Catchy noise rock with hard as fuck drums.

So I don't listen to much noise rock save from No Age and HEALTH and I need some more.
What I love 'bout No Age are the singable tunes and the thumping drums.
Are there any other Noise bands with pop aesthetics but serious percussion?

Maxemillian, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 01:29 (seventeen years ago)

umm I think the last couple of Liars albums are exactly what you're talking baout.

wilter, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 01:30 (seventeen years ago)

Lightning Bolt 'Wonderful Rainbow'

wilter, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 01:32 (seventeen years ago)

I love how quickly people respond here, it's amazing.
Thanks guys.
I've heard Lightning Bolt somewhere before; doesn't the drummer wear some kinda gimp mask?

Maxemillian, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 01:44 (seventeen years ago)

wikipedia - 'Yeah he does'

Maxemillian, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 01:47 (seventeen years ago)

xp
Liars yes, not sure Lighning Bolt bring the pop though

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 01:48 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I do need the tunes.

Maxemillian, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 01:49 (seventeen years ago)

wonderful rainbow's got the tunes.

Fetchboy, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 01:51 (seventeen years ago)

yeah I was going to say

I hum lightning Bolt sometimes

admrl, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 01:52 (seventeen years ago)

Coupla favs notable for their drums:

Coachwhips - "I Made A Bomb"
Battleship - "No Basis for Optimism"
Pissed Jeans - "Boring Girls"
A Frames - pretty much everything has great drums and is catchy and noisy.

bendy, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 02:11 (seventeen years ago)

Wonderful Rainbow is definitely a catchy record.

the best answer though is Parts and Labor's Mapmaker.

Simon H., Tuesday, 12 August 2008 02:12 (seventeen years ago)

[ / pedantry ] Isn't noise supposed to be about obliteration of melody?

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 02:15 (seventeen years ago)

AIR CONDITIONING
BIG WHISKEY
GRAVITAR

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 02:22 (seventeen years ago)

oh "catchy" well then HOLY FUCK are like pretend-noise rock for girls, u might like it

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 02:23 (seventeen years ago)

Parts & Labor

If you can stand a pretty fluid definition of 'noise rock', I'd say check out Xinlisupreme.

S-, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 02:46 (seventeen years ago)

Steel Pole Bathtub, esp. "Lurch" & "Tulip". Parts & Labor 3rded. Also with the Lightning Bolt. Wouldn't say that noise is necessarily about the obliteration of melody. It's about NOISE, noisyness, the din. Can be in pop or it can exclude pop -- just depends.

contenderizer, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:19 (seventeen years ago)

i still don't get how No Age is "noise" they sound like an early 90s indie rock band.

i recommend: Skoal Kodiak

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:20 (seventeen years ago)

looking forward to P&L's next record

HEALTH maybe, I mean, they do sound a bit Boredomsy. What about Super Ae?

I was thinking the same. He should be checking out the Urinals, if that's not too obvious. They're not 'noise' either, but it's where No Age are coming from, ain't it?

gnarly sceptre, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:31 (seventeen years ago)

Chocolate Synthesizer is mental unhinged pop

I know, right?, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:31 (seventeen years ago)

Jesus Lizard, Hot Snakes (perhaps too obvious, but those 2 seem to fit the bill)

This thread is all over the place.

gnarly sceptre, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:34 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i guess everything that's not totally gay limp indie shit is noise now.

most of the bands listed on this thread are good though.

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:36 (seventeen years ago)

Me too. Whineyless tho. Haven't seen them with New Joe.

Anyhoo, lotta yr canonical 80s/90s noise rockke bands were both catchy and "hard as fuck" in the drms dept: Scratch Acid, Jesus Lizard, Cows, Halo of Flies. Less inclined to jazz out, no trace of indie pop, so I dunno how well they fit the OP sandbox.

contenderizer, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:36 (seventeen years ago)

That "mee too" was re: new P&L. Urinals is OTM.

contenderizer, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:36 (seventeen years ago)

xxxpost That's because it's like somebody saying "I want more danceable country music like ABBA"

I know, right?, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:37 (seventeen years ago)

but actually my local noise scene did sort of make me realize that noise is more of a social group than a genre. like if you are friends with noise ppl you are noise. whether you sound like foghat or bert jansch or the grifters or sunn 0)))

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:37 (seventeen years ago)

Um Sonic Youth?

contenderizer, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:38 (seventeen years ago)

The Contortions record "BUY"...? Those guitars can really get in my head, and I love the drumming.

http://www.myspace.com/knyfehyts
Trio of dudes from Oneida, Ex Models, Pterodactyl.
Totally sweet cover of Iron Maiden's "Running Free."
Hardly any melody, hard as fuck drumming, though.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:44 (seventeen years ago)

this hytes of summer off of their myspace intrigues me....

I know, right?, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:45 (seventeen years ago)

do we have a proper noise thread, one that's not about it being catchy?

I know, right?, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:45 (seventeen years ago)

Tyvek
FNU Ronnies
Other termbo shit.

Laddio Bolocko has hard as fuck drums. And it's noisey. But tunes?? Not really.

gnarly sceptre, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:46 (seventeen years ago)

There are probably some threads about that on ILM.
xpost

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

The being catchy part makes it more fun to talk about.

Seems to me that "termbo shit" is rarely above adequate in the drums dept. Crazy broad generalization, I no, but...

contenderizer, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:48 (seventeen years ago)

No but like, MARNIE STERN

lightning bolt have catchy riffs.

I know, right?, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:53 (seventeen years ago)

my first thought was Gravitar. Grey Daturas might fit the bill as well.

rockapads, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

hell if OP isn't already familiar with Boris, everything from Pink to the Japanese Smile release might fit the bill.

rockapads, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

And speaking of Laddio, there's that Psychic Paramount thing, which is also drms as fuck and catchy, but not so much with tunes. Good tho.

P.S. I stand in favor of these shits.

contenderizer, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 16:59 (seventeen years ago)

Somebody said something about Oneida, so it might as well be said that Oneida.

contenderizer, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 17:00 (seventeen years ago)

Dman, karp, hell yes! Also big business. Was playing that 1st BB demo EP the other day in the car very neighbor hating loud. Evil Medievil = fukken badass. Did they ever release a "proper" version of that? Didn't wind up on either LP sad.

Yeah, that's the best thing they've ever done, possibly including the stuff they've done with Melvins. I think they sell that shit on iTunes. I remembered seeing it and being like, huh?

Maxemillian, when you say "Noise rock with hard as fuck drums" I think of the first three Jesus Lizard albums and Shellac's At Action Park. If you haven't heard these albums then you need to grab a box of tissues for when your face starts gushing blood.

talrose, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 19:32 (seventeen years ago)

Man, Gravitar. I bought Now The Road of Knives toward the end of my jazz purist phase after hearing McCoy on WPRB (I probably liked the jazzy drumming). I remember my friends being like "Wait, YOU like THIS?" Still a great album.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

remember people, he said "catchy"

cutty, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 19:42 (seventeen years ago)

Those albums have catchy riffs!

talrose, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 19:43 (seventeen years ago)

first thing that came into my head was that last Sleater-Kinney record

Just got offed, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 20:47 (seventeen years ago)

Raccoooooooooooon can be pretty catchy. 4 or 5 songs on is night people and cave of spirits forever are catchy. Those certainly pretty much don't contain hard as fuck drums though.

wilter, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 20:58 (seventeen years ago)

i'm kind of over them too.

wilter, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 20:58 (seventeen years ago)

new Oneida probably fits this seemingly contradictory thread as closely cas can be done

I know, right?, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 21:30 (seventeen years ago)

skin graft had a lot of shit, US maple (who aren't maybe catchy enuff) but lake of dracula, flying luttenbachers - both sorta twisted post free jazz math metal...melt banana (crazed japanese chicks gone noise gonzo shrapnel), tons of awesome shit.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 21:32 (seventeen years ago)

MELT BANANA WHY DIDN"T YOU SAY SO BEFORE?

Yeah for sure; the number of responses is a little overwhelming. I've youtubed a few and reckon I'm finna grab the latest Liars album. Will endevour to work my way through the list in its near entirety over the next few months, but likley I'll give up someway before the end and will resort to checking just those with repeated recomendations.

Cheers Bays
