Polling England By The Pound

Of course almost any track would have been a winner in most album polls. "Firth Of Fifth" is the ultimate winner here, thanks to the best ever guitar solo amongst other things.

I try not to hate Genesis as much as I did after I 180'd on them in high school, but last year I got the remaster of this record and there just isn't a good song on it.

This is tough. So many life-affirming moments on this album. "Dancing..." wins for me but "Firth of Fifth" and "Cinema Show" are great too.

(One of the others might be a better composition, ultimately, but "Dancing..." just has moments that I love, whether or not it all hangs together.)

which is the trance-like song here? which goes beyond? which has this synth(?) theme where i used to think this would be the perfect moment where the world could stand still? it hasn't got a lot of lyrics. is it "firth of fifth"?

i think so. "battle of epping forest" was quite similar but rather annoying iirc.

"Battle of Epping Forest" is the worst song they ever wrote and I'm including "Illegal Alien" there. Not the stuff with that brickie on vocals tho.

Cinema Show. But my actual favorite parts are the opening of "dancing" coupled with "aisle of plenty", I think that tune and the lyrics are pretty haunting.

so obsessing about this album at the moment, moreso than any time since i first heard it when i was 9... Firth Of The Fifth would be my choice, though it grew live, and love the version on Seconds Out, and circa bootlets

Did anybody see the documentary about them that's currently running on Showtime? It's good. I wish there were more live Lamb Lies Down on Broadway footage. It looks insane, in both a good and bad way.

You can tell Peter Gabriel and Tony Banks hate each other.

i didn't watch it because Hackett was so angry about it. tony banks seems singularly impossible to like.

you can look up Musical Box Lamb Lies Down concerts, they're as authentic as it gets, and yes they're pretty insane, particulary when you consider the time.

Didn't like this record 25+ years ago, and not enjoying it any more now either. Dunno if w33d would help, even.

"Cinema Show" should have won this, one of my favourite ever Genesis tunes. Banks' extended solo at the end is just magnificent. The version on Seconds Out actually trumps the studio version for me.

so far "firth of fifth" has been my favorite since finally hearing the album. those organ chords are so damn majestic.

i'm also inordinately fond of "after the ordeal" -- the closing section reminds me vaguely of the end of some rpg.

what an amazing album, so many great songs. my fave has always been "the battle of epping forest". there is a metaphysical quality to tony banks keyboard play all over the album but especially in that song around the 4 minute mark. additionally it goes into so many different directions, stops and starts again. almost like a roxy music song.

Dancing With the Moonlit Knight, if only for including the pun "The knights of the green shield stamp and shout", understood by a diminishing and geographically-limited number of people!

second half of Cinema Show is so damn good, only thing is I think the version on Seconds Out actually rocks harder
