Osymyso - Intro Introspection

It's this sorta sound-collage sort of thing, maybe the bootleg to end all bootlegs, consisting of 12+ minutes of well-known song intros (first note of "Wild Thing", "First I was afraid, I was petrified...", the "Theme From Shaft" wah-wah) all sorta spliced together in this weird megamix. At one point it fuses the guitar riff from "Smells Like Teen Spirit" to the bassline of "Stayin' Alive", and it sounds funky as hell. Damn. Damn. Damn.

As mentioned here.

I've heard a million jokes made at it's expense (falling in three categories 1) Jive Bunny 2) Name that Tune 3) Stars on 45), but I still think it's pretty brilliant and a lot of fun. God only knows how many versions of it exist now but the earliest and I think shortest version is still the best. A few parts don't work, but most do, incredibly. The fifth time I listened to it I was still hearing new things. Favorite moments: "Wannabe" merging into "The Message", and "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)", "Song 2", "You Really Got Me", and "Sweet Child O' Mine" melting together in one glorious clusterfuck. Cheap thrills galore.

Huge "oh damn" moment: "Lust For Life" + "My Generation".
I can't get over this song. It's seriously knocking me on my ass. It's hilarious 'cause the MP3 I have of it is from some UK radio show and it includes the DJs' reactions. "I'm not well."

Nate Patrin, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a huge file but if you can find Soulwax's "Hang the DJ" set from last Christmas (Radio One I think) it's definitely worth checking out.

J Blount, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It is truly great, I got it from Boom Selection. Personal favourite has to be the "Pretty Fly For A White Guy"/"Barbie Girl"/"Firestarter"/"Anarchy In The UK" bit.

Judd Nelson, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

he's working on a long version, if it's not out already. twice the length or something

michael, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I heard it once and found it pretty unlistenable, partly because you never get the gratification of hearing songs you love actually kick in and partly because, by definition, it's kind of formless.

Bootlegs you all must own:
Nirvana v Destiny's Child
Strokes v Christina.

The slashdot link on the wonderful http://www.base58.com/booms/ co- incidentally leads to both the above.

dan, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nah, the best bootlegs IMO are Girls On Top 'I Wanna Dance With Numbers', the Destiny's Child and 10cc 'Dreadlock Holiday' one, and the 'Disco Inferno' and Nelly(?) one. those guitar-y ones are tedious, although maybe it's cos i don't like the original tracks

michael, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

guy at the recordshop there's one record called "best bootlegs in the world". anyone know where i can get it?

Nathalie, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wouldn't bother getting it if I were you Nath. It's a badly put together compilation of mp3s nabbed from Boom Selection. Much cheaper to pull them off the site yourself.

RickyT, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ricky T is right, Nath ... but of course I have it becuz I am a LOSER :). I saw a copy in Caroline Records in BXL last week if you really want a copy.

Full details here, anyway.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jeff, yeah, I would very much like it! Can you get it for me?

nathalie, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is why it's great: listening to it the other day I couldn't remember if "People try to put us down" was a line from the Monkees or the Pistols.

Eric Idle singing "Some things in life are bad..." over Michael Jackson's "Bad" is pretty good too.

r copping, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The 7-minute version is a terrific record. The 12-minute version suffers a bit because he succumbs to the temptation to put in more annoying do-you-see? style jokes i.e. the Monty Python and Aqua bits.

Tom, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nate, the uk radio show is xfm's remix (fridays 9-11) and it's james hyman who's saying 'you're not well'.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The best bootleg ever is Dsico's "Passin' It Up", which mixes the Pharcyde and the Violent Femmes, btw.

Judd Nelson, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

while we're at it, my fave moments are the dee-lite/eurythmics/duran mash, and the much more crass but still fun inxs/dexys

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

seven months pass...
Anyone have a complete list of the intros used in the full-length version?

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 16 December 2002 21:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm...yes....that Black Rebel Motorcycle thing that sounded like "Spirit In The Sky" was pretty fucking appalling an' all.

Venga, Monday, 16 December 2002 23:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Shit, wrong thread. Ahem.

Venga, Monday, 16 December 2002 23:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Tep, check out http://www.base58.com/bsx/osymyso.html

its not quite accurate, in fact i need to update it but it gives you almost everything

stevem (blueski), Monday, 16 December 2002 23:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I love the track (the first listen was easily the giddiest). But then again, I did listen to Jive Bunny a lot as a kid.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 16 December 2002 23:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I recently posted my version of the sample list here, which is very close to the Boom Selection list but with a couple notable changes (i.e., they missed one very important and obvious one). Plus a bunch of other stats 'cause I was really bored one night.

s woods, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 00:05 (twenty-three years ago)

the funny thing is that Chuck Berry DID used to be in there but the sneaky S Club seem to have pushed him out...this will be corrected....any week now

and sorry Scott but I have it on good word from Mr Osymyso himself that it was Kowkube/Cowcube and NOT The Monkees...for gawd's sake you only have to listen to the track 'If It Aint Country It Aint Music' for this one to be decided (however, about 68 people did write to say they thought it was 'I'm A Believer')

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 00:14 (twenty-three years ago)

That's funny--I kept the S Club sample listing in there despite not being able to hear it at all. I just assumed my ears were old or useless. (I also have the same issue with Men at Work, which I simply fail to hear.)

That's fine, I'll take your word on Cowcube, though a) I don't think the distinction is all that obvious (I downloaded Cowcube on Boom Selection's recommendation, and both songs sound pretty much identical--though maybe I have to listen back to back, possibly they're in a different key); and b) (more crucially) it strikes me as kinda bizarre (maybe even disappointing) that it's not the Monkees and instead is some very obscure (to my North American ears anyhow) entity known as Cowcube. It just seems out of place given what the rest of the samples in the song are ("I'm a Believer" being totally a standard of this sort--i.e., perfect wedding fodder). Thus, I'll stick to my incorrect history and keep the Monkees listed--because, well, I'm a believer.

Anyway, thanks for the info, I appreciate it.

s woods, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 00:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll second the I'm A Believer deal. That's what I hear too. Plus I've never heard Cowcube.

I heard both Duran Duran's "Is There Something I Should Know" and Boney M's "Rivers Of Babylon" AFTER I heard Intro Introspection. There's always something fun about hearing something after hearing a reference earlier.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 00:32 (twenty-three years ago)

well you should at least hear the Cowcube track before deciding its The Monkees...the Cowcube intro is IDENTICAL to what you hear in 'Intro Inspection' - to my ears it never really sounded that much like 'I'm A Believer' - to have used that and make it sound like it sounds in 'Intro Inspection' wouldve taken some sort of twiddling as the guitar sounds a bit reversed - either way its not The Monkees intro as standard, pure aural and sonic fact

i do agree that its an odd choice tho, and that it wouldve perhaps made more sense to use The Monkees, perhaps Osymyso does not consider them THAT similar either

the big piano/organ swirl just before the Hollies comes in is from S C lub 7's 'Bring It All Back' - i had this assured to me by Matt DC and it was later admitted by Osymyso again

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 11:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Just a couple of quickies, I had a listen to it whilst looking at your list and isn't there the following in it:

Enya ‘Orinoco Flow’ stab after Guns’n’Roses

Freakpower 'Turn on, Tune In, Cop Out' bassline (or wahatever it sampled) during the Heaven 17, Little Fluffy Clouds bit.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 00:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Was I the first person to actually spot S Club in there? I don't remember anyone having mentioned it beforehand... *grin*

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 10:27 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
is there a complete list of samples used somewhere?
