POXV: Fountains of Wayne

In my opinion, the best of Fountains of Wayne's songs fit among the best rock music of the past couple decades. Problem is, they seem very hit-or-miss. What are your favorite 15 songs?

I am conflicted about Radiation Vibe and Sink to the Bottom. Both are pretty good, but somehow I feel disinclined from adding them to my FoW playlist.

Yeah -- I love them, but that's a weirdly high number of songs to pick as my favorite.

At any rate, Traffic and Weather is being unfairly excluded here. If we're going as high as 15, "Michael and Heather at the Baggage Claim," "Strapped for Cash" and "Yolanda Hayes" deserve some love.

I can't do this in order but I'll name 15 that come to mind.

1. Radiation Vibe (the song that made me love them and still a sentimental favorite.)
2. Barbara H (the one that's in my head most often)
3. Mexican Wine
4. Bright Future in Sales (My favorite 1-2 album starter since "Begin The Begin"/"These Days")
5. Red Dragon Tattoo (I take it back, this one's in my head most often)
6. Leave the Biker (by far the best of the "funny songs")
7. Hat and Feet
8. Sink to the Bottom
9. Joe Rey (the best of the "mysterious song about some dude we know" songs)
10. Baby One More Time (I hate arch ironic covers yet I love this, more power to FoW)
11. Stacy's Mom (I resisted this, but it is pretty great, after all)
12. Yolanda Hayes
13. It Must Be Summer
14. Lost in Space
15. Prom Theme

Doing 15 seemed crazy but was actually an interesting excercise -- made me realize how much, in the end, it's all about the first two records for me.

This POX should be POX: Adam Schlesinger instead of FoW. That way I could include "That Thing You Do" and a good chunk of the Ivy tracks.

Otherwise, "Valley Of Malls" and "Utopia Parkway"

You guys totally like the slow ones better than I do!

I don't think they do "rawk" very well in general. most of those songs, like "lost in space", sound so generic to me.

good god, dar williams has covered "troubled times" on her latest album.

You know, I really kind of slept on "Radiation Vibe" when it was on the radio, but thanks to this thread I am listening to it all the time. "Bay-by, baby baby..."
