Above image not really detailed enough, but it's actually Jerry Martini and not Larry Graham who wins this

Tom D., Thursday, 21 August 2008 12:20 (seventeen years ago)

Jerry's the one with the socks /sandals combo, right? That's a clear winner.

Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 21 August 2008 12:23 (seventeen years ago)

Yep. Freddie's orange pants/white boots combo + go-on-smell-my-pits-I-dare-you pose was a good attempt.

Tom D., Thursday, 21 August 2008 12:27 (seventeen years ago)

That album cover almost belongs on this thread

James Redd and the Blecchs, Thursday, 21 August 2008 12:50 (seventeen years ago)

silly for sure but retarded? nah. socks & sandals is classic nerdware, granted.

Thread title chosen in honour of TS: Most Retarded-Looking Barenaked Ladies Member on This Album Cover... though admittedly they are retarded looking

Tom D., Thursday, 21 August 2008 13:27 (seventeen years ago)

The guys in front are atrocious, but what does it say when you are 500 X bigger than them and sit around watching these dorks?

Props to dude on right's ridiculous side bend, though.

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:11 (seventeen years ago)

It's just struck me that the rest of the band are tiny cardboard cutouts and Sly is really there in the photo with them because it was 1967 or whenever and Photoshop had little functionality then.

Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:12 (seventeen years ago)

huh I have never seen this cover. Totally different from the vinyl copy I have.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:12 (seventeen years ago)

uh and isn't that cover missing a member?

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

ie where is Rose?

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

She wasn't in the band then

Tom D., Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

Larry posing as a grumpy gorilla isn't bad either.

Marco Damiani, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:29 (seventeen years ago)

I really don't know what Larry Graham thinks he's doing on that cover

Tom D., Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:31 (seventeen years ago)

Me too, but its beautiful! :)

Marco Damiani, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:34 (seventeen years ago)

Many times I have I listened to Sly & found myself doing the Grumpy Gorilla, the Ridiculous Side-Bend or the Go-On-Smell-My-Pits-I-Dare-You.

briania, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:44 (seventeen years ago)

don't forget the Greg-Errico-Goose-Step!

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

No votes for Cynthia looking like she's about to break into "I'll Plant My Own Tree"?

Joseph McCombs, Friday, 22 August 2008 04:55 (seventeen years ago)

okay, process of deduction...

It's not Sly...or Cynthia, even though her jazz hands are kinda goofy. Larry's pose and Jerry's wardrobe are interesting, but not truly off the deep end. This leaves Greg, who looks like an extra from the Monty Python "Ministry of Funny Walks" skit on uppers, and Freddy, who who knows what. What the fuck is that on his waist? Is that a wolverine? Hold up, Freddy wins this by a long shot.

Never thought I'd see any Sly & the Family Stone criticism on ILM. Shame on all of you!

xxxxxxxpost - It took me forever to finally see this cover after 30 years of exposure to the reissue. In retrospect, it's obvious that that one never could've existed in 1967, with that so-70's font.

Incidentally, that was my first-ever cassette, to go with the first cassette player, both birthday gifts from grandparents. No idea why they chose that tape; I'd never asked for it or even heard of 'em. (I knew "Family Affair", but had no clue who recorded it.) And I was disappointed to discover that "Underdog" had nothing to do with the cartoon.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Friday, 22 August 2008 10:49 (seventeen years ago)

I am really sorry I don't recognize them good enoough to name names, but a couple of those poses could have been take directly from the Ministry of Silly Walks.

nine years pass...

Well, well, well... what do we have here!?
