monday, 11 August 2008 16:26 (seventeen years ago)
xpost well, I got the CD when it first came out (same time as the LP version, yep)...

Okay, so who here is ready, eager, and willing to dance their ass off to a "So What About It" remix of their choice? I love it. Reminds me of what Psychic TV sounded like in those days, i.e. "Towards Thee Infinite Beat".

'the mixer' = fave dancey Fall tune. 'the infotainment scan', another GREAT Fall album (glam racket, going to spain, why are people grugeful, paranoia man and the lost in music cover)
