when people ask me when exactly it was that i first knew for sure that i have bad taste in music i will be able to refer back to this helpful and informative thread.

and then i will breathe a HUGE sigh of relief that i don't have to listen to this shit.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 28 August 2008 20:14 (seventeen years ago)

Glad to help

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 28 August 2008 20:49 (seventeen years ago)

Layla is the big gorilla. Disc 1 side 1 is unimpeachable. But I am voting for Little Wing.

that's not my post, Friday, 29 August 2008 04:33 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Sunday, 31 August 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

"Why Does Love Got to Be so Sad" is so great that I forgive the grammar.

Joseph McCombs, Sunday, 31 August 2008 23:55 (seventeen years ago)

"Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out" unplugged > album version

musically, Monday, 1 September 2008 01:55 (seventeen years ago)

I'm with Joseph. "So Sad" was my first thought, even before "Layla" itself and before the thread even opened.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Monday, 1 September 2008 07:30 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Monday, 1 September 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Good thing I voted for "I Looked Away" instead of "Bell Bottom Blues."

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 1 September 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

I didn't vote, but "Layla" not winning is laughable. It is perhaps the only classic song Eric Clapton has ever written.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 1 September 2008 23:36 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, especially since it was about the wife of a Beatle.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 00:23 (seventeen years ago)

I'll grant that only the songs that deserved votes got votes.

Joseph McCombs, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 02:49 (seventeen years ago)

I briefly thought about voting for either "It's Too Late" or "Little Wing," but I figured they were both covers so I passed.

So how does this album stack up against the live stuff? A friend was playing some of the Fillmore stuff this weekend and it sounded really good to my ears. Thanks to over-exposure to "Layla" and the general shittiness of Clapton's material since I've been aware of him, I've avoided Derek and the Dominos - but now I'm wondering if that was a mistake.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 13 December 2010 17:01 (fifteen years ago)

I don't know much about the live stuff, but this is one of the greatest rock albums of all time. The rest of Clapton's stuff does nothing for me, but this entire record is absolutely essential. Keep On Growing is my favorite, but there are so many others......

kornrulez6969, Monday, 13 December 2010 17:25 (fifteen years ago)

this poll results puzzle me. no votes for Anyday or I Am Yours? and so little votes? I'm not big on Clapton or guitar albums but this one is quite huge.

gospodin simmel, Monday, 13 December 2010 17:31 (fifteen years ago)

I would have voted "Roll It Over" if it were on this album.

billstevejim, Monday, 13 December 2010 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

xp
Yeah, voter turnout was lame here.

I think people dismiss this record before hearing it because of title track fatigue and Clapton's solo career. They don't know what they're missing.

What is Roll It Over?

kornrulez6969, Monday, 13 December 2010 17:41 (fifteen years ago)

It might have been a b-side.. There's a live version on the Rainbow concert LP.

I just heard a snippet of guitar from "Layla" from someone's ringtone at work--and it sounded like the coolest thing ever. Even the sound quality seemed really good. How does it suddenly sound better coming from someone's cellphone unexpectedly? Also, I think I had a flashback to being on the beach, for one brief moment. (This year is making me realize I don't have to actively do that much except keep poking around music. My taste will always shift and re-shuffle and if things seem a little dull for a while, something will come along to excite me.)

Did anybody tell you that your voice is like Abd Al Halim's? (_Rudipherous_), Thursday, 27 June 2013 18:56 (twelve years ago)

Light In The Attic is fixing to put out a twofer of Bobby Whitlock's post-Layla solo joints.

nah it rules

brimstead, Saturday, 13 June 2020 00:45 (five years ago)

'Layla' and 'Bell Bottom Blues' both rule. I could do without the rest, mostly.

pomenitul, Saturday, 13 June 2020 00:47 (five years ago)

‘keep on growing’ and ‘why does love have to be so sad’ also rule

ACABincalifornia (voodoo chili), Saturday, 13 June 2020 00:56 (five years ago)

“I looked away”? “Anyday”? “Keep on growin?” “I am yours”? “Why does love...”? It’s a really heavy album. It’s long and bloated and overbearing and the songs go on for too long. it feels like hanging out with friends, except for the end of Layla which feels like death. it kicks ass all the way through. It bleeds.

The coda is still always perfect

Tyler Perry's Cystitis (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 21 November 2023 15:26 (two years ago)

"Key to the Highway" alternates between the typical Clapton late 60s thing of killing a blues song through heat death, and more subtle passages where the volume lowers and the groove is allowed to breathe, but it's less boring than I remembered. But the poll above is pretty accurate, except for "Anyday", which is a fantastic track.

glumdalclitch, Tuesday, 21 November 2023 16:17 (two years ago)

coda >>>>> first 3 minutes

corrs unplugged, Wednesday, 22 November 2023 13:19 (two years ago)

yeah totally

Tyler Perry's Cystitis (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 22 November 2023 13:29 (two years ago)

Agree - first part is “Great riff - but do you have anything else?”; coda 3 minutes later is “oh - you do! You should do this more often”.

Dr Drudge (Bob Six), Wednesday, 22 November 2023 13:49 (two years ago)

Not even Clapton's Unplugged version could destroy the long reach of "Layla." It should have got all the votes.

Wow. It's never been my favourite album, but I guess I have a kind of historical respect or something for it. I used to take it out every few years and give it another try, but haven't done that for a while.

clemenza, Sunday, 10 August 2025 23:33 (six months ago)

Amusingly, Zak Starkey paid him a tribute and Pete Townshend chimes in on the comments with “He crashed his Ferrari Daytona near Eric’s house.”

Reggie Clanker (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 11 August 2025 03:25 (six months ago)

Does he have any lead vocals all the way through any tunes or is it just harmony vocals and occasional bridges

Reggie Clanker (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 12 August 2025 01:59 (six months ago)

Or call and response with Clapton.

Reggie Clanker (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 12 August 2025 02:13 (six months ago)

The last song ("Throne Tree In The Garden") is all him, IIRC.

He had a couple solo albums right after the breakup, stacked with his heavy friends, and on them he redid a few of his D&B/D&D compositions. Future Days did a twofer. They have the moments, but I found them disappointing overall.

Lithium Just Madison (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 12 August 2025 02:29 (six months ago)

buzza, Tuesday, 12 August 2025 07:01 (six months ago)

"Thorn Tree in the Garden" is one of my all-time fave album closers. Fits the record perfectly. BTW about a dog, not a woman.

Whitlock's contributions to this great album remain underappreciated. RIP Bobby

This album a whole different animal from Slowhand solo material.

This album a whole different animal from Slowhand solo material.

Yup. I think I posted this before, but if Clapton hadn't survived his heroin addiction, I don't doubt he would've been remembered as a massive loss to rock music, partly because he was coming off his greatest work and who knows where he would've gone and what he would've done had he lived past 26 or 27. Well, we know and to say it's been a disappointment would be a massive understatement (though I think 461 plays like a good survivor's album characterized by well-earned calm and relief rather than sleepiness).

birdistheword, Tuesday, 12 August 2025 17:17 (six months ago)

"keep on growing" and "why does love got to be so sad" are darn great songs. "bell bottom blues," too, in a different way

gestures broadly at...everything (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 12 August 2025 17:53 (six months ago)

This was one of the earliest records where I experienced conflict with the Classic Rock Superego, when I still thought something was wrong with my perceptions because I couldn't appreciate boring blues retreads like "Key to the Highway" or "Have You Ever Loved a Woman". It was only later that I realized that 95% of these "classic albums" lists don't care about anything but the three favourite songs or so, as long as the filler doesn't offend them too badly.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 14 August 2025 19:20 (six months ago)

“tell the truth” is also kind of fun
