"Quick Step & Sidekick" is IMO a superior album, but I believe more people are familar with this one, making it better fit for a poll.

Picked "Hold Me Now", but there are lots of strong tracks herein too. "Doctor Doctor", "No Peace For The Wicked", "The Gap", "Storm On The Sea", "Who Can Stop The Rain" - all brilliant!

Never understood why "You Take Me Up" became their biggest UK hit though. I see it as one of their weakest.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 11 August 2008 14:42 (seventeen years ago)

Load of twatting rubbish

Tom D., Monday, 11 August 2008 14:43 (seventeen years ago)

yes.

I even ha(ve)d the QS&SK Cassette with the remixes, and thought hey these guys are pretty good, maybe the next album will be better!

Then I got to hear the singles.

Mark G, Monday, 11 August 2008 14:45 (seventeen years ago)

An album so wretchedly bad even MVE have barred it from their premises (see also No Parlez, Be Here Now...)

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 11 August 2008 14:57 (seventeen years ago)

Such inspiring and imaginative song titles too

Tom D., Monday, 11 August 2008 15:00 (seventeen years ago)

Oh it's better than virtually everything that is in the singles lists these days.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 11 August 2008 15:01 (seventeen years ago)

The least likely 'deluxe edition' ever. Straight to skip?

xpost do that one about Jay-Z singing again!

Actually, our Alice came up with "There's nothing wrong with this oven" but I fear it's too interesting for the TT's.

Mark G, Monday, 11 August 2008 15:10 (seventeen years ago)

Oh no, I can just picture Tom Wet Sunday Morning Face Bailey whining that:

"There's nothing wrong with this o-VEN
that can't be fixed by some miracle lov-IN'..."

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 11 August 2008 15:13 (seventeen years ago)

There ought to be a thread on Dog Ends of Fake New Pop as Public Information Officers: "Don't Mess With Doctor Dream," "War, War Is Stoo-PEED," etc...

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 11 August 2008 15:14 (seventeen years ago)

"Highly Strung," Spandau Ballet's timely warning about the dangers of mental instability, inspired by watching too many episodes of Rentaghost.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 11 August 2008 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

"The Riddle," written by Nik Kershaw when his video recorder recorded Jackanory by mistake instead of Countdown.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 11 August 2008 15:19 (seventeen years ago)

Actually, I like "Highly Strung" for one reason only.

We used to live in Windsor, and used the local laundromat (or, my mother did). One time, the wife of the notorious slum landlord Rachman was in there, and got chatting to her about how bad times were now Mr R was in all the trouble he was in. And just at the point where my mum was feeling sympathetic, she got all her dry wasing out of the drier, wondered outside, put it all in the boot of the Rolls parked outside and jumped in the back while the chauffer drove away.

So there you go.

xpost I quite like The Riddle, just for his brass neck! no long story for that one though.

Mark G, Monday, 11 August 2008 15:20 (seventeen years ago)

Actually, there really should be a thread along those lines.

Lets hit it!

Mark G, Monday, 11 August 2008 15:21 (seventeen years ago)

Most of this album is pretty great; it was one of my favorites when I was 9.

HI DERE, Monday, 11 August 2008 15:22 (seventeen years ago)

That means they were as The Feeling.

Mark G, Monday, 11 August 2008 15:23 (seventeen years ago)

These mid 80s synthpop/new romantic records were brilliant too. Thompson Twins, Howard Jones, Paul Young, Nik Kershaw. All of them absolutely ACE! It is just that The Smiths had convinced the UK music press that the new pop wasn't "cool" anymore. But they were wrong.

Thompson Twins and Nik Kershaw >>>>>>>>>>>>> The Smiths.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 11 August 2008 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

And 1983 was an even better year for chartpop than 1981.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 11 August 2008 15:30 (seventeen years ago)

They vanished because they wouldn't start rapping. Singing was on its way out.

Tom D., Monday, 11 August 2008 15:39 (seventeen years ago)

In fact they did. Which is when they definitely vanished.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 11 August 2008 15:39 (seventeen years ago)

Nooh, they started singing. For real, "Walking in the rain". That's when they disappeared.

Jay Z could do that one.

Mark G, Monday, 11 August 2008 15:43 (seventeen years ago)

Well, obviously they vanished because "Close To The Bone" was not exactly a great record to the same extent. They were never quite themselves again after parting with Alex Sadkin, and before they realised the mistake, Sadkin was dead anyway.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 11 August 2008 15:45 (seventeen years ago)

Before?

What, he died producing their album, and they didn't notice?

(I'm sorry, I have had wayyyyyy too little sleep)

Mark G, Monday, 11 August 2008 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

What, he died producing their album, and they didn't notice?

Oh, it was working with Robbie Nevil and Simply Red that seemingly cost him his life....

Geir Hongro, Monday, 11 August 2008 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

this band was physically repulsive

velko, Monday, 11 August 2008 15:48 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

I agree with Geir regarding 1983 v 1981, but in my teens I was sure that 1983 was the finest year of chart pop music ever.

Gukbe, Thursday, 21 August 2008 08:32 (seventeen years ago)

Me Helpful: I see that "Here's to Future Days" is also being advertised (Record Collector) as a deluxe edition...

Mark G, Thursday, 21 August 2008 08:38 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.
