Dude's had the same tone for like a billion years and maybe it's like the quintessential sound of fusion guitar or whatever but I really hate it and I think it sounds really really dated today on something like Herbie's The Joni Letters. I even love Bird of Fire completely in spite of Scofield's sound. Am I weird and he's completely classic?

He's the prime mover on Miles' only listenable output in the 80s, for whatever that's worth. I've never heard him on his own.

Sparkle Motion, Friday, 22 August 2008 00:03 (seventeen years ago)

I only have Hand Jive. I haven't listened to it much, but the booklet has lots of pictures of him making weird motions with his hands, so classic.

That second clip is sick, too.

Does Scofield play on "One Word"? I didn't know he ever did anything with Mahavishnu. He's not listed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birds_of_Fire

What do you dislike about Scofield's tone?

But McLaughlin's tone surely has changed over the years, unless I'm misunderstanding? His sound on In a Silent Way is quite different from the Mahavishnu sound, which differs from his sound with Shakti, which is different from the sound on Aura (not to mention the classical stuff, which may be unfair to bring). Even if much of this just has to do with effects and production... (And I didn't know he was on the Hancock album?)

Sundar, Friday, 22 August 2008 02:37 (seventeen years ago)

"unfair to bring up"

Sundar, Friday, 22 August 2008 02:37 (seventeen years ago)

>_<

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 22 August 2008 02:39 (seventeen years ago)

That's kinda sorta my point though, that on River Loueke sounds a lot like Uberjam era Scofield or Bird of Fire era McLaughlin, that kinda high-mids I AM PLAYING FUSION GUITAR tone

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 22 August 2008 02:40 (seventeen years ago)

Speaking of McLaughlin, wazzabout his educational DVDs? They have some staunch supporters.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Friday, 22 August 2008 02:41 (seventeen years ago)

the first song on Inner Mounting Flame has Manowar levels of triumphation

BigLurks, Friday, 22 August 2008 02:56 (seventeen years ago)

John Scofield will go more trad neck warm goo if it is a classic jazz setup, but he isn't afraid to throw on effects and get pretty weird at times. Scofield is the only jazzbo guitarist I know that will get down with a Digitech Whammy pedal every now and then.

McLaughlin's electric tone is all over the place. His tone with Mahavishnu is really high gain for the time. Later on he started using guitar synths and all. Even when he plays electric guitar now, it isn't nothing like the Lifetime or Mahavishnu kind of sound. His tone is way more clean and closer to traditional 'jazz guitar' kind of stuff.

guitar isn't one of my favorite jazz instruments. i like sax, trumpet, piano, drums, trombone better...maybe not trombone...but maybe tuba! (on those arthur blythe records)

on the mclaughlin

Oilyrags, Monday, 25 August 2008 23:13 (seventeen years ago)

Epic fail, hoos!

I could listen to the high-mids I AM PLAYING FUSION GUITAR tone on "Dawn" by Mahavishnu every day and not get tired of it, because it is awesome.

jim, Monday, 25 August 2008 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

I do prefer his acoustic records though. My favorites are the first one by Shakti and the one with Goodbye Pork Pie Hat.

Oilyrags, Monday, 25 August 2008 23:15 (seventeen years ago)

i like his tone. to me the stereotypical fusion guitar sound has more distortion and reverb, like mike stern or whoever, and scofield's sound is a little cleaner. and he's got all those funky little bends & scratches and shit.

Jordan, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 15:45 (seventeen years ago)

oh, mclaughlin. those first couple mahavishnu records are sick but he might be the worst part.

Jordan, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 15:48 (seventeen years ago)

how can i be the only person that voted some ol bullshit?
