This is a tough one. I'd have to come down on the Motorhead side, because, in the end, the one thing they do perfectly over and over trumps Hawkwind's career of cosmic exploration.
― Soukesian, Saturday, 13 September 2008 18:39 (seventeen years ago)
Agreed, I think.

But still . . "Space Ritual". It's like the NHS or the BBC. We take it for granted, and yet . .
― Soukesian, Saturday, 13 September 2008 18:55 (seventeen years ago)
hawkwind. their career of cosmic exploration trumps the one thing motorhead does over and over again
― kamerad, Saturday, 13 September 2008 19:03 (seventeen years ago)
Fair point.
― Soukesian, Saturday, 13 September 2008 19:03 (seventeen years ago)
Hawkwind because I like the desolate void of space more than the desolate void of Lemmy's soul.

Fucking hell this is a toughie. I'm erring on the side of Motorhead, although I don't really want to live in a world without either of them.

Space Ritual is fucking godlike, but no other Hawkwind album comes close to it, whereas Motörhead have four or five brain-crushingly great songs on every one of their albums, and sometimes more. Plus, they're as good now as they've ever been, possibly better (their last three albums have been amazing), and no rational person would call whatever version of Hawkwind exists these days anything but a withered relic.
― unperson, Saturday, 13 September 2008 19:30 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, the latest Motorhead is better than most of their 90s albums. And almost certainly better than anything Hawkwind have done since er I guess 1980 or so. Although every album Hawkwind did up til about 76 is super great.
― I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 13 September 2008 19:36 (seventeen years ago)
Doesn't this basically come down to Hawkwind with Lemmy being as good as Motorhead, with any other line up of Hawkwind being not as good as Motorhead?
― snoball, Saturday, 13 September 2008 19:36 (seventeen years ago)
Pretty much, yeah.
― unperson, Saturday, 13 September 2008 19:37 (seventeen years ago)
except "as good as" is "better than"

a hawkwind 'space ritual' tshirt is just as cool as a 'motorhead england' tshirt.
― Chelvis, Saturday, 13 September 2008 19:47 (seventeen years ago)
except "just as cool as" is "cooler than"
― omar little, Saturday, 13 September 2008 20:00 (seventeen years ago)
yeah definitely. I kind of hate Motorhead England t-shirts. Any other Motorhead t-shirt is fine tho
― I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 13 September 2008 20:25 (seventeen years ago)
You guys are insane. Motorhead are good, but Hawkwind are just GREAT times 1000000000000000.
― Our Friend The Atom (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 13 September 2008 20:28 (seventeen years ago)

t/s: lightspeed down the black hole vs driving 150 mph at night, wearing shades
― moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 13 September 2008 22:33 (seventeen years ago)
both mean the world to me and i'd probably have plumped for hawkwind if it hadn't been for the fact i saw them three weeks ago and they were beyond dreadful. i ended up heckling.
― stirmonster, Saturday, 13 September 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)
Hey stirmonster - nice to meet you at C&A's wedding.
― Keith, Saturday, 13 September 2008 23:21 (seventeen years ago)
FWIW I know nothing about Hawkwind, but it seems clear that I should. In the 80s, Motorhead were the only 'heavy metal' band I liked, because they clearly weren't heavy metal. Can't really decide. Silver Machine is probably all I know.
― Keith, Saturday, 13 September 2008 23:27 (seventeen years ago)
I'm glad you posted that stirmonster cos I had been thinking about seeing Hawkwind just in case they were still good!
― I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 14 September 2008 00:45 (seventeen years ago)
HORKWIND
they both could've stopped at some point, though.
