I love this band, but it's funny, I listen to very little that's like this: kind of a sui generis thing for me. I voted for "The King Is Half Undressed", which brings all their tricks, and had a great video that got a lot of play on MTV at the time. I'd probably go for "I Wanna Stay Home" as the sappy second choice, and then "Glutton of Sympathy".

", I listen to very little that's like this"

i listen to a lot like this power pop things, but not much is as good and musically rich as jellyfish

Zeno, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 01:36 (seventeen years ago)

Hard choice, but I went for "Now She Knows She's Wrong". Most of the first album is brilliant.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 01:56 (seventeen years ago)

I'm glad to see that Glutton of Sympathy got mentioned in the first post. For years I only knew the first album, but I picked up Spilt Milk recently and that song laid me flat.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 02:27 (seventeen years ago)

Could have gone for "Now She Knows She's Wrong," but I chose "Baby's Coming Back." I like the first album a lot more, before they mixed Queen into their Turtles.

Joseph McCombs, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 05:05 (seventeen years ago)

But the second album is considerably more Queen than the first one...?

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 10:28 (seventeen years ago)

That seems to be what he was saying.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 12:24 (seventeen years ago)

The second album is WAY more Queen. It's either "New Mistake" or possibly "She Still Loves Him" for me. I'm still deciding.

QuantumNoise, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 13:17 (seventeen years ago)

it's a wonder why people (Queen haters) have a problem with the Queen influence.(also on the Jellyfish - C/D thread)
i hate Queen too, and if they were a Queen-copy-cut band, i'd hate Jellyfish too, but they are not: they are influenced by so much MORE (great stuff) than just Queen, and thats what makes them good.
in short:
queen=dud
queen+todd rundgren=classic

Zeno, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 13:37 (seventeen years ago)

I love Queen, and I love Spilt Milk!

QuantumNoise, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 15:23 (seventeen years ago)

I hate Queen, and I love Spilt Milk!

Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 15:34 (seventeen years ago)

That's wild to hear. I've always thought of Spilt Milk as something of a tribute to A Night at the Opera.

QuantumNoise, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

It probably is! I just think I like what JF do with that sound, whereas I find Queen horribly tacky and in bad taste.

Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 15:53 (seventeen years ago)

I love Queen, and I love "Spilt Milk", but I still love "Bellybutton" more than "Spilt Milk".

The very much ignored self-titled by The Grays, formed by Jason Falkner and Jon Brion shortly after the breakup of Jellyfish, was also a bit better than "Spilt Milk".

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 21:37 (seventeen years ago)

And being influenced by Queen is not bad in itself. In fact, the great songs on "Bellybutton" (because the songs are what makes it so fantastic) would have sounded even better with more Queen-like harmonies and arrangements.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 21:38 (seventeen years ago)

Favorite: Sebrina, Paste & Plato, for "she's a lovetarian / especially in the form of puppies".

But Ignorance is Bliss would get the vote if you were listing additional tracks.

one month passes...

Glutton of Sympathy is SO fucking beautiful at times

remy bean, Friday, 17 October 2008 05:27 (seventeen years ago)

Virtually all of the debut album, and large portions of the second one too, is fucking beautiful. One of the most underrated acts ever!

Geir Hongro, Friday, 17 October 2008 11:27 (seventeen years ago)

three years pass...

hey jjj, you still dig these guys

i have to admit they havent crossed my mind much until this thread popped up, but w/o really giving it a lot of thought it seems kinda criminal that ben folds five ascended and these dudes dropped like a stone

Thu'um gang (jjjusten), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 21:49 (thirteen years ago)

I was just playing "The King Is Half-Undressed" on Spotify (btw: baller song still) and remembered long-ago days of jjj Jellyfish evangelism

man the only song I've ever heard is "That is Why."

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 21:58 (thirteen years ago)

Criminally low number of votes on this one... I was thinking about starting a Jason Falkner S/D but not sure the demand is there.

skip, Thursday, 29 March 2012 01:01 (thirteen years ago)

Would vote "I Go Astray" in that one.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 29 March 2012 01:11 (thirteen years ago)

I voted Glutton of Sympathy. I use to walk through downtown Seattle at 4:00am listening to it on repeat on the way to work, and it's stamped indelibly w/ that association.

aka vanilla bean (remy bean), Thursday, 29 March 2012 01:14 (thirteen years ago)

still dig this band, very 90s in an axis of the 90s that's underdiscussed compared to grunge, eg these guys, World Pary, first Lenny Kravitz album, etc
