Hound Dog Taylor & the Houserockers

Robert Christgau called them "the Ramones of Chicago blues". Who else is a fan? I've been playing their s/t debut a lot lately, as well as Natural Boogie. Great stuff - sloppy soulful gut bucket blues. Apparently Hound Dog used the cheapest guitar on the market, and what he squeezed out of that thing makes me wanna drink whiskey and dance all night!

I had a Hound Dog Taylor album that I lost somewhere along the way (maybe stolen at a party a while back). I liked it. After a few listens I came to the conclusion that it sounded like an awful lot of other electric blues except with a much nastier guitar tone. But that guitar tone made a big difference.

six years pass...

Woefully short thread. His first record has been one of my favorite blues albums since high school, always wish I could have seen him. By most accounts he would have been 100 this year.

Listening to the s/t album on Spotify now. Wow, nasty. Also love that there's a compilation called Release the Hound.

although they're still probably better than most contemporary blues labels, which ain't sayin much

Reading up on him now and it sounds like we're damn lucky to have any records by him at all. First album made in 1971, died in 1975. All those years of playing beforehand and fuck all appreciation by the world at large.

Wonder if he was on Dr Feelgood's radar?
