Voted "I Want You". A great song that could have benefited from a less ranchy arrangement. Never liked this album at all though.

"Home Is Anywhere You Hang Your Head" is a really underrated one. I voted for it, figuring that "I Want You" will get all the love.

Also: this album sucks from "Battered Old Bird" onward.

I think this record's way better than the other one he made that year, or for that matter some of the other 80s Costello albums it sometimes gets overshadowed by, but it's still mainly all about the first 2 tracks for me. Not sure which one to vote for, though.

"I Hope You're Happy Now" is his best song, easy.

Jazzbo, Monday, 11 August 2008 14:48 (seventeen years ago)

I guess it's a matter of taste. This album was a one-off return to his "rock" past while Elvis Costello for the most part of the 80s (and 90s) was all about sophisticated pop. I prefer his pop side, and out of his rock albums, the first two have much better pop qualities than this one.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 11 August 2008 14:52 (seventeen years ago)

yeah as Attractions albums go, it's one of the weakest, but almost every Attractions album is better than any non-Attractions Costello album.

IMO "Spike" is superior to most of them. (Not to mention "Imperial Bedroom" - his best ever work - but I believe that one was with The Attractions, at least on paper)

Geir Hongro, Monday, 11 August 2008 15:11 (seventeen years ago)

Weird-ass mix, what with EC's vocals way out front, and it loses steam towards the end, but I play this thing way more than Trust, Punch the Clock, and his entire post-1989 output combined (Spike is a lifeless embarrassment). This was his last truly classic record, the very last time he sounded like he had an emotional investment in the material. And I'm voting for "Home Is Anywhere You Hang Your Head."

Intellectual investment is more important than emotional investment.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 11 August 2008 15:39 (seventeen years ago)

Emotional fascism was the working title for "Armed Forces"

"I Want You" is gonna slaughter this poll.

Not a big Costello fan, but my pick would be "Next Time Round" here.

Your thoughts on the Lennon one?

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 00:54 (seventeen years ago)

I'm having the same trouble here as on the King of America poll: The "good" songs that folks seem to generally seem to regard (e.g. "Indoor Fireworks") aren't my heart-felt faves, while the ones I actually enjoy listening to tend to feature at least a coupla ridiculous lyrics that I sort of wince/marvel at every time I listen. Regardless, "I Hope Your Happy Now" is the one here I most often find myself wanting to hear, and enjoying when I do. So there.

this is probably my favorite Costello album after Get Happy. In fact, I like it so much I don't know what I'd vote for. Crimes of Paris, maybe.

akm, Monday, 18 August 2008 23:25 (seventeen years ago)

Side 1 of this kills so hard I don't think I've ever actually listened to side 2.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 18 August 2008 23:43 (seventeen years ago)

but man those first two songs. gotta be one of those.

Your thoughts on the Lennon one?

My thoughts on both in fact :)

sixteen years pass...

Surprised at "Tokyo Storm Warning" getting just one vote. Or none for "Crimes of Paris". I love this album. Incendiary or smouldering, throughout. Wish it'd get a re-issue w/ demos and a live disc.
