1970's British Northern folk. West or East?

My dad's had a tug-of-war match against the Houghton Weavers, so I must count them as the enemy. Big ups to "Lindisfarne".

When I was a kid I couldn't stand the Houghton Weavers' t.v. show. Their mix of comedy and folk was extremely annoying. The only Lindisfarne record I've heard is that awful one with Gazza, but from what I've read about them I bet they made some good folk-rock records during the Seventies.

fifteen years pass...

This is the only topic mentioning Lindisfarne, so I'm upping it in hopes of a proper discussion developing. . .

I had read about their early stuff being amongst the best of the early `70's British folk/roots rock scene somewhere (probably All Music) and kept that little reminder in my head. So, a few years ago, when I finally saw some of their albums in the used record store, I bought them blindly. It was Dingly Dell and Fog on the Tyne. Have always loved those two ever since, but have never come across any of their other albums from those peak early years (stumbled into one from the late `70's that was very soft rock — meh). And I wasn't really into getting their stuff on CD through reissues or whatever, for some reason.

Anyway, I was able to finally get a copy of the first album (Nicely Out of Tune) this past week and it's just as strong as the other two from the period. Not better or worse, just very consistently good.

Any thoughts?
