Tuomas, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:46 (seventeen years ago)

So they weren't actually called Peter, Paul and Mary?

Tuomas, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

Ohio Players

Tom D., Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)

Average White Band

Tuomas, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)

Sadly I can name members of all of these bands

Tom D., Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

Even Chicago?

Tuomas, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

Peter Cetera

Tom D., Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

Oh. I'm sorry.

Tuomas, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

No, I am

Tom D., Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

Green Day
Offspring

Tuomas, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, sadly I can name some members of nearly all of these from memory, and in some cases I can name all of them. I hate my stupid brain.

Pancakes Hackman, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

WASP

someone should watch Decline and Fall of Civilizatoin Part II: The Metal Years

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

Like, why should I be able to name multiple members of Deep Purple, Chicago or Toto? Why don't I instead know, like, the quadratic formula?

Pancakes Hackman, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

Blue Öyster Cult
OMD

Tuomas, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

Tuomas, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

Temptations

Tuomas, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

Tuomas doesn't know much about old groups

Tom D., Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

The O'Jays has a Levert in them, but that's all I know

Tom D., Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

quit while you're ahead Tuomas

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

Aphex Twin

max, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I only know the name of one of them

Tom D., Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

OK, I can't name anyone in OMD. But I can name two members of BOC.

Pancakes Hackman, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

I can name all the members of both!

Tom D., Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

I'm mostly listing old groups because they have a legendary enough status that people should theoretically know names of the band members even if they don't care about their music. I wouldn't expect the same with new groups, I mean who besides their fans could actually name the members of Linkin' Park or A*Teens?

Tuomas, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

Procol Harum

Famously, Gary Brooker and Matthew Fisher.

Lovin' Spoonful

Zalman Yanowski!

OMD Andy McCluskey!

Lovin Spoonful's John Sebastian is pretty famous/well-known

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

Milli Vanilli!

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

Snap!'s original rapper was Turbo B and one of the two producers behind the project was called Bellotti, I think.

The Dooleys

NickB, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:06 (seventeen years ago)

The Eagles - Don Henly, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh, Bernie Leadon, Timothy Schmit, Don Felder
Deep Purple - Ian Gillian, Richie Blackmore
Toto - David Paich, Steve Lukather . . . some other guys
Def Leppard - Joe Eliott, Phil Collen, RIck Allen, Viv Campbell
Boston - Brad Delp, Tom Scholz, Fran Sheehan
Chicago - Peter Cetera, Walt Parazaider . . . some other guys

Do you really know none of these names, Tuomas?

Pancakes Hackman, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:07 (seventeen years ago)

No. I've heard the name Steve Lukather, but I thought he was a solo artist.

Tuomas, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:08 (seventeen years ago)

Singer from Snow Patrol obv. unaware of the fact that pony is rhyming slang for crap... or is he?

The Killers

Tuomas, Thursday, 2 June 2016 09:02 (nine years ago)

You've got me with Stone Temple Pilots and Soundgarden, I can never tell any of those bands apart. I'm afraid I don't know any Trammps either :(

Larry 'Leg' Smith (Tom D.), Thursday, 2 June 2016 09:49 (nine years ago)

A new ILX, a new compendium of our intreped hero Tuomas staring into the vast seas of mystery.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 2 June 2016 09:50 (nine years ago)

What age is Tuomas these days?

Larry 'Leg' Smith (Tom D.), Thursday, 2 June 2016 09:58 (nine years ago)

I can scarcely believe even Tuomas has never heard of Nicole Sherzinger.

Horizontal Superman is invulnerable (aldo), Thursday, 2 June 2016 10:20 (nine years ago)

Warrant

MarkoP, Thursday, 2 June 2016 17:12 (nine years ago)

MARRS = A.R. Kane + Colourbox, and I can't name a member of either, so that's a 3-in-1 combo. And I even have an A.R. Kane LP, and "Pump Up the Volume" on cd, tape, and record.

Sushi and the Banchan (Spectrist), Thursday, 2 June 2016 17:36 (nine years ago)

You get extra points because both marrs and ar Kane made their names out of band member initials

real orgone kid (NickB), Thursday, 2 June 2016 17:40 (nine years ago)

how do you not know Danny Elfman = Oingo Boingo?

Didn't know that about MARRS and A.R. Kane!! Also having difficulty grappling with the information I've learned that a member of MARRS was also in... Skullflower?! *MIND BLOWN*

Sushi and the Banchan (Spectrist), Thursday, 2 June 2016 17:57 (nine years ago)

The National
Muse
Built to Spill
Galaxie 500
And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead
Arctic Monkeys
The Go! Team
Sunny Day Real Estate
The Wrens
The Hold Steady

basically, if you can think of a popular indie-ish band from the past 30 years, chances are I know little to nothing about them

Dominique, Thursday, 2 June 2016 18:04 (nine years ago)

You've never heard of Matthew Bellamy, Bryce Dessner (a decent composer), or Damon & Naomi?

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Thursday, 2 June 2016 18:10 (nine years ago)

(I'll admit that I can't name members of #s 5-10, even though I own a SDRE album. I don't consider any of those bands famous, though. I doubt most people on a Worcester city bus could name those bands.)

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Thursday, 2 June 2016 18:12 (nine years ago)

the first two no, Damon & Naomi I have heard of, but couldn't tell you which band they belong to (actually I thought they were a band)

Dominique, Thursday, 2 June 2016 18:13 (nine years ago)

The Beatles.

sarahell, Thursday, 2 June 2016 18:13 (nine years ago)

They are but they used to be in Galaxie 500. xp to Dominique

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Thursday, 2 June 2016 18:14 (nine years ago)

You've got me with Stone Temple Pilots and Soundgarden, I can never tell any of those bands apart.

Come on, Scott Weiland's death was big news about six months ago.

I don't know who is in this band, but I know they are famous

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Thursday, 2 June 2016 18:18 (nine years ago)

maybe they call brands different names in Canada?

sarahell, Thursday, 2 June 2016 18:19 (nine years ago)

Come on, Scott Weiland's death was big news about six months ago.

Indeed, I knew he was in one of 'those' bands, didn't know which one.

Larry 'Leg' Smith (Tom D.), Thursday, 2 June 2016 18:25 (nine years ago)

Kings of Leon

MarkoP, Thursday, 2 June 2016 19:32 (nine years ago)

The Dixie Chicks

MarkoP, Thursday, 2 June 2016 19:33 (nine years ago)

I couldn't name members of those two either, nor e.g. Imagine Dragons, but I wouldn't have thought that there's a strong reason why non-fans would know the names of individual members in these cases. Grace Slick, on the other hand, should be familiar to anyone with a passing interest in rock history.

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Thursday, 2 June 2016 20:17 (nine years ago)

Btw, Dominique, you could try out Dessner's _St. Carolyn by the Sea_. It's a pleasant contemporary tonal piece for orchestra and electric guitar. I never really listened to the National but I enjoy this piece.

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Thursday, 2 June 2016 20:18 (nine years ago)

(xp) Tuomas does not have a passing interest in rock history.

Larry 'Leg' Smith (Tom D.), Thursday, 2 June 2016 20:25 (nine years ago)

Well, yeah, that's evident from this thread.

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Thursday, 2 June 2016 20:26 (nine years ago)

Loverboy

You have obviously not read the greatest ilx thread of all time, which got to the heart of the question of whether the cover of Loverboy's Get Lucky features a man's ass or woman's ass. Unfortunately, I can't find the thread.

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Thursday, 2 June 2016 20:30 (nine years ago)

It took me a minute to remember Jani Lane.

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Thursday, 2 June 2016 20:32 (nine years ago)

I wanted to say Dani Filth first but I knew that had to be wrong.

this is very OTM.
and i read mojo, and they have done massive features re this lot !

mark e, Thursday, 2 June 2016 21:12 (nine years ago)

I just meant it's likely he's encountered the "Well, yeah" ilx-meme a few times on various threads, whether or not he knows they're former Eagles

Deleted in some Google beef iirc

I am using your worlds, Friday, 3 June 2016 02:06 (nine years ago)

Just remembered that Mike Reno is the lead singer of Loverboy, so that doesn't count.

I did realize today that I couldn't name a single member of the band Slayer, but I think I'm in the minority on that.

MarkoP, Friday, 3 June 2016 04:08 (nine years ago)

I sometimes introduced myself as Mike Reno when I worked in call centres. (I'd try to use a different name each call some nights. You take your kicks where you can with that job.) No one ever questioned that one. My supervisor in Montreal and I had kind of a post-xhuxk fascination with Loverboy.

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Friday, 3 June 2016 04:29 (nine years ago)

Pretty sure I couldn't name anyone in Harlequin

SPACE IS FAKE make no mistake! (Myonga Vön Bontee), Friday, 3 June 2016 04:44 (nine years ago)

Lol, I couldn't either.

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Friday, 3 June 2016 04:56 (nine years ago)

I watched the Netflix documentary on Eagles a while ago, so yeah, I know those names now.

Thomson and Thompson, duh!

Tuomas, Friday, 3 June 2016 07:05 (nine years ago)

And yeah, I'd come across the name "Don Henley" on ILM before, I even recognized his hit tune when it played in the documentary, I just didn't know he used to be in the Eagles. The doc also taught me that catchy "Heat is On" tune from my childhood was also by a former Eagle.
