My distaste of reissues making singles charts means I will not vote for the best single here (Bluebells), so I vote for the second best (Pet Shop Boys) instead.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 22 September 2008 13:09 (seventeen years ago)

"The Key, the Secret"! Eurodance at its best.

Tuomas, Monday, 22 September 2008 13:11 (seventeen years ago)

2 Unlimited - No Limit

without question.

GamalielRatsey, Monday, 22 September 2008 13:12 (seventeen years ago)

Spin Doctors vs Fresh Prince

Carrie Bradshaw Layfield (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Monday, 22 September 2008 13:13 (seventeen years ago)

1. Chaka Demus & Pliers
2. Pet Shop Boys
3. Robin S
4. The Goodmen
5. Snow

They're a '90s odd couple. And an odds-on choice for laughs. (blueski), Monday, 22 September 2008 13:24 (seventeen years ago)

1. Go West
2. Tease Me
3. The Key, The Secret
4. Pray
5. Relight My Fire
6. Show Me Love
7. Right Here
8. Informer
9. Little Bird (esp. the Todd Terry remix on the 12")
10. Are You Gonna Go My Way?
11. Give It Up
12. Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)

mike t-diva, Monday, 22 September 2008 14:10 (seventeen years ago)

esp. the Todd Terry remix on the 12"

ooh i've only heard the Utah Saints one (which, of course, re-uses the 'There Must Be An Angel' vocal hook again)

They're a '90s odd couple. And an odds-on choice for laughs. (blueski), Monday, 22 September 2008 14:12 (seventeen years ago)

"All That She Wants". But "No Limit" comes second. This year was disastrous BTW.

zeus, Monday, 22 September 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)

Awful list. I thought it was the very early 90s that Smash Hits writers said was a poor time for pop. Looks like it continued then.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 22 September 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

because Ace Of Base and 2 Unlimited set standards no-one else could hope to match thereafter? xp

Herman ur mad there was lots of good pop this year

They're a '90s odd couple. And an odds-on choice for laughs. (blueski), Monday, 22 September 2008 16:05 (seventeen years ago)

Not a particularly good vintage for mainstream singles, no. But from around 1993 onwards, the quality of albums in general was going in the right direction.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 22 September 2008 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

Robin S ... no contest.

Eric H., Monday, 22 September 2008 17:13 (seventeen years ago)

Some ice cold solid gold eurodance headbangers in here. Most of which I remember rocking clammy Llorat de Mar disco-pubs in that summer. The stink of cheesburger/kamakaze jello shot vomit is still a vivid memory. Anyway.

1. "Right Here"
2. "Ain't No Love"
3. "No Limit"
4. "Show Me Love"
5. "The Key, The Secret"
6. "All That She Wants"
7. "Dreams"

DavidM, Monday, 22 September 2008 17:16 (seventeen years ago)

Difficult choice. I'm tempted to vote for M People as a cop-out. Anyway:

10. Mr Loverman
9. Mr Vain
8. Are You Gonna Go My Way
7. No Limit
6. All That She Wants
5. Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)
4. Go West
3. Dreams
2. That's The Way Love Goes
1. Relight My Fire

I was too busy flopping my fringe about to Suede to notice much of this... however, I was working in a record shop when that Janet Jackson album dropped, and I do have a lingering fondness for it. (Which I didn't, at the time.)

The Accountant Of Taste (Masonic Boom), Monday, 22 September 2008 20:13 (seventeen years ago)

it's one of my favourite janet tracks, which is saying a lot. still...gotta go with sistas with voices.

1. right here
2. that's the way love goes
3. ain't no love (ain't no use)
4. dreams
5. no limit
6. boom! shake the room

9. go west
10. the key, the secret
11. show me love
12. mr vain
13. love song for a vampire
14. i will always love you

lex pretend, Monday, 22 September 2008 20:51 (seventeen years ago)

What a year for comedy dancehall!

PSB, just over Shaggy.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 01:17 (seventeen years ago)

2 - Elton John & Kiki Dee True Love Nov 1993

I must have really missed this year/month! (thank god!)

Mark G, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 06:42 (seventeen years ago)

There's obviously a secretive cabal of UB40 fanatics on ILM as they hijacked the New Pop albums poll too.
