Not an impressive CD this one. My vote for "She Don't Use Jelly" also they got much better later in their career.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 21 September 2008 00:04 (seventeen years ago)

flaming lips or melvins. No Geir, they got different later on, not better.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 21 September 2008 00:06 (seventeen years ago)

Grant Lee Buffalo followed closely by Weezer and then Natalie Merchant and then Blues Traveler.

Tell me where the fuck you find a anorexic blapper (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 21 September 2008 00:32 (seventeen years ago)

I know you're all too cool for Natalie Merchant or whatever but "Carnival" is amazing.

rogermexico., Monday, 22 September 2008 04:17 (seventeen years ago)

Not a list to be proud of. If it were The Sweater Song I'd give it to Weezer, but in fact this most underrated of R.E.M. singles gets the nod over Buddy Holly.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 22 September 2008 04:24 (seventeen years ago)

Lots of this disc is very evocative for me of the year I was finishing college. Lot of weird memories tied up. So I went with "Mockingbirds," from one of the most underrated albums of the decade, Mighty Joe Moon.

I know you're all too cool for Natalie Merchant or whatever but "Carnival""Trouble Me" is amazing.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Monday, 22 September 2008 05:49 (seventeen years ago)

I've listened to "Mockingbirds" so many times today.

Tape Store, Monday, 22 September 2008 06:24 (seventeen years ago)

REM, but "Tomorrow" came on shuffle and it rocked me the fuck out so that's #2.

the only real micaroni (Euler), Monday, 22 September 2008 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

This CD is kind of inexplicable but some of the songs are good. Voted Bad Religion as that's possibly their best song and chances are no-one else will

The Slash My Father Wrote (DJ Mencap), Monday, 22 September 2008 14:27 (seventeen years ago)

REM but it's not exactly up against much competition.

Matt DC, Monday, 22 September 2008 14:40 (seventeen years ago)

Voted Bad Religion as that's possibly their best song

Since it is neither "Infected" or "Stranger Than Fiction," no.

Letters to Cleo and Weezer are both great. Natalie Merchant is good, but "Jealousy" and "Wonder" were much better singles. Destroy every other miserable piece of crap on this disc.

Phil D. (Pancakes Hackman), Monday, 22 September 2008 14:49 (seventeen years ago)

Somewhere in the 90's I went through a pop/rock sung by girls phase. Here And Now by Letters To Cleo sums it up.

elgolfo, Monday, 22 September 2008 15:01 (seventeen years ago)

I know you're all too cool for Natalie Merchant or whatever but "Carnival""Trouble Me" her secret huge rack is amazing.

SHE DON’T USE JELLY – The Flaming Lips
21ST CENTURY (DIGITAL BOY) – Bad Religion
SUGAR FREE JAZZ – Soul Coughing
WHAT’S THE FREQUENCY, KENNETH? – R.E.M.
BUDDY HOLLY – Weezer
GOOD – Better Than Ezra
TOMORROW – Silverchair

All of these are pretty good, although "Sugar Free Jazz," "Kenneth" and "Buddy Holly" suffer by comparison with much better singles from the same albums. I also think "Good" is probably a lot lamer than I'm thinking it is right now, so, Silverchair it is.

That Candlebox song is the most godawful thing to come out of the entire decade I think. All throughout the late 90s it would come on 99X, apparently already enshrined as some sort of classic or generational touchstone or something and from the opening bars I just couldn't stand the damn thing. Draggy, endless, rubbish.

Oh my god pink flamingoes (Pancakes Hackman), Monday, 29 September 2008 11:42 (seventeen years ago)

melvins, because they are the only band in that poll who are the melvins.

melvins, because they are the only band in that poll who are the melvins.

Unfortunately, the general ILM consensus did not comprehend this in time.
