Ooooh dredge up those awful memories.

w/special points for GRATE original songs that became unlistenable after studio fuX0ring.

The remixes of "Get Ur Freak On" that were included with the single were exceptionally horrid if my repressed memory of them serves.

The remixes of Phoenix "If I Ever Feel Better". Even Daft Punk couldn't get it right...

Siegbran Hetteson, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

any thoughts about these p. diddy/bad boy posters around (nyc esp.) that say "we invented the remix"? can some hi-tone scholar debunk that?

Steve K, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

HAhahaha I have one of those in my room I think it's so funny. It's oriented horizontally so that his head's looking right at you.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i found the remixes for Reunited unlistenable

bc, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

phoenix's were the worst ever ?!! you're kidding. there are a million awful remixes, and you happened to pick one i hunted for for ages + ages. the one that goes 'jesus took my place/ somebody took my place' *that* one was ace!! the buffalo bunch one wasn't bad either.

piscesboy, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm pretty sure that most of the worst remixes I've ever heard have been remixes of U2 tracks for b-sides. I can't recall a lot of remix titles or remixers at the moment, but there are some truly awful mixes of "Mofo", "Discotheque", "Mysterious Ways", "Lemon", "Even Better Than The Real Thing", "Beautiful Day" and "Elevation" out there. I wish whoever keeps commissioning them would get it through their heads that U2 is terrible dance music, no matter what you do it.

Ivo's remix 12" of Clan Of Xymox: "A Day"/"Stranger"
so bad it was good?

undanceable, but regularly packed the dancefloor anyway...

Paul, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The 12-inch of Springsteen's "Born in the USA." Echoing "USA USa Usa usa" forever. The worst all happened before the time of the modern remix, probably (pre-Cold Cut).

Mark, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

all those godawful 'mogwai fear satan' remixes. i mean, what's the point?

as an aside, is anybody fond of that 'reich remixed' disc? i think there's some wonderful remix moments on there but some people just hate it.

fields of salmon, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rick Rubin's "remix" of "We Are the Champions," which consisted of slapping the "Funky Drummer" break over the parts with the piano whether it synched up or not (answer: not), is kind of perversely brilliant. In a way. If you look at it a certain way. Kind of.

Douglas, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What are your favorite "Reich Remixed" moments, Mr. Salmon? I like the Takemura and the Tranquility Bass track, (nobody else like the latter). Hated the Coldcut & the Mantronix, from what I remember.

Mark, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

somebody's gotta mention the "Madchester" era here: I'll vouch for the remixes of Candyflip's "Strawberry Fields Forever" being even worse than the ridiculous original.

most all remix CDs are complete fucking wastes of time (including that Reich thing, mostly). not in a "that's horrible shit!" way, just in a "why fucking bother?" way. e.g. the Warp 10+3 disc.

M Matos, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the warp cd, oh god yeah, very disappointing. hard to pick the worst out of that bundle (maybe plones tricky disco one?)

gareth, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and if were talking madchester era, then andy weatheralls rmxes of flowered up are strangely muted and dull. a low on both artists part (and i like them both)

gareth, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe not worst, but I found RZA's remix of Bjork to be pretty disappointing.

Honda, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pointless and awful: the remix of Minutemen's "No One" on _Ballot Result_. Please tell me that this was meant as a joke.

Ernest Paik, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, the todd edwards remix of 'if i ever feel better' is ACE and doesn't belong anywhere near this thread.

minna, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

jellybean benitez rmx of 'i confess' by the english beat and my own we be clubbin rmx from 1999.

chaki, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kevin Shields' remix of Placebo's "Pure Morning" is pretty bad. Even V/Vm would have done a better job.

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Propellerheads' remix of Soul Coughing's "Super Bon Bon" succeeded only in killing one of the liveliest songs of the 1990s.

j.lu, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Paul Oakenfold remix of Idioteque.

lou, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Francois Kervorkian's New York mix of the Smiths' "This Charming Man" & anything else from the days when 12inch singles were still a novelty

bham, Friday, 17 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mark,

i actually quite like the coldcut remix in an "educational science film" kind of context. whenever i listen to it i feel like someone with a stuffy voice should be talking about cell division or stoichiometry or the paleolithic era. i think it's the most traditional take on reich that the disc offers (which can be good or bad depending on how you look at it). my only complaint about the track is that it has "coldcut fingerprints" all over it. other than that i agree that the tranquility bass mix is ace and which ever one has that frighteningly funky hip hop beat on it (can't remember, could actually be the tranquility bass).

fields of salmon, Friday, 17 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

anything van helden ever touched: esp. "professional widow". dull.

j.j., Friday, 17 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
the manitoba remix of Junior Boys birthday. Horrific.

Vanessa Mae, Friday, 6 May 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

Anything by Todd Terry, not because it really sounds terrible but rather because his remixes are completely lazy. He just slaps the same beat on everything, from Sneaker Pimps' "Low Five" to Everything But The Girl's "Missing".

Ian Riese-Moraine has a grenade, that pineapple's not just a toy! (Eastern Mantr, Friday, 6 May 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

oh? i quite like it.

xp
