"Fake dub"

List songs that are "fake" dub here - think indie bands dropping in a dub bassline or getting a dub remix, a la Lazarus, Kowalski, Pele by Long Fin Killie, etc.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 15:48 (seventeen years ago)

heheh "fake dub"

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

Tis for an iTunes playlist.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 15:53 (seventeen years ago)

XTC "Go 2"

Not sure what you mean exactly tho

Tom D (Tom D.), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 15:56 (seventeen years ago)

"wild dub" by generation x (which is awesome btw)

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

And I mean "Go +" not "Go 2" of course

Tom D (Tom D.), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

"Go +" = awesome too

Tom D (Tom D.), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

Does a Cheap Trick count?

Ack! (Ioannis), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

most of this album, "animal now" by Ruts D.C. (which is also awesome)

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

i guess these aren't "indie bands" though they are punk/new wave

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)

yeah punk/new wave is almost too easy

(on that note: Bauhaus - "She's in Parties")

Mr Dubious (Curt1s Stephens), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 16:02 (seventeen years ago)

Wow, I'd totally forgotten about that Ruts album!

Tom D (Tom D.), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

Cockney Rejects 'Where the Hell Is Babylon?'

The Slash My Father Wrote (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 16:05 (seventeen years ago)

umm i don't get the boundaries, is this about indie bands doing the dub thing being branded as a 'fake dub' ?
eg Primal Screams echo dek set, or the extra dub album that came with The Dead 60s debut ?
Just about every indie band that was at some point remixed by The Orb/Adrian Sherwood/Andrew Weatherall back in the 90s, howabout that Sabres of Paradise vs James ep ?

I loved 'em, fake or not.

briania, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

ooh. good album. weirdly, that's a different cover to the one i have in the archive.
never did manage to listen to their follow up though - just didn't seem to work second time around.

mark e, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 16:29 (seventeen years ago)

I made a compilation like this at some point back

Indie tracks that sounded very "dub" oriented

Saint Etienne - Western Wind/Tankerville
Primal Scream - Higher Than The Sun
Boo Radleys - Lazarus
One Dove - Sirens
Golden - Don't Destroy Me
The Orb - Perpetual Dawn
Bandulu - Jahquarius

that's all i can recall off the top of my head, will see if i can't pull it up from an old cdr somewhere later to remember the rest

rentboy, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 17:19 (seventeen years ago)

pretty sure there was a Ruby track on there too

tried not to get too into Trip Hop, stuck more for those things with a dubby bassline.
but not the drum n bass side of Dubby

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 17:37 (seventeen years ago)

xp. I never warmed up to the second Baby Fox either: more trip, less dub. It's an all-time favorite for my weed-smokin' surround-sound freak friend, though.

briania, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 17:43 (seventeen years ago)

xpost: i understand mark e and moonship's posts, but i thought the o.p's objective was looking for notable/liked/good tracks from the (sub)genre, not just gross generalizations about how pervaisve the technique was for a few months in the mid-90s

also one more occurred to me, that Faith Healers dub version of "Everything all at once forever" that came out on a promo 12''

rentboy, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 17:47 (seventeen years ago)

"voyage to the bottom of the sea" by mouth from this comp http://www.discogs.com/release/713937 is essential fake dub!

rio (r1o natsume), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 18:04 (seventeen years ago)

i always thought the bassline in "is this it" by the strokes was pretty dubby

rio (r1o natsume), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 18:07 (seventeen years ago)

(on that note: Bauhaus - "She's in Parties")

Bela Lugosi's Dead!

Erm, Fat Freddie's Drop?

chap, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 19:02 (seventeen years ago)

This is my playlist so far; as you can see, the definition is pretty loose...

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

Half of those at least I'm now thinking I need to drop.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

I guess electronic dub/digidub doesn't count here? Nor Grace Jones's dubbier tunes (since she has Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare playing on those)?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 19:16 (seventeen years ago)

Actually, I think I would add the 12" version of Grace's "She's Lost Control" on the list, even though half of the band is "real" Jamaicans there, it's still a Joy Division tune and it still sounds very new wave.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 19:18 (seventeen years ago)

Jeez, all you really need is a copy of Metal Box/Second Edition then.

Perry-Como-Zombie-Memorial-Radio-Now! (Ioannis), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 19:27 (seventeen years ago)

Also, the Clash's "Bankrobber"/"Robber Dub" would probably fit right in.

18 Wheeler - Prozac Beats

Discordian, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 20:10 (seventeen years ago)

oh yes, please add william orbit to the list of producers/remixers to the list i gave above.
there were supposed to be some william orbit remixes of 18 wheeler - but i dont think i ever heard them.

just remembered !

daydreamer - menswe@r - there was a big fat dub version on lammos britpop mixtape that i had on cassette.

mark e, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 20:31 (seventeen years ago)

i see adrian sherwood is still knocking them out -

Reverend And The Makers - Sundown On The Empire (Adrian Sherwood On U Sound Remix)

stirmonster, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 20:36 (seventeen years ago)

it was called : dub dreamer i think.

xpost : that sherwood remix was the first major label remix he had done in years.
felt weird seeing his name on an indie bands record again. and to be honest, its not yur average on-u remix - its very summer-y and nice.

mark e, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 20:38 (seventeen years ago)

why don't you use magnificent dance, the larry levan thing, I way prefer it

I know, right?, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

New Order - "Truth"

the801, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 21:14 (seventeen years ago)

Dodgy - UKRIP is a good one for this thread. And I'm certain WFANFC have a song dubbier than "Dead Fingers Talking". I'd probably suggest "Quiet Place".

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 21:20 (seventeen years ago)

someone already made a compilation for you nick : http://www.echobeach.de/eb_069_va-dubstars.html

mark e, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 22:49 (seventeen years ago)

I'm sure this thread has been done before. Anyway, I fully endorse all the following:

The Underground Lovers - Recognise
The Kitchens of Distinction - Anvil Dub
A.R. Kane - Catch My Drift
Saint Etienne - On The Shore
Seefeel - Blue Easy Sleep (I'm pretty sure this is right, one of the Polyfusia tracks)

The first two Souled American albums, in particular "Mar'boro Man" off Flubber. The bass is fat yet dances about at a nice, patient clip.

QuantumNoise, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 23:57 (seventeen years ago)

though i don't know how "fake" they are. one from a pasty u.k. pothead and one from some guidos on long island.

The Dears - Postcard from Purgatory
Dub Narcotic Sound System - Super Dub Narcotic

the first track is pretty good until it 'builds' into an underwhelming rock-out conclusion....the Dub Narcotic track is great all the way through
