Tom, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Please do join in - especially if you're a regular here, but everyone who's vaguely pop-sympathetic is welcome!

Tom, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm thrilled that the common people can contribute, but that list is missing something... it seems a little empty... do you see where I'm going with this? (KIDS!)

fritz, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(though a massive write-in vote is inevitable and the ommission will work itself out)

fritz, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

do you see where I'm going with this?

Er, no.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

just a dumb joke about the absence of "without me" by eminem, which I'm betting would rate pretty highly.

fritz, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Outside the release date boundaries, Fritz! Otherwise it would have gone in. It'll be in next time.

Tom, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's definitely the best song I hear coming out of cars these days, my only barometer these days. what exactly does he say about Moby?

fritz, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He says Moby is a twat. (NOTE: This is a paraphrase, I can't remember exactly what he says.)

Dan Perry, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Might as well be saying that. So whoever did produce the damn thing, anyway?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

he calls him an old faggot and sez "No one listens to techno anymore." As Nate Patrin pointed out on his blog, Dre is a year older than Moby and Em is from, uh, Detroit, so draw yr own conclusions

M Matos, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

he calls him a faggot? Of all the things to call Moby that's got to be the least interesting. I expected something better.

fritz, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

also, the irony of the beat being cribbed directly from homework-era daft punk is obviously lost on em.

jess, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We're talking Eminem here, master of the Overrated Putdown.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Eminem is slightly smarter than a turnip, but some of his songs are fun to dance to.

Dan Perry, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I'll go with that.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He actually says "Moby got stung by Obi", a reference to Moby being dumped by Star Wars actress Natalie Portman.

Nick, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You know what? That's what I thought. But doesn't he say "No-one listens to techno or disco"?

DavidM, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom, are you gonna put all the songs online?

I've seen three songs I will give 10 to. And, it'll be fun disagreeing with everyone about Basement Jaxx again!

jel --, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i will give everything 10 as always: eminem gets 12 for being hard

mark s, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He does say "Nobody listens to techno" but I really doubt he doesn't notice that his beat is cribbed from the electronic world. The song isn't exactly chock full of good insults, it's like the lyrics are a parody of an Eminem song, and I kind of think that's the point.

Ally, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The "Without Me" clip is better criticism. There's a scene where Moby is acting like a total ponce at a yoga class. It's an obvious hit, yeah, but what's the point of being subtle when your target is Moby?

Tim, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My write away vote will be for : R Kelly "the worlds greatest" as I can't get it out of my head, and start singing it at work and stuff.

jel --, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why oh why do people assume Eminem has the intelligence to perform something that's a parody of his own work, when, let's be honest, he seems to possess the sort of mind that would have seen him represent his football team at high school.

Oh, and "Freak Like Me" will win.

Judd Nelson, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

erm we listen to him judd

mark s, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We do?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you weren't included in judd's "we" in the first place ned, seeing as you think em is a moron

also you never listen to words

also nor do i usually, but in em's case i am proud and delighted to make an exception

mark s, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

seeing as you think em is a moron

I think he thinks he's a lot cleverer than he thinks he is -- mind you, the same could be said about me. ;-)

also you never listen to words

Two years back, much of the rhetoric surrounding him (not here, I should note, or at least I don't recall it being a particular talking point) in his defense tended to revolve around his alleged talents with words, so it was one of those issues that got a little more foregrounded with me than it would with most musicians. I didn't buy that argument then and I don't buy it now.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Eminem probably would have gotten his ass kicked by the football team in my high school when I was there. Something like 25% of them were in the honors program and would have been really embarrassed by him.

Dan Perry, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The defense wasn't for his words but for his flow. Personally what he's talking about doesn't do anything for me usually, but his flow can be pretty incredible at times.

Jordan, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The defense wasn't for his words but for his flow.

Not all the time, though, Jordan. It would be more accurate to say that both got talked about, though not necessarily in equal measure.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey! I heard people are having trouble finding places to stay in Detroit a couple weekends from now. Like there's gonna be a bunch of people there? They must be visiting to see Eddie Money -- people come from around the world to see him do "Shakin'". I also heard someone from the area has rented the quadrophonic sound system from an old Pink Floyd tour. Is Roger Waters planning a performance of The Wall?

Andy K, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm. It's late, and my arguments will probably be even shittier than ever, but...

Someone please explain the Eminem greatness tag. OK, I don't like him, that's by the by, but I can't see how anyone can claim that he has some sort of valid claim to greatness with either a flow or lyrics. His flow... it's weak. Maybe I look for different things in hip hop, maybe I listen to too much hip hop, or maybe I'm a pussy who likes Jurassic 5 and Black Eyed Peas, I dunno. He just sounds permanently like they guy next to you at the urinal. Except camper.

And as for lyrical genius... meh. "My thoughts are deeper than a jeeper with four guys in". Yeah, cheers Em. Nice original metaphor there.

And I meant association football, not shoulder pad football.

I'm going to go off and fall asleep in front of Premiership Parliament.

Tom, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My guess is Eminem has very little to do with his backing tracks; there's a delicious irony that everyone's favorite homophobe's career was kick started by a Labi Siffre sample.

J Blount, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah but there's an even more "delicious" listener-ensnaring complexity if em IS responsible for his back tracks

mark s, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He's subverting his subversion?

J Blount, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no we're subverting OURS!!

(i mean: since choosing how much he's onto his own game is up to us, somewhat, why not choose the version of the situation that makes things hard and therefore interesting for us, instead of HURRAH WE ARE SMART AND HUMANE THROWING ROCKS AT THE BOGEYMAN?)

mark s, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think just a decent listen to the lyrics of "Without Me" versus 99% of his other songs gives a good idea of where his head is at. I don't like Eminem much, but I don't like the idea that people think he's a complete moron - he's not as smart as HE thinks he is, but he's definitely smarter than YOU think he is. That's the bottom line, IMO.

(universal you, etc. blah blah fucking blah)

I'd also like to think Eminem has SOME say in his backing tracks - I doubt many artists are purely the creation of their producer, even the most fabricated ones.

Ally, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think he's a complete moron, and I'm not sure how many people actually do - every review you read of the guy notes how smart and canny the guy is. The question is just how provocative his provocations are - does anyone think the majority of his fans are actually going to be offended by his fagbashing or misogyny; as he himself puts it he just says what "we're all thinking" (you know - "I hate gays/women or, sorry, gays/bitches). This I wouldn't mind as much if he were even slightly willing to take on blacks or other rappers with the same glee he takes on gays or N'Sync. But then again that might be too controversial. The guy couldn't hold Sam Kinison's or Luis Bunuel's jock.

J Blount, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And I very much doubt he's aware of Labi Siffre persuasion.

J Blount, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually I think he has beef with Jermaine Dupri.
Eminem vs. L'il Bow Wow: I would pay out the nose to see THAT beef.

Nate Patrin, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Then Snoop could side with Li'l Bow Wow, causing another rift between him and Dre.

J Blount, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Eminem's lyrics are much more clever and interesting than he is himself, and I think much of the richness of meaning in his best numbers* might be lost on him = Eminem is even cleverer than he thinks he is.

*e.g. the line "I am whatever you say I am" considered as the great Postmodernist statement of the non-existence of any privileged discourses, simultaneously evoking Jesus and Popeye in an attempt to break down the lines between truth and fiction, religion and pop iconography, high and low culture. You could write a thesis on that one line!

Martin Skidmore, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"evoking Jesus and Popeye" I believe the phrase goes "What happened when Jesus went to Mount Olive?"

Judd Nelson, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You could write a thesis on that one line!

Give it twenty years. It's usually how long it takes.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't like the idea that people think he's a complete moron - he's not as smart as HE thinks he is, but he's definitely smarter than YOU think he is.

I don't know about that. I mean, he's not the dumbest person in the pop charts right now ('NSync has some extraordinary mental midgets; ever listen to Lance give an interview?) and I do give him props when he writes something good ("Guilty Conscience", "Stan", "The Way I Am", "Without Me"), but that doesn't mean he has any sense.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"it's like the lyrics are a parody of an Eminem song"

Yeah, it's like a Wierd Al Yankovich spoof song. [Only funnier obv.]
Saying that, I do quite like it, though some of the rhymes are awful: "They all want to discuss me / that must mean I'm dis-gust- ing". Dear me.

DavidM, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Common sense /= intelligence.

Anyhow, one of my big problems with Eminem's so called controversialness is the fact that he takes on gays and women and certain minorities with such vigor, with the excuse that it's all just fun and games, but very conciously avoids any attacks on blacks or other rappers. If his game is everyone is a target, why is he so very careful on that one? I mean, the answer is obvious, but it makes it well harder to buy his "This isn't me, it's the way it is" schtick.

Ally, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Common sense /= intelligence.

I absolutely disagree and I don't care what the rest of the world says. Common sense damn well should be factored into an assessment of a person's intelligence.

I do agree that his "controversial" stances, regardless of whether they're his actual opinions or not, are so mixed and contradictory that they come across as cynical marketing ploys divested of any sense of personal responsibilty. I'm in a rather odd position where I respect a good portion of Eminem's music in how it's constructed and in some of the ways that particular sentiments are expressed, but I have absolutely no respect for Em himself. Actually, I kind of think he's a punk who got lucky.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Common sense isn't on any IQ test I've ever seen, Dan. That's kind of my point. I think Eminem IS an intelligent person. He's literate and decently well spoken, and can turn a good phrase. He would do well on the verbal SATs ;) My point is, you can be a book-moron who isn't well spoken and have enough common sense to not pistol whip your wife, and you can be a functional genius who doesn't even have enough common sense to function within society. It's unfair to claim someone as unblinkingly stupid because they lack the common sense half of the equation.

Incidentally, I'm not sure how much of Em's troubles are due to "no common sense" versus "fucked up person"...

Might I remind everyone I can't stand Eminem by and large? Why am I defending him against people who used to defend him to me? :)

Ally, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was rather wondering. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two weeks pass...
Getting back to the focus group - I'm ashamed to say I have not heard at least 9 of the records (and another one only once quite a while ago). Is it still worth sending in a ballot? Are the votes averaged in a way that takes account of "never heard (of) it"s?

Alternatively, is there a place one can easily download all the songs from? (NB - not audiogalaxy type places)

Jeff W, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*cough* Hello?

Jeff W, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi - sorry Jeff.

To my knowledge there isn't a specific download place. Just answer for the songs you know - blanks dont affect the averages. Only missing 9 is fairly good going I think.

Tom, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, guess I missed this one this time around. Oh well. Unless there's been an extension on this or something, since it's been pretty quiet around these parts. (Tom, you never answer your damn email. *sob*)

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i think this is still open isn't it? i was going to do it this week
(tom is rub w.email => this is SCIENCE FACT)

mark s, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

On 4 June, Tom said on NYLPM "you have only got a couple of weeks left..." so maybe it's not too late.

Jeff W, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm unlikely to start work on it until the weekend so yes it's still open! Incidentally sorry to people who waited in case of a second live focus group - I wanted to do one but the available days filled up desperately quickly with other stuff.

Tom, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

AYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYYAYAYAYAY!

Daver, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh! cool it's not too late! i'll try and do something by friday.

jel --, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah. Good. Because, you see, MY COMPUTER CRASHED AND I LOST EVERYTHING I DID IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS, INCLUDING MANY GREAT SIMS GAMES, E- MAIL, KICK-ASS PICTURES OF HALF-NAKED FAT MEN, SOME RECENT ITERATIONS OF THE ILx ARCHIVE (I have a month-old one on CD, though), AND MY BALLOT. Sniff, sigh.
