An album so nice...I bought it twice!

Have you ever liked an album so much that you've been tempted to buy it when you can't find anything else in the shop, even though you already own it?

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

"This is Hardcore". I actually lost it twice, and re-purchased it back twice. Can't live without the girl.

Simon, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I take it replacing a lost/damaged copy doesn't count, nor does buying something in a different format/collectable edition.

Sean is talking about true insanity.

Nick, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I don't want to talk about how many copies of "Perfect Prescription" I own. I just don't.

kate the saint, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Wow...it would be strange to buy the same album over and over...best remedy is to avoid record stores for a while if you are doing this!! :)

james edmund L, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

There are some records I have on many formats, largely due to the death of vinyl etc. I think I have New Order's "Substance" on tape, vinyl, and CD. Also the following on CD and Vinyl: "Loveless", "isn't Anything", UltraVividScene's "Rev", and others. But yeah, the basic point does hold, I often see cheap second hand copies of stuff I already have and am tempted to buy it on a "well I know that's good" basis.

PihkalBoy, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I think I've got more than one copy of each of the first 5 Throwing Muses albums. I am a sad man indeed.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I usually only repurchase albums when the first one has been damaged in some way. And I've only done this a couple of times with albums I really treasure (like His N Hers) because I'm such a cheap bastard.

Nicole, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Cripes, if I did that approach, I'd own eighteen copies each of every Chameleons release and four thousand copies of _Loveless_. This would be problematic.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Speaking of "repurchasing only when the album is damaged", my copy of Loveless got smashed when I was moving to my new apartment and I haven't decided whether I should get a new copy yet. ;-)

Nicole, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ned, surely you *do* own 4000 copies of Loveless. They've just got different band names on. ;)

Tom, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Tom is officially the funniest person I know now.

ANYWAYS, I own two copies of Different Class (the domestic US release and the special UK release with the extra b-side disc), three copies of Generation Terrorists (US release, UK release, and...erm, UK release, someone bought it for me as a gift and I keep forgetting to return it. Actually, I own the vinyl now too, so make that four until I get rid of the extra CD), two copies of Gold Against the Soul (US release and Japanese release), two copies of Achtung Baby (I forgot I already had it on CD). I think those are the only multiples I have, but I could be wrong.

This isn't counting the ones I destroyed and rebought or the ones I had on tape/vinyl and then bought on CD, because once I got the replacement I rid myself of the old copy, so that I only have one nice clean copy.

Ally, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

That's the most ludicrous thing I've ever heard!

Tim Baier, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Not really, Tim, when you take into account that different versions of the same album have different tracks, or sometimes an artist will rerelease an album and add on some stuff - it's still owning two copies of the same thing, but they're different. You're basically paying another $18 for a handful of songs though so maybe it is ridiculous.

Ally, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

It sounds ludicrous on the surface, but obviously others have this urge as well. No, I didn't mean replacing a damaged copy. What I mean: you're at the record store, and you really REALLY want to buy a record or CD, or what have you, but nothing is leaping out at you. Occasionally when this happens I have the tempatation to just buy something I already own and love (like Loveless for example) just to scratch the itch.

I guess it begs the question, though...how many of you have played a CD so much you've had to replace it more than once (I would say vinyl doesn't count because it's much easier to damage the surface and the sound, but use your own judgement).

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh, and by the way, I'm not saying that you actually have to buy that same album again...just to consider it.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I love this question. And yes, I have considered it. Only with used CDs or records, though. I see a record I love used, I want to find it a nice home. The idea of it languishing in the bins for an extended period of time makes me sad & I want to kind of shepard the thing, get it in the right hands. Only actually followed through on it once or twice, and then I usually wind up giving one copy away.

Mark, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I just put it to the front of the display.

Nick, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Well sure, I have bought "reissue" records that contain extra and/or remastered tracks before and promptly sold (or gave away) my original copy, but only if I feel there is no other way to get the extra tracks or the mastering quality of the original CD is inferior (in which case I usually seek it out on vinyl instead). But never just buying or considering buying something just to do it. I'd rather take a pot shot guess. Besides, there's ALWAYS something good and new to buy.

When I see great albums used, a lot of times I will buy them for my "less enlightened" friends. Seems to happen a lot with Swervedriver's MEZCAL HEAD, Spoon A SERIES OF SNEAKS, and TROMPE LE MONDE by the Pixies. I've bought those albums multiple times for folks.

Tim Baier, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I don't know if this counts, but whenever I see Orange Juice's You Can't Hide Your Love Forever in a shop, I buy it and foist in on someone. (Which -- as I live in Chicago and it's OOP in the U.S. -- is very rare, it's happened, say, four or five times.)

Scott Plagenhoef, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yeah, i get that sometimes, though i never actually buy the things... It tends to happen especially when i see a neglected copy of "Giant Steps" by the Boo Radleys or the Adrenalin EP by the same band that's been stuck in the second hand section or reduced to £3.99 hence lowering it's value though i would pay top prices for either release (but i don't need to cos i bought them at fairly cheap fares).

dog latin, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I sense somebody has been having a joke at my expense somewhere on this thread. I AM HURT. I'm going to go home and cry and want to die.

Nobody *has* to buy _Loveless_ again if it's damaged.

*pauses*

I'm surprised I was actually able to type that. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I DON'T EVEN OWN LOVELESS, WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT, RAGGETT?

Um, anyhow.

Tim: I haven't given away my *originals* of the CDs I personally named because the tracklistings are different. Ex: US Generation Terrorists has a track that UK one doesn't, while the UK one has about 6 extra tracks. It sucks, why Sony did something that asinine is beyond me. Thankfully, I got one of the copies used so it was like $5. Pulp did the same thing. I HATE that.

Ally, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I would say your life isn't complete, but I somehow have the feeling you'd find this distinction inadequate.

Besides which, the one album everyone needs is, in fact, a recording of Kepler's harmonic music of the spheres. Surely.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Everytime I see Tigermilk in a store I just get this strange urge to pick it up and look at it and then buy it. I guess I just wanna feel the excitement of buying a B&S album again.

Marc, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yep, I'm another one with two copies of Loveless, but this is because my vinyl copy was played till it was completely worn - something I've never done on an album before, although I have done this to a number of 7's

I have a better stylus thesedays however!

I also have two copies of bis' first album, I bought another copy because I really wanted to hear it on a long journey once and saw it cheap on CD.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I have done this a lot. Not actually bought it, but looked covetously upon records I already own. Generally there's some kind of rationalisation re. I can give it to a friend but get real Tom, the actual reason is that you want to hear it and don't have it with you and are seriously contemplating shelling out a tenner for one play in the CD walkman.

When I worked in the shop I used to get review copy singles and albums and then would want to buy the actual one just for the excitement of seeing it in a shop.

Tom, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Two copies of: Reading, Writing & Arithmetic / The Queen Is Dead / Louder Than Bombs / Glimmer (Glo-Worm) / Black Tambourine: Complete Recordings / 69 Love Songs.

I used to have two copies of the second Primitives LP, but one was stolen. And that's a true story.

the pinefox, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

You are all insane

My gasted is well flabba, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Is it just as insane with books? Because I know someone who has bought Ulysses at least seven times. I bought the first Sugarcubes album again by mistake cos it had a different cover and I didn't realise I had it, somehow. I am very stupid. I don't still have it though, I just gave it to my girlfriend as a birthday present.

Ally C, Thursday, 19 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Cookie, one day I'll dedicate a song to your second copy of the first Sugarcubes album.

the pinefox, Friday, 20 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Does owning both 'The World Won't Listen' and 'Louder Than Bombs' count? :)

DG, Friday, 20 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Books show signs of use. It's much easier to take care of CDs so that they don't sound any different from when you bought them. Another couple of times through and I think I will be replacing my copy of Gravity's Rainbow.

Josh, Friday, 20 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The Rheostatics refer to this phenomenon in the song "fan letter to Michael Jackson. If anyone cares. :/

Grim is Kim, Saturday, 21 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Repurchased to change format, repurchased to upgrade condition, repurchased something I've previously owned ('bout a dozen times now), and - gulp - currently own two CDs twice, though neither quite fits the "liked so much" question.

Bang Tango, DANCIN' ON COALS: First copy's liner booklet got slightly crumpled when scanned to illustrate a magazine article (great piece: Chuck Eddy's 'Vampire Rock', an outtake/unpublished chapter from Accidental Evolution). Second copy was mint and cheap, so I bought it to replace first. Yet I didn't part with the first copy (as I'd normally do in these circumstances) because, erm, I developed paranoia that if the new copy was damaged I'd need the latter to fall back on. So yes, insane, unquestionably. (It is a good album, though, deserved replacing, so maybe I could claim keeping it through reverence... which is probably worse, come to think of it...)

Vain, NO RESPECT: Happened to see this selling on Ebay for $50US, next day saw several copies in a local used store for coin change. Bought one, in mint condition to replace my pre-used used one, thinking maybe I'd sell the other. Reality, though, is I'll never be arsed to sell anything on Ebay so I'm bascially just kidding myself. And insane, clearly, though a fairly minor application of that term. Probably wouldn't hold up in court.

AP, Saturday, 21 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I have several books in their original language and in translation? Is this bad? I have been tempted to buy different translations of the same book to compare them. Is this bad too?

I have bought records twice when I've leant the original copy to someone else, and don't expect to get it back. I have also bought bargain basement copies of records I own, just because, say, a copy of DI Go Pop for 20p isn't to be sneezed at. (TRUE!)

alex thomson, Sunday, 22 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Well...I just did this two minutes ago, so I felt the need to post to this thread again. I did it because the copy I had originally was a gift from someone I so despise now that I can't even stand to have gifts from this person. So, I went and bought the US release of the album in question, just so I can give away the tainted copy.

I don't know if this counts per se as I didn't buy the first one, so it's not like I'm doing this at a loss for me monetarily, but I just can't stand to have the filthy thing in my house. So I bought a new one, that doesn't have that stigma attached to it.
