The four elements of hip hop, according to the hip hop thread, are MCing, DJing, breaking and graffiti. But what are the four elements of indie? of house? of ambient? of polka?

Okay...seriously. The Four Elements of Indie: Velvet drones, Stooges fury, Siouxsie's vibe and transparencies of Beatles sheet music, turned backwards and upside down.
I'm sure that Kraftwerk and Big Star fit in there somewhere too, I'm just not sure where.
Four Elements of Ambient: Air Pudding, the 60 cycle hum of the municipal power grid, Brian Eno sniffin ether and "lets record the band thats playing techno music in the studio next door...through the wall."

If you were to collate all the "elements" of modern music, would there be enough of them to create a "periodic table"? The indie/post-modern crowd would be responsible for all the synthetic "man-made" elements at the bottom.

2)getting record companies to give you free promo copies so you can sell them.
