Whatever You Want - Best of Status Quo (disc one)

Pretty much written out of any history of UK pop music now in favour of lightweights like The Beatles, Sex Pistols and David Bowie, but bar Sir Cliff still the most successful singles act in the UK. I guess ILM will go for something from their psych phase but it would be a shame to ignore the stuff from their purple patch in the mid to late seventies.

I don't have the heart to post disc two which features some truly execrable cover versions from the nineties.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 12:44 (seventeen years ago)

Caroline, easy.

Peel OTM with regards to "Down Down"

Carrie Bradshaw Layfield (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Wednesday, 17 September 2008 13:00 (seventeen years ago)

"Paper Plane" was the first one I liked.
"Caroline" was the first one I loved.
"Rockin' All Over The World" was the first one I hated.
"Whatever You Want" was OK, until it got nobbled by the Argos ads.
"Livin' On An Island" is a guilty pleasure, for personal reasons.
"What You're Proposin'" was the last one I liked.

But "Down Down" is straight-up perfect.

I've been living with my partner for over 23 years, and I only found out two weeks ago that he saw Status Quo SIX TIMES in the 1970s. SIX TIMES.

But "Down Down" is straight-up perfect.

heard it on the radio the other day, for the first time in a long time, and was amazed to find myself thinking pretty much the same thing.

They never got better than "Pictures Of Matchstick Men", which is a fantastic psych pop song.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 22 September 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

Geir, I thought you'd like 'Livin' on an island'.

Billy Dods, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 08:23 (seventeen years ago)

The only of their later work that I really like is "Rock'n'Roll". The others are all too closely connected with the limited harmonic reportoire of 50s rock'n'roll.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 08:24 (seventeen years ago)

Poll sadly missing "You're in the Army lol".

Not much of a loss although Bolland's original is ace.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 08:29 (seventeen years ago)

I'm going to skip this one.

Roy, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 09:09 (seventeen years ago)

I prefer Bolland's original as well. Geir: "Living' On An Island" is totally different from all the other Quo hits. It's mellow, mid-paced and acoustic-driven.

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 09:16 (seventeen years ago)

I know. But still harmonically very simple.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 09:22 (seventeen years ago)

Caroline is route one football, but awesome nonetheless.

The Wayward Johnny B, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 13:21 (seventeen years ago)

Voted "Proposin'".
Howevers, were it a Status's, ahem, albums poll, I'd go for Quo wholeheartedly :)
