every one of these singles falls squarely into one of two categories

1) do not even remember the existence of this song
2) COMPLETELY AMAZING IN EVERY WAY

my vote goes to the murder remix of 'ain't it funny', which has the best intro to any pop song ever ("IT! MUST! BE THE ASS!"), the best outro to any pop song ever ("baby - is that your girlfriend? i got my boyfriend, maybe we can be friends - DANANANANANA!") and, IN BETWEEN, a wonderfully slinky melody. every so often i still get obsessed with it and want to listen to nothing else.

silver medal goes to 'love don't cost a thing' - those backing vox in the verses ("you don't understand...") and the huge synth gong sounds!

bronze is between 'get right' and its incredibly insistent sax loop, and 'jenny from the block' ("i'm real even on oprah" <3 <3 <3 ).

also, she basically reinvented multiplatform branding for entertainers in the 20th century, right? it's pretty much the default position for any self-respecting diva now.

I always liked "Ain't It Funny."

genital grinder (roxymuzak), Friday, 12 September 2008 14:54 (seventeen years ago)

I just listened to the "Ain't It Funny" remix because it's been too long since I've heard "IT! MUST! BE THE ASS!" It really is something special.

Still, I think "Hold It Don't Drop It" is my favorite single. If only it had had a chance!

!Alicia!, Friday, 12 September 2008 15:03 (seventeen years ago)

def the I'm Real remix

peace, love, and ban deeznuts (The Reverend), Friday, 12 September 2008 19:08 (seventeen years ago)

"Get Right" just about over "Hold You Down". The "Get Right" mix with Fabolous is better yet.

If You Had My Love

^^duhhh

its sad he was a ringtone poster (J0rdan S.), Friday, 12 September 2008 19:11 (seventeen years ago)

waiting for tonight

Patrick Leahy, (D)-VT (deej), Friday, 12 September 2008 19:28 (seventeen years ago)

Play, followed by Jenny from the Block, which is great despite being risible.

john q deeznutz (Frogman Henry), Friday, 12 September 2008 19:29 (seventeen years ago)

"waiting for tonight" is so 90s, i love it

genital grinder (roxymuzak), Saturday, 13 September 2008 15:01 (seventeen years ago)

Voted "Play" but it might have been "Waiting For Tonight". Both are great while I generally dislike most of her other output (Well, "Jenny From The Block" is OK, in a way)

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 13 September 2008 15:05 (seventeen years ago)

I'll be the only vote for "I'm Gonna Be Alright."

Joseph McCombs, Saturday, 13 September 2008 15:53 (seventeen years ago)

1. Jenny From The Block
2. Play
3. Get Right

but also like the YMO+Zapp-ness of original 'I'm Real'

Aare-Reuss Böögg (blueski), Saturday, 13 September 2008 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

Play, followed by Jenny from the Block, which is great despite being risible.

'jenny from the block' is partly great because it's risible. "i'm down to earth like this, rockin' this business" sung with a totally straight face. amazing.

lex pretend, Saturday, 13 September 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

"Waiting For Tonight."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 13 September 2008 17:16 (seventeen years ago)

1. I'm Real (Remix)
2. Play
3. Jenny From The Block
4. Ain't It Funny (Remix)
5. Waiting For Tonight
6. Get Right

Tim F, Saturday, 13 September 2008 22:17 (seventeen years ago)

jenny from the block im not feeling because of the beatnuts sample bite, plus the beatnuts song is way better and convincing

i think 'get right' is way good tho

Patrick Leahy, (D)-VT (deej), Saturday, 13 September 2008 22:26 (seventeen years ago)

Get Right even though Amerie did it better with One Thing.

I know, right?, Saturday, 13 September 2008 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

where is "Control Myself"? My favourite by miles. It's absence means the vastly underrated "Que Hiciste" gets my vote.

danzig, Saturday, 13 September 2008 23:30 (seventeen years ago)

oh i couldn't be bothered to go through the songs j-lo's only the featured artist on. 'control myself' is really great though obv, write-in votes welcome.

one year passes...

Oops:

Jennifer Lopez has spent most of her singing career at Sony Music Epic Records. The bland version of what happened, I’m told, is that the contract period had ended and that Lopez had fulfilled it with her last two singles, and that Lopez and Stringer decided together not to move forward with an album. Others insist the Sony label dropped her. There also is disagreement on how finished her upcoming album was before it was canceled. Internet reports say her 7th studio album, titled "Love?", was supposed to come out in April and featured production from Danja, Jim Jonsin, Darkchild, Chris n Teeb from Dropzone, and The Neptunes among others. A song from it titled "Fresh Out The Oven" surfaced online in October 2009 as a buzz single and reached #1 on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Songs chart. But the official lead single, "Louboutins", had its radio debut on November 23 following the song's premiere and performance at the 2009 American Music Awards and then peaked at #31 on the Hot Dance Club Songs chart.

Lopez insiders claim to me the album was "by no means done" and everyone was "only a few songs into it" and "unlike movie dates, street dates rarely hold in the music biz". But that album was real enough to delay the release of her upcoming CBS Film, The Back-Up Plan (see below). Others tell me the album isn't being released because "Louboutins" bombed, as did her performance at the American Music Awards, and Sony Music execs "aren't sure who her audience is anymore. Where once she had little girls, she's been supplanted by Beyonce, Gaga, and Rhianna. Lots of fighting going on between Benny Medina (who, of course, is spending their money like it's 10 years ago) and the label."

But when I began inquiring about this, her manager Benny Medina emailed this morning to confirm the split. "Jennifer had a wonderful relationship with the Sony Music group, and they have shared many successes together, but the time was right to make a change that best serves the direction her career as an actress and recording artist. She is grateful and appreciative to everyone Sony for all that they accomplished together."

The Lopez insiders claim the decision was "a mutual one" between the star and label’s current CEO Rob Stringer (younger brother to Sony parent company CEO Howard Stringer). They say the two had a meeting at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles during Grammy week, and, after a "heart-to-heart" conversation, the star and executive decided to end the long relationship. “It was all very amicable. They hugged at the end of the meeting,” claims one. Meanwhile, I understand that Sony will still be releasing her "Greatest Hits" album in the fall.

Supposedly, Lopez has not wasted any time getting signed elsewhere: it’s rumored she is already in talks with Island Def Jam’s bigwig L.A. Reid to come to his label. Granted, this is a tough time for music artists, especially those like Lopez who were once big in the biz and now are battling not only the changed economics and rampant piracy but also the moving target of today’s music fans. JLo insiders insist none of this is fazing Lopez, who took time off to have two kids with her recording star husband, Marc Anthony, and who is just now returning to her acting career with the release of the feature The Back Up Plan.

But CBS Films recently announced it's postponing the release of that romantic comedy to April 23rd, same weekend as Wall Street 2 and MacGruber. It had been scheduled for April 16th which then got too crowded. And before that January 22nd when it was to be the first CBS Film. Complicating The Back-Up Plan's release as well was that J-Lo/Sony album and exactly when she'd be available to do publicity for the film. Well, no one has to worry about that now.

Meanwhile, JLo is scheduled as both the musical guest and the host of Saturday Night Live next
weekend. But now she has no record and no movie to promote. Hmm.

"if you had my love" was such a jam for me when i was a kid -- such an incredible song

jizzchin (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 6 March 2010 08:56 (fifteen years ago)

the monochromatic house that the music video is set in is such an late 90s/early 2000s idea of what "modern" looks like -- i want to live in it -- also it has "INTERNET TV"

none of these HOUSE + R&B joints of recent vintage are even 10% as good as "waiting for tonight"

"Girls" is awful. "Feelin' So Good" should have gotten more votes.
