I have a feeling Starfish will win because it's the (only) one most people know. I don't like the idea of waiting until Christmas for the results, though. ;)

Bimble, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 18:19 (seventeen years ago)

You left off Box Of Birds and all the extra track albums

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 19:08 (seventeen years ago)

I have a feeling Starfish will win because it's the (only) one most people know.

There's a substantial number of Priest = Aura fans here.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 19:08 (seventeen years ago)

To understate.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 19:14 (seventeen years ago)

I have a feeling Starfish will win because it's the (only) one most people know.

Alternatively, it might win because there's a strong argument that it is, song for song, their finest album. I unreservedly adore everything they've ever done (with the exception of Seance, which is a bit meh), but I still think that Starfish is, as the Time Being might put it Himself, apotheosis-ville.
I mean, f**k, Destination, Hotel Womb... (head explodes.)

Former Golden Boy, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 19:28 (seventeen years ago)

sorry about box of birds. i'm pretty much a church neophyte. are those extra-track dealies big oversights, too?

Remote Luxury, and Back With Two Beasts certainly belong.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 22:12 (seventeen years ago)

Seance. I didn't even have to think about that one. It's still my favourite.

No Quick Smoke at Spot's, no credibility.

But having said that, Priest = Aura for mine.

It's true! It's true! (SeekAltRoute), Wednesday, 24 September 2008 23:49 (seventeen years ago)

Voted Heyday becuz it's awesome and hasn't been mentioned yet

'Breaker' Moran (wilter), Wednesday, 24 September 2008 23:54 (seventeen years ago)

No Quick Smoke at Spot's, no credibility.

Get up to speed man! AQSAS is no longer necessary now because all those tracks are collected on the 2xCD reissues.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 24 September 2008 23:56 (seventeen years ago)

voted heyday but admittedly i only know 3 of their albums.

Capitaine Jay Vee, Thursday, 25 September 2008 01:37 (seventeen years ago)

I'll go with The Blurred Crusade, the first album I heard of theirs and still my favorite. Is this the case for anyone else? First heard is best?

ilxor, Thursday, 25 September 2008 02:47 (seventeen years ago)

First heard is best?

My first heard was Heyday and is still my sentimental favorite (purchased the LP right after I saw them blow Echo & The Bunnymen completely off the stage). Still, I voted P=A

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 25 September 2008 06:34 (seventeen years ago)

I first heard Priest = Aura which is my second favourite after Hologram of Baal. Then it would be Heydey and Starfish tied.

Tim F, Thursday, 25 September 2008 06:39 (seventeen years ago)

starfish. i was pretty disappointed with the three albums that followed and haven't heard the ones that came after that. blurred crusade would be #2

so difficult here - but I'll go with Priest.

Marco Damiani, Thursday, 25 September 2008 07:55 (seventeen years ago)

sorry about box of birds. i'm pretty much a church neophyte.

A Box of Birds, while no masterpiece, does contain at least one example of that rare beast: the cover version that is hugely superior to its antecedant. I'm talking about The Endless Sea here, which is an absolute must-hear. Kilbey sings it better than Iggy, his bassline subtly improves on the original, and the dual-Ebow passages that bookend the first verse are sublimely haunting and ominous.

Former Golden Boy, Saturday, 27 September 2008 17:22 (seventeen years ago)

Fuck, why does this poll last until December?

I have a feeling Starfish will win because it's the (only) one most people know.

Alternatively, it might win because there's a strong argument that it is, song for song, their finest album.

^^^THIS!

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 28 September 2008 05:47 (seventeen years ago)

It's gonna make me so happy if P=A wins. Then we'll know we have banded together as Church fiends and spoke the gospel to the world good and proper!

The More You Live The Faster You Will Die (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Sunday, 28 September 2008 06:52 (seventeen years ago)

Bimble, it's obvious there are better albums in the Church catalog than Priest. I'd argue it with you, but we're both probably drunk (I am!) So fuck it.

ilxor, Sunday, 28 September 2008 07:06 (seventeen years ago)

Bimble, it's obvious there are better albums in the Church catalog than Priest.

Questionable logic from someone who voted Blurred Crusade.

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 28 September 2008 08:56 (seventeen years ago)

BHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA!!!! PWNED

The More You Live The Faster You Will Die (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Sunday, 28 September 2008 09:14 (seventeen years ago)

Starfish is booooooooooooring to listen to all the way through though I like many of the tracks as separate entities

early Church is where it's at IMO

Cletus Tiffins (Curt1s Stephens), Sunday, 28 September 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)

I saw a video of these guys once and they were insufferably hyper and dorky (which is a pretty funny thing for *me* to complain about). But that said, awesome band as far as I can tell from the limited amount I've heard of them.

RabiesAngentleman, Sunday, 28 September 2008 17:22 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah yeah, Priest is awesome too, I know. But simply put, they never topped The Blurred Crusade. It hits hard with the opening track and never lets up.

ilxor, Sunday, 28 September 2008 17:45 (seventeen years ago)

two months pass...

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

I swear this thing just let me post twice, because I'm pretty sure I already voted for the awesomeness that is Seance.

Or am I thinking of another poll?

I Am Bored Of This Screen Name (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 24 December 2008 00:29 (seventeen years ago)

there was this

Favourite album by The Church...poll closes May 8

Merry Christuomas (electricsound), Wednesday, 24 December 2008 00:32 (seventeen years ago)

What in the living fuck? A Church poll is closing tomorrow that was started three months ago! Oh shit! One of my fave bands in the universe, those guys.

You know, Elvis Telecom told me the other night he has been working on a 33 1/3 style essay about Priest = Aura! I thought that was remarkable.

I wouldn't rep for Seance as a best Church album but there are pieces of Seance that randomly come into my head to this day for no apparent reason even after 20 years or whatever. "Electric", "Electric Lash", but especially "It's No Reason" & "Now, I Wonder Why", yeah those are the two biggies from that one for me. "Travel By Thought" gets major bonus points for being truly a risk-taking song for them, though.

xpost w/Electricsound, sorry

Geese Is The Word (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Wednesday, 24 December 2008 00:41 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah I was kindof shocked we hadn't done this before, actually, Jim. I'm so glad we've cleared this up. Maybe I don't have such a bad memory after all.

Fuck.

ilxor, Thursday, 25 December 2008 08:49 (seventeen years ago)

A fine and proper result I can agree with.

Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Thursday, 25 December 2008 09:03 (seventeen years ago)

Why in the name of all that is holy did such a TERRIBLE album as Heyday place so high?

I Am Bored Of This Screen Name (Masonic Boom), Thursday, 25 December 2008 10:50 (seventeen years ago)

i was hoping this thread was about 2008's most successful sub-board

buzza, Thursday, 25 December 2008 13:22 (seventeen years ago)

Hey, there is nothing wrong with Heyday. Nothing. Took me awhile to really "get" Tantalized, though.

Geese Is The Word (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Friday, 26 December 2008 18:35 (seventeen years ago)

What I find interesting is the difference between Starfish's low placement in the other poll and how well it did here.

Geese Is The Word (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Friday, 26 December 2008 18:37 (seventeen years ago)

Heyday's a decent album. Not sure why anyone would take issue with it, unless they hate the whole Teardrop Explodes horn stuff they get into.

burt_stanton, Friday, 26 December 2008 18:53 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

Their cover of "Hounds of Love" is pretty nifty. The truth of this reminded me of their cover of the Monkees' "The Porpoise Song" and brings me to this question: favorite covers they've done?

Cunga, Thursday, 29 July 2010 09:48 (fifteen years ago)

! One of my favourite bands covering one of my favourite songs! Where can their take on Hounds of Love be heard?
For the reasons I outlined above (under a different pseudonym), their version of The Endless Sea is my favourite of their covers.

Vast Halo, Thursday, 29 July 2010 18:32 (fifteen years ago)

Really like their cover of "Hiroshima Mon Amour," but I've also been digging their version of "Wide Open Road." "Hounds Of Love" is on the Coffee Hounds single.

Once during a soundtrack, they covered "Don't Fear The Reaper" - terrific cover and apparently a version of it was recorded for A Box Of Birds but it was deleted at the last minute.

Still want to hear a recording of that Christmas show from years back that was filled with Pink Floyd and Hawkwind covers.
