All drugs inspire good music. Why booze not on list?

contenderizer, Thursday, 28 August 2008 17:21 (seventeen years ago)

Cocaine, easy. Not a very creative drug.

chap, Thursday, 28 August 2008 17:24 (seventeen years ago)

All drugs inspire good music. Why booze not on list?

I was going to include alcohol but it's more difficult to stick to a certain genre or era.

Moka, Thursday, 28 August 2008 17:25 (seventeen years ago)

According to Joe Boyd, it's cocaine.
But bad music is Bad Music no matter what drugs you're doing.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 28 August 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

I'll go with Meth. Inspired god-awful alt-rock from the 90's such as Elastica, the Dandy Warhols and all the usual cast in mtv's 120 minutes.

Moka, Thursday, 28 August 2008 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

Meth = Motorhead, Suicide, therefore greatness. Cocaine = Fleetwod Mac, Steely Dan, therefore greatness.

contenderizer, Thursday, 28 August 2008 17:55 (seventeen years ago)

Combine them, and you get Johnny Cash.

contenderizer, Thursday, 28 August 2008 17:58 (seventeen years ago)

I'll be a curmudgeon and say X, though I'd presumably reverse that opinion 180 degrees if I ever tried the stuff.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Thursday, 28 August 2008 18:02 (seventeen years ago)

speed and meth are different though aren't they?

Thomas, Thursday, 28 August 2008 18:03 (seventeen years ago)

speed = category, meth = instance

Cocaine easily, although I'm having a bit of trouble working out the difference between LSD-inspired music and mushrooms-inspired music.

Matt DC, Thursday, 28 August 2008 20:02 (seventeen years ago)

Cocaine's hard to parse, though. It's had a lot to do with the destruction/down years of a great many musical talents, but tons of bands do tons of coke when they're on, too.

contenderizer, Thursday, 28 August 2008 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

Cocaine is going to win this hands down.

Twattish as those guys are, I bet they're listening to some pretty bangin tunes.

I wonder how much great dance music has been made whilst actually on ecstasy, rather than just been inspired retrospectively by the feelings it produces. I for one would find it nigh-on impossible to focus on a meticulous process like programming while I was actually pilling.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e3/Ecstacy_monogram.jpg

Geir Hongro, Friday, 29 August 2008 08:59 (seventeen years ago)

OK, now I found it. Ecstacy, no doubt.

LSD has influenced the best music although in retrospect the fate of one Roger Barrett shows it may not have been such a good idea to take it.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 29 August 2008 09:01 (seventeen years ago)

Cocaine would be my second pick. A lot of usually good acts have released extraordinarily bad albums under the influence of that particular drug. I mean, "Be Here Now".....

Geir Hongro, Friday, 29 August 2008 09:06 (seventeen years ago)

you assume they had no, for the previous two?

Mark G, Friday, 29 August 2008 09:10 (seventeen years ago)

I wonder how much great dance music has been made whilst actually on ecstasy, rather than just been inspired retrospectively by the feelings it produces.

About ten years ago, I asked that question to someone on the fringes of the hard trance scene. According to him, it was commonplace for all involved in the creative process to get royally tw@tted.

I'm voting shrooms.

mike t-diva, Friday, 29 August 2008 10:04 (seventeen years ago)

you assume they had no, for the previous two?

They surely couldn't afford it for "Definitely Maybe" and that one didn't sell that much before "Morning Glory" was released either. Cocaine isn't exactly cheap, you know....

Geir Hongro, Friday, 29 August 2008 10:14 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah you never see members of small time indie bands on coke.

Matt DC, Friday, 29 August 2008 10:16 (seventeen years ago)

They were signed to Ignition Management, who signed a licensing deal with Creation. Alan McGee make it look like it was his idea (once again..).

Trust me, there was money around.

blueski, Friday, 29 August 2008 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

Bactine

henry s, Friday, 29 August 2008 15:21 (seventeen years ago)

If you approach it as "which has inspired the least good music", def. the horse, turns musicians dull. If you approach it as "which has inspired the most bad music", pot takes it far and away, but it's also the most widely used, so of course it has. I still haven't figured out what the difference between acid music and shroom music is.

Voting heroin.

The Reverend, Friday, 29 August 2008 16:18 (seventeen years ago)

I wasn't including mushrooms, since lsd users are inclined to do mushrooms as well, yet I find mushrooms more related to psych-folk hippie musicians that wont do chemicals, and LSD to rock music from the late 60's and 70's (although it is still a huge influence on certain genres and there are many psych-folk musicians who do chemicals either way).

Moka, Friday, 29 August 2008 19:11 (seventeen years ago)

Meth, heroine and coke are by certain standards, violent drugs, they cause too much deterioration on the user's mind and body. Personally I think ecstasy and pot inspire the best music and they are low-risk drugs but I'm too much of a fan of electronic music.

Moka, Friday, 29 August 2008 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

the correct answer is anti-depressants

Matt DC, Friday, 29 August 2008 20:49 (seventeen years ago)

i voted for E. i love music inspired by all of these drugs* but E has by far inspired the most insipid garbage.

*= i don't think coke 'inspires' much more than extreme attention to detail. maybe more of a studio engineer's drug?

Got to thinking about PCP early this morning as I was listening to Siouxsie & the Banshees "Dazzle" which mentions angel dust.

Then when I got to work, I noticed this front-page article about the resurgence of PCP use in DC.

So what's PCP music? What was Joseph McCombs talking about upthread? Are there any artists who have been notably influenced by PCP in their songcraft?

Are you guys being serious? Surely the whole minimal house, dub-house, clicks and pops, bands like My Toys Like Me, and to an extent dubstep are geared towards the K-floor?

the next grozart, Friday, 20 March 2009 11:50 (sixteen years ago)

I read the Reynolds article, but wasn't really convinced by it. Isn't he talking about a 3 or 4 group micro-scene? As far as the minimal stuff goes, I've heard the term "ketamine house", but I've also heard "heroin house" used to describe mid-90s dub techno.

I went through a big ket phase a few (almost 10) years ago, and minimal/dub/clicks-n-pops, or whatever, really doesn't seem to me like it's inspired by the drug at all. Not a huge fan of "wonky", but if that other stuff mentioned is inspired by k, then I definitely disagree with NI.

The Lost Boys Buff Guy Playing Sax (rockapads), Friday, 20 March 2009 18:27 (sixteen years ago)

people who do k anywhere but on their living room floor are fools, btw.

The Lost Boys Buff Guy Playing Sax (rockapads), Friday, 20 March 2009 18:27 (sixteen years ago)

From the Reynolds article:
"A vial of ketamine ... is this the drug that's feeding the wonky phenomenon?"

Isn't that a quote from Brass Eye?

I'm siding with Ecsstasy too... I'm starting to feel that a lot of those coked up 80s productions have a certain sort of charm in retrospect... which I've still yet to find in bangin choons.
