Nu-gaze allowed.

Is "Shine On" by House Of Love shoegaze?

If not, then "Just Like Honey" by Jesus & Mary Chain is definitely, and that is a great song.

Not able to come up with a Top 10 as I am not quite sure about the boundaries, and I didn't like the early 90s experimental form of shoegaze (MBV, Chapterhouse etc.) much.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 18 September 2008 22:22 (seventeen years ago)

* A.R. Kane - Lolita
* Chapterhouse - Mesmerise
* Piano Magic - snowfall soon
* Kitchens of Distinction - under the sky, inside the sea
* Spiritualized - broken heart
* Ride - Kaleidoscope
* My Bloody Valentine - Soon
* Slowdive - Alison
* Jesus and Mary Chain - just like honey
* Serena Mannesh - Sapphire Eyes High

rollerblading on the back of a cereal box in 1997 (internet person), Thursday, 18 September 2008 23:34 (seventeen years ago)

* Spiritualized - broken heart

I love Spiritualized and all but how is a weepy all-orchestral ballad with zero guiars shoegaze exactly?

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 18 September 2008 23:37 (seventeen years ago)

This is going to disintegrate into "thats not shoegaze" reeeeally fast :(

Trayce, Friday, 19 September 2008 00:02 (seventeen years ago)

Probably, Trayce. For what it's worth:

"You Made Me Realise" - MBV
"Suicide" - Spacemen 3

Millsner, Friday, 19 September 2008 00:18 (seventeen years ago)

lilys - february 14

Lovenasium (electricsound), Friday, 19 September 2008 00:28 (seventeen years ago)

JAMC are the most overrated band of all-time, fuckers

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Friday, 19 September 2008 00:31 (seventeen years ago)

floppy challopsy

Lovenasium (electricsound), Friday, 19 September 2008 00:32 (seventeen years ago)

drunken bumbling rage morelike

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Friday, 19 September 2008 00:35 (seventeen years ago)

my younger self would have said--

slowdive 'avalyn I'
chapterhouse 'breather'
swirlies 'sarah sitting'
bailter space 'x'
lush 'scarlet'
boo radleys 'spaniard'
kitchens 'mad as snow'
blind mr jones 'dolores'
spiritualized 'step into the breeze'
ride 'like a daydream'

now i'd probably list 10 slowdive songs.

keythkeyth, Friday, 19 September 2008 00:45 (seventeen years ago)

here's my top 10, suck on it you shitcunts

ulrich schnauss - "on my own" OR "medusa"

i can't pick a winner out of those 2 but they kill everything else ever done in the genre, the rest is in no particular order

catherine wheel - "for dreaming"
verve - "she's a superstar"
m83 - "couleurs"
mbv - "loomer"
mercury rev - "frittering"
ride - "leave them all behind"
xasthur - "arcane and misanthropic projection"
serena-maneesh - "don't come down here"
the twilight sad - "that summer, at home, i had become the invisible boy"

I actually find your list pretty good. Ulrich Schnauss is a great choice. I'd go for medusa on those two. I also completely forgot 'the verve' used to do amazing shoegaze, that one is one of my favorite eps from the 90s. Out from that record I'd pick 'man called sun' but 'she's a superstar' would be a more common and better choice for the matter.

M83 veers a tad towards electro but we're not being strict purists over here so that is a great choice. One of the best songs this year imho.

Moka, Friday, 19 September 2008 02:14 (seventeen years ago)

Ah and yes. JAMC are definitely overrated... I actually didn't knew people consider them a good band, I think of themselves as one hit wonders.

Well do so then :) Would you call avalyn your favorite slowdive song? I'd personally pick almost any song of Pygmallion or the 5 ep over Souvlaki nowadays.

* Spiritualized - broken heart

yeah I'm sorry, I was looking at an old comp I did and I didn't even listen to the song. Ladies and gents would be a better choice, but scrap that anyways. Can't edit my original post but let's see:

* Spiritualized - broken heart

* Ulrich Schnauss - Medusa

There.

Moka, Friday, 19 September 2008 02:22 (seventeen years ago)

i would choose their first three EPs over everything they did afterwards

xpost

Lovenasium (electricsound), Friday, 19 September 2008 02:22 (seventeen years ago)

off the top of my head:

Kaleidoscope - the Boo Radleys
Black Metallic - Catherine Wheel
Son Of Mustang Ford - Swervedriver
Catch the Breeze - Slowdive
Pearl - Chapterhouse
Sight Of You - Pale Saints
Drive Blind - Ride
The Ballad of Adam and Eve - Moose
Feel - Verve
Ride the Tiger - the Boo Radleys

Bee OK, Friday, 19 September 2008 03:01 (seventeen years ago)

the Jesus and Mary Chain are NOT overrated!

Bee OK, Friday, 19 September 2008 03:15 (seventeen years ago)

To clarify:

JAMC, circa Psychocandy = overly mythologized, but still pretty fucking great. Yes, they had a schtick, but what a grand schtick it was..

JAMC post-Psychocandy = vastly underrated and overlooked.

Pillbox, Friday, 19 September 2008 05:36 (seventeen years ago)

my bloody valentine - honey power
my bloody valentine - only shallow
my bloody valentine - when you sleep
my bloody valentine - you made me realise
my bloody valentine - soft as snow (but warm inside)
my bloody valentine - loomer
my bloody valentine - soon
my bloody valentine - sueisfine
my bloody valentine - i can see it (but i can't feel it)
my bloody valentine - sometimes

6335, Friday, 19 September 2008 05:40 (seventeen years ago)

I see what you did there.

Moka, Friday, 19 September 2008 06:19 (seventeen years ago)

JAMC post-Psychocandy = vastly underrated and overlooked.

"Darkland" was a great album, and I believe also their bestselling.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 19 September 2008 08:50 (seventeen years ago)

The ones I can remember at the moment are way over-influenced by who's already getting mentioned, but I love all of the following:

Lilys - The Hermit Crab
Slowdive - Blue Skied an' Clear / Alison
Boo Radleys - Does This Hurt? / Spaniard
Swirlies - San Cristobal de las Casas
Medicine - One More
Kitchens of Distinction - What Happens Now?
Ride - Taste
Catherine Wheel - Texture
My Bloody Valentine - Off Your Face
Lorelei - Stop What You're Doing

nabisco, Friday, 19 September 2008 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

oh how could i have forgotten pale saints, of course they weren't all that shoegazey but then they were always included in conversations so 'a thousand stars burst open' is 10a.

keythkeyth, Friday, 19 September 2008 23:18 (seventeen years ago)

(My Lush pick would be "Downer," I think. Also I'm sure if I scanned my older CD racks there'd be a ton of good shoegazer bands that just aren't coming to mind right now...)

nabisco, Friday, 19 September 2008 23:18 (seventeen years ago)

two years pass...

someone who says JAMC is the most overrated band ever then proceeds to pick Catherine Wheel's "For Dreaming" as one of the greatest shoegaze songs of all time?! all of CW's b-sides are better than that, and that song (or anything post Chrome) doesn't even really have any shoegaze qualities.
