I like the two songs from this he's posted on his myspace. The last album has grown on me in the past few months.

Professor Respect, Saturday, 13 September 2008 04:54 (seventeen years ago)

He's got about seven songs on MySpace, none of them much cop really. It's sounding better than Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living, but not by much. I hate happy-clappy choirs on pop songs.

DavidM, Saturday, 13 September 2008 06:46 (seventeen years ago)

this has leaked, not really interested though.

Bee OK, Saturday, 13 September 2008 06:51 (seventeen years ago)

Think I heard this yesterday and it grabbed me .

Contrived - but pretty- 'strings'

Fer Ark, Saturday, 13 September 2008 07:53 (seventeen years ago)

I like the first album alright, love the second, haven't listened to the third more than once. And I'm looking forward to this a lot. Seems like 2008 has been a very weak year for hip-hop.

ilxor, Sunday, 14 September 2008 05:03 (seventeen years ago)

well you won't find any of that on here

Aare-Reuss Böögg (blueski), Sunday, 14 September 2008 09:32 (seventeen years ago)

I hate albumtitles that try to make a headstart at the press.

Roy, Sunday, 14 September 2008 10:38 (seventeen years ago)

Is this the album with the Muse collab on it? Or is that the next Muse one? Really wanna hear that in a kinda nu-"Radio Song" way.

worst post ever

Worst reply ever. Kiss my ass, lex.

ilxor, Sunday, 14 September 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

Can't muster the slightest bit of enthusiasm for this.

chap, Sunday, 14 September 2008 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

i wasn't that excited for it but this thread has got me totally stoked!

s1ocki, Sunday, 14 September 2008 18:00 (seventeen years ago)

Out of curiosity, what is it about this short, insubstantial thread that has you totally stoked?

ilxor, Sunday, 14 September 2008 19:27 (seventeen years ago)

the energy

s1ocki, Sunday, 14 September 2008 19:29 (seventeen years ago)

how do u think this will compare to Nas' "Untitled"?

Patrick Leahy, (D)-VT (deej), Sunday, 14 September 2008 19:44 (seventeen years ago)

both will bring hip hop to a higher level this year.

s1ocki, Sunday, 14 September 2008 19:53 (seventeen years ago)

That shouldn't be too difficult a task. There are maybe three hip-hop albums out this year that are passable, and nothing has blown me away. Compare this to 2007 and it's ridiculous. There was a lot of great hip-hop last year. In 2008... not so much.

ilxor, Sunday, 14 September 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

fascinating. what rap albums have u heard this year?

I hear Skinner was originally gonna call this album "Limey" until the censors got to him.

Carrie Bradshaw Layfield (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Sunday, 14 September 2008 21:24 (seventeen years ago)

I like the songs on his myspace page esp. "the escapist." None of them sound like the annoying tracks on the last album. However i kind of wish this was his "dark Berlin-influenced" (lou reed or minimal techno?)album that is supposed to be next.

Professor Respect, Sunday, 14 September 2008 23:29 (seventeen years ago)

Previews sound good to me, but I'm horribly biased when it comes to Mike Skinner, and thus will be buying this the second it becomes available in Canuckistan.

Tantrum The Cat, Sunday, 14 September 2008 23:38 (seventeen years ago)

Mike Skinner is a cranky buttmeister but I love that cheeky monkey (remember cheeky monkey from Robin's House on BBC3?ROFL!!!)

Nick WATTS, Monday, 15 September 2008 01:43 (seventeen years ago)

fascinating. what rap albums have u heard this year?

I can think of about half a dozen that I expected to be way better than they actually are. But I won't name names here. Except for Lil Wayne, who is far too overrated and needs to be called out on it.

ilxor, Monday, 15 September 2008 04:24 (seventeen years ago)

someone really needs to sit that guy down and tell him to stop being so highly rated.

s1ocki, Monday, 15 September 2008 05:12 (seventeen years ago)

this is kind of lovely.

sean gramophone, Monday, 15 September 2008 16:02 (seventeen years ago)

Perhaps. I do like the "Lollipop" single a ton, though.

ilxor, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 01:45 (seventeen years ago)

That South Bank Show last night was pretty useless in trying to sell the new album.

Lots of Rough Guide to Prague camerawork, Petridish windbaggism, pointless gospel choirs and camera as medallion tracking shots, virtually nothing about what the album was like.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 22 September 2008 11:25 (seventeen years ago)

Is the cover taken somewhere in Iceland? Because that's got to be a plus.

three weeks pass...

he had a good run there

omar little, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 17:39 (seventeen years ago)

The samples on iTunes make this sound pretty wretched.

chap, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 17:51 (seventeen years ago)

I thought the last one was pretty wretched too, this at least as a song or two worth hearing again. Still, it is a shame to realize that it wasn't just a mis-step the last time around.

Some golden moments in here, but his patchiest album by far, and I even liked "The Hardest Way..." all the way through.

Tantrum The Cat, Monday, 1 December 2008 05:00 (sixteen years ago)

This might genuinely be the most indifferent thread ever for a former ILM favourite.

Matt DC, Monday, 1 December 2008 12:27 (sixteen years ago)

^^^this is a 10/10 post though

Peter "One Dart" Manley (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Monday, 1 December 2008 12:41 (sixteen years ago)

Skinner has said that the fifth record would be similar to Lou Reed's Berlin.

"The final Streets album (the fifth one) will be dark and futuristic. This could not be further from the album you're about to hear, but it's what is on my mind at the moment. I feel inspired by the synthesizer exhibition we just visited in Graz after the gig we just did."

Is anyone prepared to offer a revised takeon this? FWIW I haven't heard it, but I found myself missing the first two records and wanting some more.

Flowers By Pete (admrl), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 00:22 (fifteen years ago)

I really like The Escapist. That plucked string motif is so pretty.
