search and destroy...

slowdive-esque from what i have heard. but i haven't heard that much. i liked Into The Ether a lot, what say you?

gareth, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

more mbv than slowdive, i mean they used to wear mbv tee-shirts on stage to deflect criticism that they were simple ripoffs. and, yet they completely aped the opening to only shallow for 'liquid indigo' the opening of their 'greater than god ep'. the vocals have a sometime sense of urgency though and they are surely more pop than most of the other shwoegazers especially on the first few eps. search everything but the 'ephemeral' ep which drones a bit, especially love the loveblind and after years singles, but i can also live without the dreamscape singles. secret shine is the most overvalued sarah band when it comes to ebay auctions, even if they were mostly great.

i am listening to 'untouched' now and it definitely is more slowdive, i guess i never noticed this before but more from teh early ep era of slowdive, the more goth-sounding material.

keith, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't heard Untouched (and I will not pay eBay prices for it) but I've got all of the singles and they're quite hit and miss. Loveblind is probably their peak - almost justifies their "twee MBV" tag as well.

Destroy: the self-titled song, and the "Unbearable" single isn't much cop either

Well, all your descriptions have convinced me I need to investigate, oh yes.

I like the "Loveblind" B-side, "Honey Sweet". It sounds like a poppy Ride song.

Curt, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah yes, Honey Sweet. That and After Years are my two favourites.

electric sound of jim, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, "Honey sweet" was a single on its own before "Loveblind". And I like the Turntable Friend single, because it so wants to be noisy and scary and can't do it at all, it's totally feeble, it makes me laugh. "Untouched" is probably their best moment, the first EP is too twee but has it's moments, the other singles all are rather fine, but the album is just great. Didn't they wear t-shirts with "My Bloody Secret Shine" on them? 8-)

To be truly pedantic, Honey Sweet wasn't the b-side of the 7" but was on the CD single of Loveblind..

electric sound of jim, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes my bloody secret shine, i had forgotten about that! i think my favourite is 'greater than god', nice little ten inch. my loveblind single is one that doesn't have a sleeve, could i sell it for thousands on ebay?

keith, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe - a copy of 'Untouched' without a sleeve went for US$20-odd the other day..

Is it true that the very wonderful Clairecords will be releasing a Secret Shine retrospective soon? Shinkansen certainly never will.

I'm going to this! Can anyone recommend an album- the above all seem to be for singles/ eps?

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Thursday, 20 July 2006 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

there's a best of, mentioned on the link above and in the post above the link above.

there was only one album, 'Untouched', Sarah 6 hundred and, er, something. (oh, 615). in total i think there were 13 tracks on sarah singles and eps, that one lp and a smattering of tracks on flexies and japanese compilations. and a spin off band. and the recent single(s?).

koogy wonderland (koogs), Thursday, 20 July 2006 11:45 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks! They sound like they should be pretty good fun, although the Water Rats in this heat might be a bit much...

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Thursday, 20 July 2006 11:48 (nineteen years ago)

i like this band a lot more now than i did in '02. i think twee noise is appealing again

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Thursday, 20 July 2006 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

the newest ep is terrific, much better than any of the neu-shoegazer dread stuff like the fleeting joys and the rest of the nonsense paraded on tonevendor's front page.

keyth (keyth), Friday, 21 July 2006 00:52 (nineteen years ago)

enjoyed the noise they made. Love Blind seems to be the only thing of theirs that they played with a hummable tune (but what a tune) and the rest of it strums along pleasantly enough. (puts on new ep. woo!)

the middle band, Air Formation according to the fliers, had obviously been listening to Slowdive but is always a pleasure to hear that wave of sound they make. not too loud either. will look out some of their stuff.

first band were too loud to bother myself with, sorry.
