I met a shiek from Mozambique who led me to the Congo
He dreamed to go to Mexico and sample a burrito
it must have been a hundred and ten
Under the oaks I was telling some jokes
and thinkin' I had it made
Gettin' on with the folks, havin' some Coke
and coolin' off in the shade
My tempature had risen again,
and it must have been a hundred and ten
I took a boat that couldn't float to Rio de Janeiro
So with my scuba I swam to Cuba
but I'll be gone tomorrow
ZZ Top, "Shiek"

But what does 'havin Coke with the folks' have to do with it? Obvious considering ZZ Top played at Bush's inauguration! (Part of the reason I like Bush, better taste in entertainment than the Gore/Clinton AOR dullards!) Wonder if they played "Arrested for Driving While Blind"! (Great 'Salon' article explaining Bush's behavior from the perspective of another ex-lush - gist being that his notorious incoherence comes from having TOO MUCH going on in his brain, not 'not enough', and most of that 'too much' is volatile stuff that wouldn't go over well (i.e., article imagines Bush thinking "Why don't you stick those subsidies up your ass, dickwad" or something, but obviously has to think of something more delicate to say and occasionally fails. Also considering Bush apparently detoxed himself with his spiritual adviser rather than entering a 'program' jibes with ZZ's defense of the importance of individual choice in a free-market economy re the Miller/Black Crowes tour sponsorship dispute [Remember Dave Marsh re Who! "Pete Townshend should know better, he's a recovering alcoholic!" SInce when is stadium rock the Oprah Winfrey show? 'RECOVERING'??? Don't go there! I bet he never complained about "Acid Queen" - oh right, that's DRUGS which revolutionary boomers took so they're OK then]).

Also, the mispelled title and bonkers geography of this song must be a tip of the Skull-&-Bones club cap!

Does anyone else notice a sample of "Waitin' for the Bus" on 'Fantastic Damage'? Is that what it is? If it is then hopefully he picked it cuz he liked the groove, not because he wanted some 'rawk' stuff and picked the first song on the album cuz that would be lame.

ZZ Top just played at a combination Indian reservation and casino around here. I was gonna go, but tickets were $30! So I think they've spiraled down the American version of only touring in Japan: the Vegas route to inevitable self-destruction.

Nah, make that Reno...

a) Also on 'Tres Hombres' is the tune "Master of Sparks" - reference to the amount of executions in Texas?

b) El-P also refs the 'Bilderberg Group' which makes him either 'funny' or incredibly idiotic

I heard the El-P album the other day and noticed that reference. I was bemused.

Was that the part that went: "Those sick luminaries are always on the move/They never come together in the same place twice/so as to evade detection/They only meet once a year/for a long weekend in May or June"? And ZZ Top is great. Asleep in the desert you'll find a beautiful oasis in Tejas. And I just got paid a few days ago. If you aren't a lover and fighter you aren't living. And so on.
