ILM is seven years old and there's not a Jerry Jeff Walker thread.

WHY don't people love Jerry Jeff as much as they should? From the early, folkier balladeer type stuff to the absolutely fantastic outlaw country/rockin' records, there's at least six killer albums in there. And they're always dirt cheap! Like, 4 or five bucks is typical! I've got, I think, the first six (up through Viva Terlingua) and actually passed up a copy of Walker's Collectibles today because I was already buying too much other stuff and I figure it's not the kinda record that's gonna fly outta the shop it was at.

BUT, as much as I love the first half-dozen LPs, there are people out there who are of the opinion that his best period was actually the mid-to-late seventies, where I've sort of stopped picking up the records. Coming from where I'm coming from, a fan of rootsy rock a la the Band, Burritos, Byrds, Mr. Neil Young and so on, I wonder if it's better to cherry pick the later-seventies material or just say the hell with it and buy 'em all. SO HELP ME, ILM! What are the best Jerry Jeff LP's post-Viva Terlingua?

And if any of you are only familiar with "Mr. Bojangles" then you've got some great listening ahead of you, if you can get past the redneck outlaw country vibe.

I'm also of the opinion that it's only a matter of time & fashion until Jerry Jeff's LPs are as sought after as Townes Van Zandt's, but that might just be my boyish optimism.

ian, Friday, 15 August 2008 21:52 (seventeen years ago)

He's playing the Democratic Convention!

ooohhh just put mountains of mexico on a mixtape, from yr description it must not be very representative?

tremendoid, Friday, 15 August 2008 21:56 (seventeen years ago)

I've never picked up a Jerry Jeff record, but I went to college in Texas, and Jerry Jeff got played at pretty much every party every weekend. They're great for that time at a party when things are starting to get kinda weird, people start hooking up, and the harder stuff starts coming out. I've been meaning to buy his records for years, though, so I'd be happy to see recommendations.

Euler, Friday, 15 August 2008 22:03 (seventeen years ago)

I can't say I've heard "Mountains of Mexico." A quick AMG search sez it's from his '79 LP "Too Old To Change."

Ian - I'm right there with ya redneck mother ...

My dad turned me on to Dylan, Young, Stones, etc. when I was a kid and I'd cringe when he'd pull out the JJW - boy was I dumb.

BlackIronPrison, Friday, 15 August 2008 23:07 (seventeen years ago)

"Hill Country Rain" is completely unbelievably good.

J0hn D., Friday, 15 August 2008 23:16 (seventeen years ago)

Oh God ... Growing up in Austin, you get this kinda thing shoved down your throat. Obnoxious frat types have been Jerry Jeff's main fan base down here in Texas for a looong time ... so I've hated him by association ever since.

Romeo Jones, Saturday, 16 August 2008 01:54 (seventeen years ago)

That's very, very unfortunate.

RabiesAngentleman, Saturday, 16 August 2008 01:56 (seventeen years ago)

Once on a whim a couple years ago my friends and I drove from Minnesota to see him at his birthday bash...worth every second I didn't sleep.

Driftin way of life & five years gone are my favorites

bell_labs, Saturday, 16 August 2008 02:19 (seventeen years ago)

My parents are fans, especially my dad. Should dig out an album here while I'm at home. Good stuff!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 16 August 2008 03:30 (seventeen years ago)

I just told them 'hey friends of mine are talking about how they love Jerry Jeff Walker' and they were all "All right!" and talking about the vinyl they have around.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 16 August 2008 03:31 (seventeen years ago)

ILM is actually closer to eight years old.

driftin way of life is amazing, best one I have. "shell game" is beautiful cowboy hippie love song shit

reacher, Sunday, 17 August 2008 01:58 (seventeen years ago)

Everyone's dad seems to understand the Jerry Jeff. The live at Luckenbach thing is the only one I'm familiar with. It's the shit.

BigLurks, Monday, 18 August 2008 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

Obnoxious frat types have been Jerry Jeff's main fan base down here in Texas for a looong time

seems to be the case around here, too. It's rather unfortunate. I saw him years ago in a casino in Tunica, MS and he was great.

will, Monday, 18 August 2008 19:42 (seventeen years ago)

Putting out live LPs of previously unreleased material is CLASSIC. See Mr. Neil Young's "Time Fades Away" for a great example. "Viva Terlingua" is nearly that good.

ian, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 00:14 (seventeen years ago)

the first Circus Maximus lp is one of my all-time favorite psych records ("Wind" is the fukcing JAM)(oh ok, that's a Bob Bruno song), but I've honestly never checked out his solo stuff. I've been meaning to at least get that first one if I can find it..

"Luckenbach, Texas" by Waylon is one of top five songs of all time, and I've always wondered about Jerry Jeff's "train songs". Which "train songs" should I check out?

Stormy Davis, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 02:46 (seventeen years ago)

six months pass...

If there's a dream that you are working on
Don't be surprised
If any old thing that you're counting on
Just suddenly dies
Got to plan in advance what you know you'll need
And carry it up on your back
Got to keep the things you need really close at hand
And tote them in your bag

just found his self Tilted album from 73 and it's very good. I transferred the record to my mac and uploaded it to share with a friend if anyone is interested?

Jacob Sanders, Friday, 24 July 2009 20:41 (sixteen years ago)

I'd love to check it out.

Trip Maker, Friday, 24 July 2009 20:46 (sixteen years ago)

Should I post the link on here or should I send anyone interested an email? I remember years ago there was trouble when ever music was shared on threads.

Jacob Sanders, Friday, 24 July 2009 20:47 (sixteen years ago)

I wasn't aware he wrote and did the first version of Mr. Bojangles.

Jacob Sanders, Friday, 24 July 2009 20:49 (sixteen years ago)

I tried to send you an ilx mail, not sure if you check the address associated with your ILx name.
You can email me the link: Tripmaker6 at the yahoo.com
Thanks!

Jerry Jeff in heavy rotation the last few weeks.
Astoundingly consistent.

ian, Friday, 27 November 2009 05:25 (sixteen years ago)

Wow thanks for this thread ian, I got hold of Viva Terlingua! and Cowjazz and this guy is brilliant. Hell of a range too between the uptempo stuff and some of his ballads, especially on the 80s album.

Twisted Hipster (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 28 November 2009 12:15 (sixteen years ago)

Noodle, I'd highly recommend Bein Free, Driftin Way of Life and Five Years Gone. Hell I'd recommend s/t and Walker's Collectibles too. But yeah, he's got great range. That's what makes his records so listenable I think! They don't get boring; he changes it up.

POV JJW:
"Happiness Is A Good Place To Visit But It's So Sad In Fayetteville"
"I'm Gonna Tell On You"
"Dead Men Got No Dreams"
"North Cumberland Blues"
"Hill Country Rain"

ian, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 15:48 (sixteen years ago)

emotional range, as well as stylistic range i mean.

ian, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 15:49 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I've noticed. Cheers for the recommendations, gonna track these down.

max, Wednesday, 3 March 2010 01:20 (fifteen years ago)

next i'd hi try for bein' free & drifting way of life.

Listening to 'Driftin' Way Of Life' tonight and his self titled next, his voice is like an old friend, like chicken noodle soup on a sick day.

Steve Earle once told me that JJW was banned from driving in Nashville, and that every time he ended up back in town he made Earle chauffeur him around all night.

Bears repeating. (Even if it's actually a Gary P. Nunn song and vocal)

The booklet that came with the Viva Terlingua vinyl is super-classic, as is the album.
