i'm not talking about his dumbass "i'm controversial me" ramblings (hey, i'm like big ron with the refs comment there, do you see?), but the mans music...

so, what do you reckon? i've always found his stuff slightly pedestrian, i was surprised by how the whole Red series blew up (although he held off on 3 for quite a while. cuz 2 did so well? or cuz he couldn't follow it, and anyway did Red ripoff afrohead, or was it the other way round), can't really remember the compass to be honest.

so, fill me in dudes...

The Compass is fantastic, I think. I did name my blog after it afterall. It's got that really funky vibe to it yet it's that grinding sort of funk that I associate with "La Mouche" by Cassius rather than the sort of wishy washy aimless bar house funk.

Also his remix of La La Land by Green Velvet is well worth hearing, it really remoulds the track and makes it alot harder and MORE EDGY.

I amn't familiar with his early stuff so much but as I said on my blog, he is a peculiar man.

I mean, in the sense that The Compass and the La La Land remix are funky tech-house and his own actual sets tend to be pounding and slightly dull techno. (when he does a big show).

In Dublin last time he played the big club and did one set, the big techno one, and then played the Kitchen as a secret gig and played a totally different thing. I really wonder is he just giving his fanbase, who it must be said range from total inexperienced name spotters to devoted techno heads, what they want.

Technically speaking he's a bit of a legend, my friend was watching him in the DJ box in the Kitchen and told me the guy uses the mixer like no man he's ever seen.

Classic from what I've heard, but also perhaps a little dud for the differences in set, if what I say is fair.

I think he's brilliant. The first time I saw him DJ he was fearsomely funky with lots of hip-hop scratching and electro mixed in with techno. I love the "Red" series and the "World Service" CD is worth checking out too.

michael bourke, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Red 2" is a monumental song. It achieves itself completely. Beyond its near-perfection it's interesting for (to my mind) combining the menacing sheen of Detroit techno with the hard Aphrohead-style house on the Bush label at the time yet still sounding totally "purist" somehow.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

World Service IS actually good yes I forgot about that.

I have a live MD of his from the Red Box in Dublin which is better though.

Ronan, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A genius of modern sewerage.

Sarah, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My answer makes me sound like such a twat.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No it doesn't, detailed descriptions of dance songs=classic.

Ronan, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i like Starry's better though, she sounds like less of an ass. it's very hard to talk about techno—especially "classic" techno like Red 2—in non-rockist terms...

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I rely on obscure metaphors.

Ronan, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

as a techno dj*,i don't think much of him (this is based solely on world service and fuse presents... by the way,i've never seen him live)i think the best techno djs make the whole process sound seemless without all the tracks sounding the same, whereas dave clarke tends to fuck around too much, all these tricks(bang in the bass, bang it out again, etcetc ad nauseum) seem done for the sake of it and disturb the flow of what aren't very good tracks in the first place...this makes him sound like a techno dj for people who don't like techno...although i inintially disagreed with the notion of techno purism when i first started listening to it,believing it to be an excuse for posturing and snobbery,it was actually comparing dave clarke mixes to the likes of surgeon, jeff mills, and adam beyer that made me see people's point-stuff like scratching and so on almost invariably take away from techno mixes....the electro mix cd,on the other hand,is excellent, great tracks mixed together extremely well...as for his tracks,i couldn't name many but i know that there have been some good tracks that i've heard that turned out to be his...

*by this i mean i don't rate his work as a techno dj,not "speaking as a techno dj"...this post is fairly clumsily expressed but i'm in a bit of a hurry, might try to clarify things a bit later....

robin, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i think he's more of a techno dj for people that think techno is getting boaring. i saw his live set a couple years ago at tonic (toronto) and it blew me away. he did a great job at mixing things up and not alowing the trax to become too predictable. i don't think his records convey how great he is live, unfortunately.

dyson, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'No One's Driving' is ace.

stevo, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

An absolute GOD!!! Every single time i've seen him dj its been mental and seeing him do techno & electro sets on the same night in the same club was pretty awesome, i'd say his breezeblock/essential mixes are better than world service.

el wanko, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ambivalent feelings. Yes, the Red series is banging but jeez did he rip-off Underground Resistance and Kevin Saunderson. Niet normaal zeg. Last year there was a very cool Dutch tv documentary on Dave. The man is a total misanthrope, fascinating.

Omar, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

His mixing used to be ace (both his techno and electro sets), haven't heard him in a while and apparently he's repeating himself too many times these days, playing identical sets and stuff

Wisdom to the wise (Red2): the Robert Hood remix is divine! "Bring the lights down...."

also very much appreciated his 2 Electro Boogie mixes on K7! I reckon he was one of the few people to keep that scene alive mid- nineties, no?

Johan, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love Dave Clarke. Bar Underworld, there is no techno act I listen to as regularly. As a DJ, there are few I love as much, and none of them are in techno. I have eight bootleg mixes (all taped off the radio over the years) that I listen to pretty frequently, and I dig out Archive One often too. I find him consistently potent and exciting. I love a lot of his remixes too - Leftfield's Phat Planet, Underworld's King Of Snake, Dave Angel's Tokyo Stealth Fighter, Chemical Brothers' Loops Of Fury and Chemical Beats, Inner City's Ahnongay, Midfield General's Coatnoise, Depeche Mode's Dream On.

Martin Skidmore, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Gald All Over" sure is a great tune... what, did he go electronic or someting?

g, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i even typo on my jokes....

g, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That mix of "Coatnoise" is fucking awesome.

Has anyone heard this? Looks like an acid house mix...

Neil S, Sunday, 30 November 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

I haven't heard it but the track listing looks pretty cannon.

If you are interested in this stuff you should go over to acid-house.net and download a few of Placid's mixes.

that song on a freebie compilation I got when I ordered a pizza. (Display Name), Monday, 1 December 2008 04:01 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah I think I've got one of those on my hard drive somewhere. I'm actually quite interested in "cannon" stuff since I don't currently have a great deal of that, so I might buy this!

Neil S, Monday, 1 December 2008 13:09 (seventeen years ago)

two years pass...

So laughin' Dave's got a Fabric mix out, anyone heard it? Views?

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:05 (fourteen years ago)
