Natural One vs. Casper the Friendly Ghost vs. Good Morning Captain. Spoiled = dark horse.

Natural One.

contenderizer, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

I actually am voting for "Nothing's Gonna Stop The Flow".... I wanna hear Glass Candy cover it.

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:51 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Sunday, 24 August 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

I really, really hated this movie.

abanana, Sunday, 24 August 2008 23:48 (seventeen years ago)

...such a bad movie!

kate78, Monday, 25 August 2008 01:26 (seventeen years ago)

Hated the movie, but loved "Daddy Never Understood." But yeah, movie's indefensible.

Alex in NYC, Monday, 25 August 2008 01:37 (seventeen years ago)

i liked the movie. but i like bully more. and gummo best of all as far as korine kidz stuff goes. plus, gummo has the best soundtrack too.

and, yeah, i liked that punk rock number. daddy never understood.

scott seward, Monday, 25 August 2008 02:14 (seventeen years ago)

the only corny thing about this movie is the aids shit, really

deeznuts, Monday, 25 August 2008 02:15 (seventeen years ago)

I "corny" really the adjective you're looking for?

Alex in NYC, Monday, 25 August 2008 02:22 (seventeen years ago)

yes

the movie uses aids as a crutch basically, its significance for a lot of people hinges on 'lol u got aids now', which is bullshit, i mean, aids sucks but no one i know has aids

deeznuts, Monday, 25 August 2008 02:25 (seventeen years ago)

At the time I loved the movie partly because I knew some of the kids in it but I was 16 then and haven't seen it since. Song wise I love all the folk implosion stuff but have a soft spot for "Casper The Friendly Ghost".

ENBB, Monday, 25 August 2008 02:34 (seventeen years ago)

R. Spiralli just chimed in that this sndtrk was the first time he'd ever heard Slint and that "Good Morning Captain" remains one of his favorite Slint songs.

ENBB, Monday, 25 August 2008 02:36 (seventeen years ago)

i should maybe point out that natural one and daddy never understood are the only lou barlow songs i know. or that i remember anyway. so, it makes my choice a little easier.

scott seward, Monday, 25 August 2008 02:45 (seventeen years ago)

(not counting deep wound songs)

scott seward, Monday, 25 August 2008 02:52 (seventeen years ago)

i like raise the bells most of the other stuff is bad vibes, bad news

tremendoid, Monday, 25 August 2008 03:08 (seventeen years ago)

was going to vote natural one, then I thought "wait that's not fair, it's the only one I know," but then I remembered I actually own the record and still don't remember any of the others

energy flash gordon, Monday, 25 August 2008 13:26 (seventeen years ago)

This is a pretty good album! Natural One was my favourite song of 1996 lol indie

DJ Mencap, Monday, 25 August 2008 13:50 (seventeen years ago)

Anyone who chooses something other than Natural One is an incorrigible CIF or an obscurantist.

roxymuzak, Monday, 25 August 2008 14:05 (seventeen years ago)

I honestly think "Natural One" is my least favorite song on the soundtrack, and I'm a populist, damn it. Love the movie, too.

Anyway, I guess the Slint song is my fave of all of these, but I'm voting "Daddy Never Understood" because of the context - it's used SO well in the trailer for the film.

Lou Barlow has a good "Random Rules" interview on Onion A/V Club this week, BTW.

Savannah Smiles, Monday, 25 August 2008 14:15 (seventeen years ago)

Never liked "Natural One"! I remember liking the video alright.

wanko ergo sum, Monday, 25 August 2008 14:17 (seventeen years ago)

raise the bells

sleep, Monday, 25 August 2008 14:17 (seventeen years ago)

Or they think that Good Morning Captain is a pretty kickass tune maybe

xpost x 3

DJ Mencap, Monday, 25 August 2008 14:22 (seventeen years ago)

this is a pretty crazy soundtrack. lou barlow and folk implosion pulling in daniel johnston, slint and philly undie obscurity lo-down.

i was pretty surprised when i first heard this becasue the folk implosion material ranges from gritty and dark down-tempo that is a pretty dramatic musical departure from sebadoh's previous material.

"nothing's gonna stop" is this nu-kraut silver-apples update that is pretty ahead of its time. not sure if this track is on anyone else's radar.

Steve Shasta, Monday, 25 August 2008 16:49 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Monday, 25 August 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

bladow

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 13:25 (seventeen years ago)

Missed this but would have voted "Raise the Bells". Whatever they are doing there is as good as any Boards of Canada interlude ever, IMO.

Mark Rich@rdson, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 01:39 (seventeen years ago)

it's called "backward masking".

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

8. Spoiled - Sebadoh 0

i probably would have voted "daddy never understood," but zero votes for "spoiled" surprises me.

billstevejim, Thursday, 28 August 2008 02:52 (seventeen years ago)

can i just say: lol @ this thread title

eleven years pass...

In 1990, Johnston played at a music festival in Austin, Texas. On the way back to West Virginia on a private two-seater plane piloted by his father Bill, Johnston had a manic psychotic episode; believing he was Casper the Friendly Ghost, Johnston removed the key from the plane's ignition and threw it outside. His father, a former US Air Force pilot, managed to successfully crash-land the plane, even though "there was nothing down there but trees". Although the plane was destroyed, Johnston and his father emerged with only minor injuries. As a result of this episode, Johnston was involuntarily committed to a mental hospital.[17]

In college, I was getting a haircut, and "Natural One" came on the radio. The haircutter and a coworker rolled their eyes and started making fun of the song -- "Who writes this stuff?"

I had to resist the urge to say: "Well, this is Lou Barlow and John Davis – both from right here in this area, actually – who have been recording for a few years as the Folk Implosion (it was previously called the John Davis Folk Implosion, a play on JSBX). This track was produced by Wally Gagel, and it's a hit from the Kids Soundtrack; which also contains another Folk Implosion song ("Nothing's Gonna Stop the Flow"), plus "Spoiled," an older track by Lou Barlow's main band, Sebadoh...."
