wayne's verse on poppin is one of his best guest verses

J0rdan S., Monday, 18 August 2008 01:06 (seventeen years ago)

actually hold on, i forgot about 'with you', and that i got minimal love for 'kiss kiss'. 'run it' gets a bad rap too.

yo > no air > with you > run it > poppin > forever > etc

'wall to wall' worst BY FAR.

r|t|c, Monday, 18 August 2008 01:09 (seventeen years ago)

for some reason, platitudes in chris brown songs always kill me i.e. HEARTS ALL OVER THE WORLD TOOONIGHT or IT'S LIKE IVE WAITED MY WHOLE LIFE, FOR THIS ONE NIGHT

J0rdan S., Monday, 18 August 2008 01:15 (seventeen years ago)

"all you gotta do is watch me/look what i can do with my feet!" in "forever" - i feel like i should find this totally smug but instead i think it might actually be the lyrical high point of that song

"no air" might be my fave vocal performance from him tho, esp. at the end when him and jordin have an EMOTION-OFF

impudent harlot, Monday, 18 August 2008 02:32 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think "Forever" is as successful as it should be. Lovely ice cream metropolis in the skies production but it seems to diminish the appeal of the song qua song rather than enhance it.

My order would be:

"No Air" > "Yo (Excuse Me Miss)" = "With You" > "Run It" = "Poppin" > "Forever" > "Say Goodbye" > "Kiss Kiss" > "Wall To Wall".

Can't remember the others, probably haven't heard them.

Tim F, Monday, 18 August 2008 03:29 (seventeen years ago)

run it bitches

musically, Monday, 18 August 2008 03:41 (seventeen years ago)

"take you down" is his best single obviously.

he totally sucks though.

The Brainwasher, Monday, 18 August 2008 04:12 (seventeen years ago)

and he's not even cute really

The Brainwasher, Monday, 18 August 2008 04:12 (seventeen years ago)

don't get the appeal.

The Brainwasher, Monday, 18 August 2008 04:13 (seventeen years ago)

are you serious with "forever" :|

The Brainwasher, Monday, 18 August 2008 04:14 (seventeen years ago)

"No Air," obv. followed by "Yo." "With You" and "Kiss Kiss" are ok. Much like it's sister single "Yeah," "Run It" is pretty bad and not fun at all. "Say Goodbye" is really important to me for personal reasons, but I don't know if it's actually a good song.

Tape Store, Monday, 18 August 2008 04:26 (seventeen years ago)

seriously, why is chris brown so popular yet Omarion - who is a better dancer and singer - got dropped from his label? Why is chris brown the new Usher? He's so average in every single way.

The Brainwasher, Monday, 18 August 2008 04:28 (seventeen years ago)

"it's" sister, oh no!

also maybe chris brown is more popular because his voice is more interesting?

Tape Store, Monday, 18 August 2008 04:31 (seventeen years ago)

like I thought he was going to fizzle out w/ exclusive since "wall to wall" flopped and then all of a sudden he's this huge pop star and i'm like "...huh?"

The Brainwasher, Monday, 18 August 2008 04:31 (seventeen years ago)

what is so "interesting" about his voice? I'd say Omarion's is more 'interesting', it's not like Omarion is some amazing technical singer or something...

The Brainwasher, Monday, 18 August 2008 04:32 (seventeen years ago)

sorry, interesting probably wasn't the right word, memorable? the difference, ironically, between CB and Omarion is that CB sounds like a boyband singer...more pop.

Tape Store, Monday, 18 August 2008 04:35 (seventeen years ago)

i mean, ice box sounds like an adult song; with you sounds like a teen song

Tape Store, Monday, 18 August 2008 04:37 (seventeen years ago)

well yeah, I guess he has more of a "pop" voice, so obviously he appeals to more people

The Brainwasher, Monday, 18 August 2008 04:39 (seventeen years ago)

No way could Omarion be a tween heartthrob. This is the secret. I can see how Omarion/Lloyd etc. have their lovestruck-thug schtick and it works for them, but I don't think there's another current male R&B singer who looks young and innocent enough to get away with "With You".

Until someone corrects me, i'm suspecting the last male R&B singer to look that young was - surprise! - early Usher.

Which is maybe why any Chris Brown track that messes with the innocence angle (e.g. "Kiss Kiss", though the school-setting for the video clip helped things) is treading into dangerous territory.

Tim F, Monday, 18 August 2008 06:24 (seventeen years ago)

"forever" is like his most innocent song

who cares if he doesn't "deserve" it? he was gifted the best songs? idk i like them

forever is his most joyous song which is maybe why i like it, but excepting a few he's got singles to match up w/ any of his contemporaries

J0rdan S., Monday, 18 August 2008 06:41 (seventeen years ago)

forever belongs in the last scene of some shitty teen dance movie.

J0rdan S., Monday, 18 August 2008 07:09 (seventeen years ago)

"i can show you why i make them straight As in school/i'm a HUSTLAAAHHH!"

this is really hard...'no air' is the best but voting for it feels like cheating, a bit. 'run it!' is a total jam but 'gimme that' is a better version of it if only for the line above. 'with you' didn't stick out at all when i first heard it but grew and grew on me, "hearts all over the world tonight" = awww. 'forever' is like some lost 90s boyband single (note 'as long as you love me' nod in the middle 8) which makes it very good but not as great as it could be, it feels like that ravey-europop-r&b template's being done in better ways nowadays anyway. 'kiss kiss' is definitely the most fun to dance to. am going for 'excuse me miss' though.

J0rdan S., Friday, 22 August 2008 01:38 (seventeen years ago)

also i listened to 'kiss kiss' a bunch more times since ppl's impassioned defence and i really can't hear what the fuss is about, whether its within a chris brown context or not. i mean, some sort of dance classic?... if it was on some ludicrously incredible club soundsystem or whatever then maybe the bass could be doing bouncy things i guess, but otherwise it's always sounded to me like a trudge if not quite a dirge, kinda melancholy almost

r|t|c, Friday, 22 August 2008 01:52 (seventeen years ago)

anatomy line remains worth the entry fee tbf, but still

r|t|c, Friday, 22 August 2008 01:54 (seventeen years ago)

i guess it finally was put over the top for me when i realized that tpain and chris brown actually have kind of a real chemistry together, as opposed to something like "low" or "shawty" or "bartender" or what have you. iirc this is the first brown single to really go overboard w/ the autotune a la pain and at that time it sounded pretty cool to me in a kid brother type of way, esp when chris does the last line in the chorus. plus, credit to chris for the way he comes in on the verses in a real confident kind of strutting way, and in general whoever wrote the choruses, which have some cool little tics ("like like a bandit-bandit/oomph!") like "got money" does. just seemed like it had more personality than lots of stuff on the radio

J0rdan S., Friday, 22 August 2008 02:02 (seventeen years ago)

and in general whoever wrote the choruses verses

J0rdan S., Friday, 22 August 2008 02:03 (seventeen years ago)

ya know, now that i think about, though i may just be following my own thoughts down an ultimately worthless road, it seems like brown's got good chemistry with all his collaborators (juelz aside), esp thinking about the way wayne seems really enthused to be on "gimme that", even going so far as to shout him out at the end of the lloyd song. also the "duet" w/ jordin sparks and what i outlined above w/ tpain. dunno what that says exactly but i think its something

J0rdan S., Friday, 22 August 2008 02:07 (seventeen years ago)

while i'm glad t-pain finally found a kindhearted someone that doesnt laugh at/use him and all, i still find the song they sing to be strangely wearying. and in quite a pure way, as well - i got no beef with brown, pain or autotune ordinarily.

true about his collaborations though. he's just a good kid? gets overexcited on 'shawty get loose' but you still can't hate really.

r|t|c, Friday, 22 August 2008 02:22 (seventeen years ago)

r|t|c has been o|t|m

The Reverend, Friday, 22 August 2008 02:35 (seventeen years ago)

I definitely don't love "Kiss Kiss," I just happen to not hate it like most Chris Brown songs (aside from "Yo" and "No Air"). Considering how hapless most singers and especially rappers have been with autotune lately he really is better than most at it. Plus I like that little wah wah synth.

some dude, Friday, 22 August 2008 04:44 (seventeen years ago)

also I had no idea what most of the words were in the chorus until deej posted them in this thread, although i don't think it has any effect on how i feel about the song.

say goodbye 2

^underrated

Bomb Sackantino (J0rdan S.), Monday, 8 December 2008 05:30 (seventeen years ago)

"Say Goodbye" is a ballad about an unhealthy relationship. The song is about Chris Brown feeling as if his relationship with his girlfriend is not going well and he needs to let her go. The problem is he can never find the right time to break it off with her. The song's lyrics show that he is trying to let his girlfriend down gently rather than leaving her abruptly.

Bomb Sackantino (J0rdan S.), Monday, 8 December 2008 05:33 (seventeen years ago)

Song information

Chris sings about meeting a girl and claims that her looks "set him on fire". He is basically giving praise to the young lady's physical attributes and therefore describing her as "poppin'". [1]

Bomb Sackantino (J0rdan S.), Monday, 8 December 2008 05:38 (seventeen years ago)

"Take You Down" is probably Chris Brown's most risque song to date, as it has extremely strong sexual undertones and lyrics. The song is basically about how he feels a strong sexual attraction to his girlfriend. The video is equally as risqué, as it features Brown gyrating and humping all over the stage. He is also featured taking his shirt off and revealing himself. He also suggests sexual intensity with the types of actions he applies within the routine, suggesting that he wants to pleasure his girlfriend.
