As The Jam and Elvis Costello are both represented with some of their weaker moments, my vote goes to Magazine with a wonderful early postpunk song.

"First Time", classic

lotsa good stuff here. gone for television.

nonightsweats, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 06:27 (seventeen years ago)

"saturday night in the city of the dead" for the title alone.

Marco Damiani, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 10:21 (seventeen years ago)

Given the choice here, it's a tossup between Mannequin and Shot by Both Sides.
Shelley's guitar riff and McGeogh's solo are pretty unbeatable.

Dr X O'Skeleton, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 10:54 (seventeen years ago)

The Damned get this one, as far as I'm concerned, but it's a very strong field indeed. Nice to see SLF brought in along with the usual suspects.

Soukesian, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 11:28 (seventeen years ago)

I like all the songs on this apart from #6. And I don't think I've heard #22. Fave might be Sonic Reducer or Mannequin. Or Shot By Both Sides. Or X Offender. Or New Rose. Or... you get the picture.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 24 September 2008 11:33 (seventeen years ago)

Very tough - First blush said Buzzcocks, second evaluation said give the American love to Dead Boys because the song still slays, and then I thought about how much I miss Robert Quine as a guitar player - so 'Love Comes In Spurts' it is ...

BlackIronPrison, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 12:16 (seventeen years ago)

"Suspect Device"

Jazzbo, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 13:35 (seventeen years ago)

Ambition, but its a tactical vote to give the lesser known tracks a vote or two, What Do I Get and SHot by Both Sides are nearly perfect.

Nice list, mostly obvious as is the way with such albums, a couple of nice surprises, e.g the Ultravox album track- ans a thankfully few set of of pub rock clunkers.

Sandy Blair, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 13:53 (seventeen years ago)

Talkin' about PRC's, is that a "Dave Edmunds' Greatest Hits" being TV advertised heavily? Well, if it can happen for Dave Dee, dozy and that, .....

Mark G, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 13:56 (seventeen years ago)

Dave Dee is some sort of media mogul. Dave Edmunds isn't, but I'd sooner listen to his records.

Soukesian, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 14:26 (seventeen years ago)

well, some magazine was praising "The Sun Goes Down", one of the DDDBM&T B-sides, and they were right to.

Mark G, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 14:31 (seventeen years ago)

Another vote for "Suspect Device".

o. nate, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 15:02 (seventeen years ago)

"Chinese Rocks" and "Baby Baby" are contenders, but it's gotta be The Boys.

Mister Jim, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

These are so much harder than the Nuggets CDs...

Gary Gilmore's Eyes - The Adverts
What Do I Get? - Buzzcocks
X Offender - Blondie
Chinese Rocks - The Heartbreakers
New Rose - The Damned
See No Evil - Television
Suspect Device - Stiff Little Fingers
Mannequin - Wire
Love Comes In Spurts - Richard Hell & The Voidoids
Sonic Reducer - Dead Boys

think I'm going with "Suspect Device"

sad man in him room (milo z), Wednesday, 24 September 2008 17:50 (seventeen years ago)

for me it comes down to "What Do I Get?," "New Rose" or "See No Evil." the Damned are just a bit better. fantastic CD!

bump

Bee OK, Friday, 26 September 2008 02:16 (seventeen years ago)

"saturday night in the city of the dead" for the title alone.

it actually misspelled on purpose, it really is "Satday Night In the City."

Bee OK, Friday, 26 September 2008 02:24 (seventeen years ago)

my short list would be

Don't Dictate - Penetration
Bingo Master - The Fall
Chinese Rocks - The Heartbreakers
Mannequin - Wire
Love Comes In Spurts - Richard Hell & The Voidoids

I can't even reason my way into a vote

Edward III, Friday, 26 September 2008 02:38 (seventeen years ago)

Trash - NY Dolls.
So what?

elgolfo, Friday, 26 September 2008 05:28 (seventeen years ago)

Difficult, difficult! I'll go for aunt Patty.

M@tt He1ges0n, Sunday, 28 September 2008 05:51 (seventeen years ago)

M@tt He1ges0n, Sunday, 28 September 2008 05:52 (seventeen years ago)

X-Ray Spex.

dad a, Sunday, 28 September 2008 22:03 (seventeen years ago)

One more for the Dolls here. There are bands who recorded better stuff on this disc, but "Trash" takes all comers.

Mark G, Monday, 29 September 2008 07:22 (seventeen years ago)

good results. damn great CD, minus a couple of minor tracks which didn't receive any votes anyhow.

I’ll leave the 'song' dissection to G*** and his 'disciples' (Ioannis), Monday, 29 September 2008 09:31 (seventeen years ago)
