Toronto is filled with great bands that are either a) dead, b) great live show, spotty records or c) too idiosyncratic or unruly to get noticed outside the city. I want to hear about similar secret bands in other cities.

Representing my hometown, you could just peruse Carl Wilson's blog. But I'll refer you to:

Wayne McGhie and The Sounds Of Joy - a fabulous funk band from the late 60s/early 70s.
Fifth Column - a Slits-esque band at the forefront of homocore, first two records are ace.
Rat-Drifting - a label that releases various projects of Eric Chenaux (late of Phleg Camp), Ryan Driver, Doug Tielli, Deep Dark United, Drumheller and others.
Pony Da Look - four girls with synthesizers and excellent fantasy-oriented lyrics.
Bluefog - another great label that releases Rick White (Eric's Trip, Elevator), Wyrd Visions, The Unintended (Sadies members), Andre Ethier (The Deadly Snakes), and my current favourite local band, $100.

The weird thing about Brooklyn, is that no one good stays secret for long.
But I think that these bands deserve more love than they get

Whoa. Talk Normal's "Warrior" begins exactly like Diamanda Galas' version of "Thrill Is Gone", but like... like... the opposite.

Love Drunkdriver!
