likely the greatest band ever from alabama. they have a strange affinity for celtic music which they mix with a beatlesque pop abandon. the celtic influence is actually rather muted but that seems to be a required mention. they also have excellent lyrics about history and ideologies as well as having wonderful little love songs. james butler is a fantastic songwriter. they had a new album in 2000 called 'crimson panzer' but i don't think it was ever officially released, i got a cd-r from the band after mailing them, it was a return to form after the disappointing 'antedium'. the essential record is the 'strum and drum' reissue on beehive rebellion, it was originally on subway organization but thenew version had loads of single and compilation tracks, 34 great songs in all.

four months pass...
Ah yes Sex Clark Five. You really dont find much written about them. Strange little songs with lots of twists and turns, historical and political references that are probably lost on most people. I thought they had long broken up. I would rate "Strum and Drum" and "Antedium" two of the best albums ever. Hilarious titles like "America Under the Mongol Yoke Prelude" I remember "The Onion" featured them in an article years ago. Thank you for your update.

ok guys.sex clark five.
a.c. newmsn loves them.why? cause they are obscure power pop.
i mean,to say you like "cheap trick" and "big star" is not so original...anyway, "strum and drum" is great!! -
i could bet 20 dollars that robert pollard like them too - he stole lots of ideas for from them, for the "alien lanes" lp!! (lo-fi short beatls/who songs)

For people who've listened to a lot of power pop, they're hardly obscure. I'm not surprised at all Carl Newman's been namedropping them somewhere... good! yay! They deserve it.

I don't know of any other bands ever to come from Huntsville, AL that amounted to anything (and I lived there 24 years). They kind of hold a special place in my heart. Sex! Clark! Five!

i've got nothing new to say about "sec clark five".
i just wanted to write something, so the thread will be at to the top again, with the hope that people will give them the respect and attention they deserve.

"i dislike power pop intensely, but love sex clark five. go figure! "

maybe cause they are not exactly power-pop: they are way more minimalist,pop-yes,power-very much less.
maybe low-fi-minimalist-power-pop

sex clark five are up there with the dentists in the pantheon of bands who had the gbv thing down cold before gbv did. i saw them play live at maxwell's a million years ago and told one of the guitarists i loved their song "faith" but couldn't figure out one of the chords. i got a letter maybe five days later with the entire song written out, with lyrics and chords, and an explanation of the particular chord i had asked about. based on that 45-second conversation at maxwell's, i've had an ongoing correspondence with them that's now well over a decade and they send me free copies of almost everything they do (which, granted, isn't much these days, but i love them to death for it). i wish they would tour more than once every 15 years.

I've raved about sex clark five for years. Their records are inspirational.

arborist, Sunday, 19 March 2006 06:43 (nineteen years ago)

have they done anything since crimson panzer?

keyth (keyth), Sunday, 19 March 2006 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

I interviewed the band many years ago and write to them every so often. It is my understanding they have several albums of unreleased material. I don't think they've issued anything since Crimson Panzer except for compilation appearances and two sessions for the late John Peel.

I've got "Strum and Drum" and quite like it. Based on this album alone, I wouldn't really classify them as power-pop. They are less like Big Star and a bit more like the Lucksmiths.

Back in like, 1988 or something they were signed to the British label Subway Organisation (Soup Dragons, Pop Will Eat Itself, Razorcuts) and were minorly popular for about 3 weeks when they recorded the aforementioned , even recording a Peel Session.

I never considered the sc5 power pop. Always thought they were unique and above that too. I hope someone puts out a box set.

diplodocus, Monday, 3 April 2006 02:50 (nineteen years ago)

if they put out a box set they should omit 'antedium'.

keyth (keyth), Monday, 3 April 2006 03:16 (nineteen years ago)

some of my favorite sc5 are from 'antedium' It's no 'strum and drum' but what is..

Carl Newman seems to like it.

five years pass...

This video is kind of odd. It looks like a reunion of some big-time band from the 70's or 80's, except it's this weird little group that nobody knows. I have also experienced their niceness when it comes to sending letters to fans....
