Muscoviet Mosquito

Mr Dorbius (Curt1s Stephens), Sunday, 14 September 2008 06:09 (seventeen years ago)

damn - what a choice...

For me it's got to be either of the two DCD tracks, or Throwing Muses or Wolfgang Press..

I even like the Cocteau Twins track and they usually annoy the shit out of me!

Ok - decision time..

Throwing Muses - Fish

Jack Battery-Pack, Sunday, 14 September 2008 06:51 (seventeen years ago)

no motion

give me some peppermint freddo (electricsound), Sunday, 14 September 2008 10:07 (seventeen years ago)

Oh god, Tough choice. As much as I love that Throwing Muses track, I'm going to have to go with "FWONTIERS!!!! FWONTIERS!!!" for Lisa Gerrard's utterly otherworldly lisp. I'm a sucker for a hammer dulcimer.

The Lesser of Two Weevils (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 14 September 2008 12:06 (seventeen years ago)

"acid, bitter and sad" >>> everything else in the world, ever.

grimly fiendish, Sunday, 14 September 2008 12:25 (seventeen years ago)

Funny, I never liked this record, I listened to it back when it was very difficult to get your hand on 4AD material where I lived and to this day it sounds wonky and weird to me, despite all the talent involved. Dated, too.

Vision, Sunday, 14 September 2008 12:30 (seventeen years ago)

dcd or muses, not sure

akm, Sunday, 14 September 2008 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

Colourbox, anyone?

ilxor, Sunday, 14 September 2008 15:53 (seventeen years ago)

colourbox are an awesome band, yeh. but this is one of those albums where i always felt one track eclipsed everything else.

i'm completely and utterly alone here, though, i'm guessing?

grimly fiendish, Sunday, 14 September 2008 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

I think everyone feels like one track eclipses the rest. That's the nature of compilations like this. It's just a question of which track... thus, the poll.

ilxor, Sunday, 14 September 2008 16:33 (seventeen years ago)

I'm probably going to vote for Dif Juz but I'll think it over for 24 hours or so.

ilxor, Sunday, 14 September 2008 16:34 (seventeen years ago)

i meant: i'm alone in choosing the track i have, yeh?

grimly fiendish, Sunday, 14 September 2008 16:36 (seventeen years ago)

Wait for the poll results, dude!

The Lesser of Two Weevils (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 14 September 2008 16:37 (seventeen years ago)

"Fish" for me, though I've always liked the earlier version that showed up on a split flexi (1985, I think--it came with the BOB fanzine?). A little more direct, less produced, and with fewer parts and sounds worked in. Still, 98% the same thing--it's a great song either way.

Michael Train, Sunday, 14 September 2008 17:10 (seventeen years ago)

Great compilation, but "Crushed" is one of Cocteau Twins' best songs. "Frontier" is second.

LeRooLeRoo, Sunday, 14 September 2008 21:32 (seventeen years ago)

then: hot doggie

now: no motion

i sold my deluxe limited edition vinyl of this recently on ebay but i didn't get much for it.

jed_, Sunday, 14 September 2008 21:40 (seventeen years ago)

well, i got £35 i think.

jed_, Sunday, 14 September 2008 21:40 (seventeen years ago)

not that there's any wrong answer here, but "No Motion" or "Crushed" does seem like the rightest. looks like another coin-toss.

Mr. Hal Jam, Sunday, 14 September 2008 21:44 (seventeen years ago)

Fish

Throwing Muses - Fish

I am Barack and I need your vote (SeekAltRoute), Monday, 15 September 2008 03:39 (seventeen years ago)

Alright, I'll bite on "No Motion," finally.

ilxor, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 02:51 (seventeen years ago)

So many great songs here but "No Motion" is something really special and transcendent. "Acid, Bitter and Sad" is a distant second and sometimes my favorite This Mortal Coil track. "Muscoviet Mosquito" is definitely my favorite Xymox.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 22:09 (seventeen years ago)

i have this on cassette somewhere, Clan of Xymox wins today.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 22:45 (seventeen years ago)

1-10

Dif Juz - No Motion
Colourbox - Hot Doggie
Throwing Muses- Fish
The Wolfgang Press - Cut the Tree
This Mortal Coil - Acid, Bitter and Sad
Dead Can Dance - The Protagonist
Cocteau Twins - Crushed
Dead Can Dance - Frontier
Clan of Xymox - Muscoviet Mosquito

jed_, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

i used to have this on vhs o_O

jed_, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

Still have my VHS, wondering if they'll ever do a DVD or Blu-Ray.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 23:02 (seventeen years ago)

lol didn't know I was going so deeply against the grain here. "No Motion" is my other fav from this album though. The rest I enjoy well enough but Xymox & Dif Juz are the only two that are memorable to me.

Mr Dubious (Curt1s Stephens), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 23:34 (seventeen years ago)

Bimble is thinking of giving out cold hard cash for Dif Juz votes. I think that Wolfgang Press song doesn't get enough love, though.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 00:47 (seventeen years ago)

Dif Juz's "No Motion" was always my favourite when this album came out, both the song and it's clip (and it was what got me to chase up the rest of their sadly very small collection). I'd vote Fish but I prefer the rough, rather odd demo on the video.
Suprisingly for me, the Cocteaus song on here isnt really a fave.

So hm. Hard. I'm going for Dif Juz, but "The Protagonist" and "Muscoviwt Musquito" are close seconds.

I am kicking myself I never bought the wooden box that came with the album, a VHS of all clips, and assorted art gumf back in the day. It seemed so expensive (it was 100's of $).

Trayce, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 01:00 (seventeen years ago)

Couldn't agree more, Trayce!!! I knew a guy at the time it came out who was really crazy about that song, but to me it was like this odd, once-in-a-lifetime case of the Cocteaus not quite blowing my mind.

I never bought the wooden box either, honey. Tragic in this day and age to admit it. But yeah.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 01:52 (seventeen years ago)

Hey at least I bought the original Cocteaus single box though :)

Trayce, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 01:56 (seventeen years ago)

of course thee 4ad box to have is the liliput set

King Boy Patinka (electricsound), Wednesday, 17 September 2008 02:00 (seventeen years ago)

I knew a guy at the time it came out who was really crazy about that song

Maybe that was me! ;-) I always assumed every Cocteau fan loved it as well. To me it sounds like it could have been on Love's Easy Tears, which is my favorite EP of theirs.

Never liked "Muscoviet Mosquito" as much as the rest of Clan Of Xymox's output though.

LeRooLeRoo, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 02:41 (seventeen years ago)

I agree with this. I'm a huge Cocteaus fan, which means they have so many high points that this is not too exciting in comparison. On the other hands, the guys with small catalogs such as Dif Juz and Colourbox have a stronger showing here... relatively speaking, that is.

ilxor, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 03:30 (seventeen years ago)

Dif Juz had so much potential. They could have been like Talk Talk. I was so bummed they stopped after Extractions.

Trayce, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 03:42 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Saturday, 20 September 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

At first, I was really fucking pissed that I missed this poll, but then I got a perspective and realised how impossible it would have been to pick a best track on such an amazing compilation, so I thought long and hard about how much I loved this era of 4AD in general and how, really, that Colourbox song just had to be a template for the Avalanches Since I Left You, right?

Lostandfound, Sunday, 21 September 2008 06:40 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, it's been a template for a ton of great music over the next two decades.

ilxor, Sunday, 21 September 2008 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah but I mean...why should Throwing Muses trump Dif Juz? Don't get me wrong, I adore Throwing Muses, but...why?

This kind of shit will probably keep me awake at night. Thanks, gothtards.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Sunday, 21 September 2008 17:24 (seventeen years ago)

I imagine a lot of ppl who arent remotely "that era" 4ad fans wd only like either Colorbox or TMs of this comp's contents. Thus.

Trayce, Monday, 22 September 2008 00:56 (seventeen years ago)

That Throwing Muses song should win, it's probably their best song and maybe the best song released by 4AD. It's got everything and whatever one might argue it's missing is just another thing that it's got.

f. hazel, Monday, 22 September 2008 07:42 (seventeen years ago)

four months pass...

I admit I forgot how good a song "Fish" was. I'm surprised to find it on my iPod, really, it's from In A Doghouse, though, so I think it's a different version than the video/compilation.

Coffee Table LP's Never Breathe! (Bimble), Saturday, 21 February 2009 02:37 (sixteen years ago)

nine years pass...

Just picked up a nice used copy of this comp. It's amazing what a consistent sound 4AD was able to curate back in the day. With the exception of Colourbox and maybe the Throwing Muses track, everything else here sounds entirely of a piece.
(though i'm casting a belated vote for the cocteau twins track)

This must have been absolute catnip for the goths back in '87.
