'Mr Roboto' - Styx

Not specifically taking on the character of a robot as much as masquerading as one, but still.

MacDara, Sunday, 31 August 2008 11:22 (seventeen years ago)

bionic by placebo is about sex with a robot.

ledge, Sunday, 31 August 2008 11:25 (seventeen years ago)

I reject "Mr. Roboto" -- that the narrator is not actually a robot is the entire point of the song, dude!

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 31 August 2008 15:06 (seventeen years ago)

"Illegal Alien," by Genesis, probably not what you're looking for.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 31 August 2008 15:07 (seventeen years ago)

Goldie Lookin' Chain, "Half Man Half Machine" of course.

out and out hilarity. seriously fuckingexcellent

Philistines JR had a robot voice in one of their classics, but I think it may have been a sample of Stephen Hawking

Arnie & the Terminators - I'll Be Back

Siegbran, Sunday, 31 August 2008 15:13 (seventeen years ago)

He's looking for love because:

"I just want to be treated right like any terminator"

Siegbran, Sunday, 31 August 2008 15:15 (seventeen years ago)

i always thought "digital love" was sung in the voice of some sort of artifically intellegent computer/robot guy "dreaming" about human intimacy and so on, but a quick look at the lyrics suggest that this is highly debatable

Most of Anthony Rother's tracks. I nominate "Little Computer People". Also, Sun Ra, although that's not so much lyrical as him claiming he actually came from Saturn.

Neil S, Sunday, 31 August 2008 20:22 (seventeen years ago)

I think "The Robot Speaks" by Damon & Naomi might fit the bill, but it's kinda hard to make out the words so I'm not sure.

The robot in Future Bible Heroes' "The Lonely Robot" is definitely looking for love, but the song is sung by a 3rd person narrator.

Having ended all life, absorbed all other robots,
ruler of the cosmos, she walks into the sunset
But there is no darkness
Her laser-gaze is itself a weapon
And no sleep defends her from the nightmare of oblivion
So she wakes a new world made entirely out of lightwaves,
memories of movies, and chance determinations
Then she watches random characters and situations,
endless combinations with very little input
But she sees the ending
Every clock finds its equilibrium
So she introduces the absurdist contradictions
Anything can follow, but the actors can't believe that,
so they keep pretending the script is real and means things
So the lonely robot, with no feeling for the actors,
just erased the whole thing, which -- true -- had not existed
And a trillion stories all came abruptly to a non-ending,
and a trillion people suddenly stopped non-existing
Thus was born a new world from the movies of the old one,
and the lonely robot was given non-existence

There's an italo song called "automatic Lover" which certainly fits the bill. There are a couple of different versions too. One by Johnny Chingas, another by Sylvia ... and at least 1 other version, but I can't remember the artist.

servotron are the other band that spring to mind. i did think they were all for wiping out humans but first track on their myspace is called 'erotomatic' so maybe not.

Data (Brent Spiner) also had an lp out called 'ol' yellow eyes is back' but i don't think he songs are done in character. (Spock was never a robot)
