african stuff - king sunny ade and franco are the classic ones (not counting ali farka toure, who is more bluesy)

My favourite Brazilian guitarist is probably Baden Powell, I can heartily recommend these albums by him: Canto on Guitar (Afro-Brazilian stuff with lots of guitar improvisation and candomble themes), Os Afro-sambas (samba/bossa nova album with Vinicius de Moraes on vocals), Seresta Brasileira (solo guitar album of ballads), and Baden Powell canta Vinicius de Moraes e Paolo Cesar Pinheiro (he performs songs by de Moraes and Pinheiro).

King Sunny Ade and band play Nigerian juju (though it has some linkage to afrobeat), Franco played Congolese rumba, and Ali Farka Toure plays Malian something or other(it does sound bluesy). Afrobeat is identified more with Fela.

yeah, I was gonna say...

lots of good starting points for Fela but my favorites are Gentleman and Expensive Shit. and the one with ginger baker is pretty amazing.

Best Brazilian guitar might be Novos Bainos/Pepeu Gomes

it won't be an example of "Brazilian" guitar, but Lanny's playing on Gilberto Gil's Cerebro Eletronico (which i recently wrote liner notes for) is simply some of the finest, most nuanced playing of the psychedelic era.
